Luciano Spalletti insists he will not quit as Roma coach following the club's shock UEFA Champions League defeat by CFR Cluj. Last season's Serie A runners-up have endured a lacklustre start to the new season and lost at Palermo in domestic competition at the weekend. Champions League debutants CFR Cluj were expected to provide the perfect opposition for Roma to kick-start their campaign. But the Romanian club came from behind to win 2-1 to leave Spalletti fighting for his future at the Stadio Olimpico.

"I'm not leaving Roma, we'll pedal harder," Spalletti told reporters. He added on Sky Italia: "What happened? We did a few things better, others less so, and we lost the match. In the second half we haven't been able to play with order, there was a nervousness and we haven't been able to show our characteristics and capabilities. I expected more in the second half because our players have the characteristics to do good things. Players are aware it's necessary to change attitude in view of a recovery."


No Roma Crisis – Mazzone

Former Roma coach Carlo Mazzone doesn’t believe there is a crisis at Trigoria after the club’s shock 2-1 loss to Cluj in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The Giallorossi crumbled after taking the lead through Christian Panucci, with Culio grabbing a brace for the visitors. It was the second defeat in a row for Luciano Spalletti’s men after their 3-1 shambles to Palermo last weekend in Serie A.

It’s not looking good for the Olimpico-based side but Mazzone doesn’t believe there should be any cause for concern. The former coach believes the problem has been down to various injuries more than anything else.

Shield, I have a bad case of the flu and am taking so much cold medicine I'm practically drooling. I do agree with Mazzone to a certain extent but we had enough talent on the pitch to take full points. The boys should have put the game away in the opening 20 minutes. After Panucci gave Roma the lead we should have been able to kill the game against a team like Cluj. There was enough talent and power in the midfield to impose on Cluj. I would understand giving up a fluke goal but to be outclassed from the 20th minute on is inexcusable.

I am not a fan of Rosella's but someone had to come out and tell the players to get their heads out of their asses. Everyone is making excuses and someone had to tell them there are no excuses for their play over the last three weeks.

Shield, I think in part you over-estimate the difference between sides at this level. For sure we've got players who can step in and replace those guys, but the balance of the side is based around the different things they bring - the running they do, the runs they make, the technical qualities they bring. For simple instance, a fullback can afford to get himself on the 'wrong' side of the ball when Totti's in possession because he knows he's not going to give it away in certain ways. On the other hand, we tend to defend quite deep - this is the basis of our so-called 'cluster-fuck' attacking style. For this, though, you need guys who can get up and down the pitch quickly and often (cue Taddei, Perrotta, and also Mancini, though in a slightly different way). Take those guys out, and the basic balance of the side shifts. I suppose a parallel illustration might be what happens to ManUre when Ronaldo is out or Arsewipe without Fabregas or Inter at times last season without Ibra. It's not as though those clubs don't also have quite good alternatives; it's just that the difference between good and great (or perfect in terms of 'fit') is enough to be decisive. Of course, Cluj are an ordinary side and they'll cop a hiding or two in the next five CL games, I should think, but they'll cop a hiding because when they get behind they'll give up. So long as you keep them with a sniff they'll work hard enough to make life difficult. I'm not presenting this as an 'excuse'; I do, though, think the gulf in class is a bit more subtle than is sometimes recognised.

You also just have to let Edge have his rants. Even if we win the next 15 games, if we then lose a couple he'll be back with his "I'm fekking sick of this 4-2-3-1 and I'm fecking sick of Spalletti" spiel. I was actually quite surprised it didn't come out after the Palermo game. Personally, I'm much more sympathetic to the way Spags conducts himself on the sideline when things are going wrong than probably anyone. It seems to me that his whole approach is based around making guys take responsibility on the pitch. It's the approach to which I would always respond best myself. I roll my eyes when you see a coach ranting and raving at his players. Fans love it because it shows passion and gives the impression of getting something done, but it never worked in the slightest for me as a player. Having your coach roaring at you from the bench never got me to find that extra gear or that extra bit of energy - that came from within and from your team-mates.

Anyway, the mechanisms of this team are broken at the moment. It may be psychological; no doubt it's partly tactical and technical, exacerbated by the injuries and the late signing of the players. It's much easier to settle into a settled team and this side is hardly settled at the moment. Let's hope Totti can start on the weekend and get an hour or so under his belt so the others can play around him. And let's hope the little eagle enjoys the chance to have a run in the Pizza's place. If Perrotta's still out, I wonder if Spags might start thinking of a more orthodox 4-4-2 into which it'd presumably be easier to fit the new players at this stage.
