I was OBVIOUSLY not referring to Napoli... i was referring to games over the past two years where our quick one touch football kept running into dead ends trying to score goals agianst them, and its against those sort of teams that a player like cicinho becomes a much more valuable member of the squad than a cassetti is. Everyone knows Cicinho's has defensive weaknesses, and yet every time he makes a mistake, he's put under the microscope and you guys are moaning about the same thing again and again and again. Its like saying Perotta is a poor finisher.. we all know it, so after a handful of impressive performances, when he succumbs to his weakness, its suddenly an issue and is a justifciation for 'overspending' on him. Cassetti is an alternative to Panucci... an inform and fit Panucci should be started ahead of Cassetti time and time again.. Cicinho however is a different sort of player.. we have no alternative to him on this squad, which is precisely why i'm more than happy to accept his weaknesses along with his strengths... which is something that people cry about time and time again.

dibdib, I've lost track of your point here, then. I think all of us agree that Cicinho brings different things to the table going forwards and that those things were important at times towards the end of last season. As an all-round player, though, Cassetti is much more complete. He's also better than Panucci now, in Spags's eyes, no doubt because Panucci doesn't have quite the pace or the fitness to get up and down the flank for 90 minutes as he has done in the past. When Cicinho's attacking contributions earn us more points than his defensive failings cost us, then he'll properly cement his place in the starting 11. So long as he continues making important defensive mistakes, we'll continue to get frustrated with him. Despite his technical failings, Simone consistently makes the team look better; when the same can be said of Cicinho, I shall be clamouring for him to start every game.

Didn't you guys saw that Mexes own goal coming??? I actually did, look at it, he stuck the ball aganist his own post in the Super Coppa aganist Inter, then forced a world class save out of Doni in the Napoli game, he finally managed to get the goal he derved in the international match, he finally managed to do it.

when he wants it, he will get it, Forza Mexes.

Delighted for the mighty Irish. When Georgia scored, I have to admit I hit the panic button. We have the worst habit of tossing away leads and drawing every single game we play. Relieved we're taking three points to Montenagro. Fair play to them btw for holding the Bulgarians to a draw. Hopefully we'll fair better against them.

Nothing much happening on the Roma front. It's like the season hasn't really got started yet...

Well, I think some sources are crediting it as an own-goal, though I take your point. Actually, I think it may have come off another French defender's head in the first place, which may be also why they're calling it an own-goal. Certainly it wasn't Philou's finest defensive moment.

Thats where our differences in opinion lay then i guess Maro... i think Cicinho's contributions last season, particularly the second half of the season were very important, and thus made the team look better with him on the pitch. I was pointing out his strengths and weaknesses just because i wanted to highlight that his defensive attributes are well known, and thus doesnt requie a hissy fit everytime he makes a mistake, but i guess for me that is because i see Cicinho contirbuting a lot more than he occasionally costs us. If you and Tuna think that Cassetti has provided more to Roma cause since 2008, well then, fair enough.

Edgy... i was gonnna say the exact same thing as you were about Mexes... the wise ones amongst us should've foreseen the owngoal.

dibdib, anyone who's prepared to open both eyes could see that Cassetti offered us more than Cicinho did last season. You might blame that on Spags for not giving Cicinho a chance for the first three or four months of the season, but Cassetti was one of our most consistent performers before he got injured. I will have a hissy-fit every time a defender doesn't have the application or concentration to do his job properly.

This Season Will Be More Exciting - Perrotta

Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta talked about the Giallorossi's Scudetto rivals and the excitement of the Champions League. In the last two seasons the Serie A title race has been a battle between Inter and Roma. However, with the ashes from the Calciopoli scandals fading away, Juventus and Milan are back with a vengeance and will certainly aim to play a role in the title race, along with an ambitious Fiorentina side who qualified for the Champions League last season. Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta, a frequent goalscorer against Inter, talked about the Scudetto race and the prospect of reaching the Champions League final, which will be played in Rome this season.

"I think Inter and Roma are equal, there is nothing in which one is superior to the other," he said. "We are more or less on the same level, but games are won with episodes. It's the truth, because when two teams are so evenly matched, it takes very little for a match to be decided."

On Roma's other Scudetto rivals, the Italian international said: "Fiorentina had a good transfer campaign, they were already strong last year, they strengthened their team in the right places. The same goes for Milan. Juve are still Juve, with their strong mentality, and they have bought Amauri, a great striker. It will certainly be a more exciting season than the last one."

On the Champions League: "The Champions League takes away a lot of energy, but it's also great to play it, it gives morale, and it gives satisfaction when you win. Let's hope we can do well and go all the way."

Roma started the new Serie A season with a 1-1 home draw against Napoli, but all the other Scudetto favorites failed to win as well on the first matchday. Their next game is a tricky away tie against Palermo.
