Inter's case for the defence

Add one of the best defenders in Europe - Cristian Chivu - and a striker who scored 36 goals in the last two campaigns - David Suazo - to a squad which dominated Serie A last season and it does not take much to realise who are favourites to win the Scudetto when the new Italian season starts this weekend. Fortunately football does not always follow logic, as FC Internazionale Milano learned to their cost when AS Roma defeated them in the Italian Super Cup on Sunday.

Record breakers
Last season Roberto Mancini's side won the title with an Italian-record total of 97 points, while also setting new highs for consecutive wins (17), most wins (30), most away wins (15), and consecutive away wins (11). Second-placed Roma finished 22 points behind. The Giallorossi may have been the only side to beat Inter in the league, as well as getting the better of them in the Coppa Italia final, but they were never serious contenders for the Scudetto.

'No fear'
Roma's success in head-to-heads against their rivals proved their starting XI was more or less at the same level as Inter's, but the Nerazzurri's larger squad made the difference in the long run. Roma took note and look to have reduced the gap this summer with signings Cicinho, Juan, Mauro Esposito, Ahmed Barusso and Ludovic Giuly, coupled with the return to full fitness of players such as Mirko Vučinić and Alberto Aquilani, who struggled with injuries last season. "Roma believe in the Scudetto" declared Corriere dello Sport after the Giallorossi's Super Cup triumph. "The wind has changed this season," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said, adding that his players are "now able to face the best team in Italy away with no kind of fear".

Inter should have a more difficult task than last season. European champions AC Milan do not have an eight-point deduction this time and as well as being bolstered by the arrival of Emerson, they will also have Massimo Oddo and Ronaldo available from the start, both having joined the Rossoneri midway through last term. Moreover, Juventus are back in the top flight following the purgatory of Serie B and new coach Claudio Ranieri has built a team capable of causing even the mighty Inter a few problems. He has signed a host of experienced internationals – Jorge Andrade, Tiago, Zdeněk Grygera, Sergio Bernardo Almirón, Hasan Salihamidžić and Vincenzo Iaquinta – while also managing to keep hold of linchpins Gianluigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi, Alessandro The Waterboy and David Trezeguet. It is difficult to say, however, if the Bianconeri will be strong enough to challenge for the title.

Juve determined
"Other teams are already well-oiled, while we still have to get to know each other," Ranieri said. "Juventus are used to fighting for the title. I don't know if it will be this way this season, but my players have a lot of determination and a will to win, so I don't want to limit their enthusiasm." The likes of US Città di Palermo, ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio and UC Sampdoria have also greatly reinforced their squads and are ready to spring a surprise, while the return of sleeping giants Genoa CFC and Napoli Soccer from Serie B should help rejuvenate the league as a whole after a difficult year. Inter may be favourites once again, but the Nerazzurri will surely face higher hurdles in their dash for the finishing line this time round.

Moratti: "Intelligent attitude needed"

APPIANO GENTILE - After watching the Nerazzurri at work during Friday morning's training session, Inter president Massimo Moratti gave this interview to Sky Italia:

Dr Moratti, is the Champions League Inter's main goal this season?
"In certain moments I believe I represent both the fans and the team. And the Nerazzurri fans are demanding in asking for the Champions League, a competition you can exit because of just one match - and we know this full well. So this forces us to do well, very well. And it is for this reason that I hope we will at least reach the final."

Compared to last year, what has changed?
"I shouldn't say this, but for me it was even harder last year because we were forced to win when they said it was easy because Juventus weren't there, and that Milan had a penalisation of eight points. We have to win again this year because we have to defend the championship we won, and we have a strong team, but the others are too. So from a certain psychological point of view it's easier, but we have to do what we did last year. I thought the coach and the players did well last year in a situation in which we could have fallen asleep. We have to continue with this attitude this year."

After the Super Cup, what kind of reaction are you expecting in the opening match of the season?
"Desire, humility and concentration. An intelligent attitude. You have to earn again what you have done, and you have to do it with lots of desire."

Have you heard from Marco Materazzi since his injury?
"Yes, I have heard from him. He replied with the usual courage and confidence. He has matured a lot, both as a great player and as a man. I have to say that in my dealings with Materazzi he always thinks of others. He's always asking me to do favours for others and never for himself. This means he's someone who always thinks of others, including his team-mates, and not much of himself. He's a very nice person and I'm sorry this injury has happened to him because he was very motivated for the championship and most of all for the national team. These are things that teach you a lot in life, that indirectly help you to rest a bit. I hope he's back soon. He will do well later on."

Dr Moratti, your opinion of Zlatan Ibrahimovic?
"He's a leader in terms of his character, and for the fans, and because he did well last year. But what I like about this team is that they all respect each other and they are all talented. They all think and hope they can be useful for the club."

There's talk of him extending his contract until 2012. Is this true?
"Yes, I hope so. I believe we have reached an agreement until that date."

Is it true that there will be a transfer coup in January for the centenary?
"No, no. I don't want to deceive anyone or disappoint my players. I think this team is equipped to do well and has such a big group of champions that looking for anyone else would mean buying an inferior player."

There's talk of Parma's interest in Adriano...
"I have already heard this rumour. But Adriano is part of Inter and here he's improving day after day. We will continue with him and with this policy. We're trying to understand him and help him - if we need to, to get him back to what he was before and to make him feel calmer. I think this will happen soon. We know his great potential and we're waiting for him to fulfil it."

What can you tell us about Alvaro Recoba?
"It's not an easy analysis to make. I can't say the coaches he has had have been 100% wrong because he's not an easy play to insert. For me Recoba is a decisive player, he can score goals and make assists. I consider him to be decisive because this is how you win matches in football. He's decisive in a surprising manner, he's a player who does new things in a single match and is surprising for the fans and for us who are part of the club, so I find it hard to evaluate the exclusion of Recoba from the team. This, however, is my personal view, and I still consider him to be a very strong player. Actually, I'm surprised there aren't any big clubs who want him. They all think he has a high salary but in fact his salary isn't that high. However, they know his transfer value."

Adriano has reportedly turned down a loan move to Parma, but Inter teammate Alvaro Recoba could take his place.

The Brazilian had been on the verge of completing the temporary transfer to the club where he had really made his name from 2002 to January 2004, scoring 23 goals in 37 Serie A games.


It is claimed the two sides had already reached an agreement over the terms, but Adriano rejected the proposal, as he hopes to stay at Inter and challenge for a place.


The negotiations continued and it is now suggested that the deal remains with one small difference – the name on the contract is Recoba.


The Uruguayan is very low in the pecking order at San Siro and would be able to prove himself with regular first team football at the Stadio Tardini.


Parma would pay £670,000 of Recoba’s £1.5m per season wages and the clubs are now waiting for his verdict.


Failing that, the Gialloblu have also expressed their interest in Victor Obinna, who is at Chievo but partly owned by Inter.

One has to go i agree but not both of them because if Adriano goes , We have Crespo, cruz and recoba who gets injured too much and we will suffer. Or maybe they will leave both so Balotelli will be given more chance to show his worth
