I think I'm with Populusque on this one. 20 mil or 18 mil or whatever it would end up being, is a lot of money, but I think Mutu fits the bill absolutely perfectly. Personally, I think he's a better player than Mancini and certainly he's more versatile for us across the forward line. It is a pity he's not a year or two younger, but he should still have 3 or 4 years at the top of his game ahead of him. It's the last time he could go for biggish money, which I suspect is why Fiorentina may, in the end, be prepared to let him go. I just think he's the perfect fit for this squad, the way Spags wants them to play. Certainly he's not my favourite player, but it's hard not to see him as an extremely shrewd purchase. I think if we could add one other forward to the mix, too, presumably on loan, then that would make the squad conspicuously stronger this season than last. And while Fiore and Rube might also be stronger, they will be properly fighting on two fronts for a change. He's not my favourite player, but surely technically he'd add a dimension and he should also bring at least as many goals as Mancini managed in that role. He's probably not quite as quick and he's not an up and down player, but I think he'd do the business for us and win us some tight games over the course of a season.

Still, no doubt tomorrow morning I'll wake to see that he's signed an extension with Fiore because he had an allergic reaction to Prade's ring finger.

Well well, should we be surprised by this news from Florence? Not really. News of our bid for Mutu broke faster than Maro at a sheep shearing competition, and to think it could be all wrapped up within a day or two was quite naive of us. Fiorentina are building a team to challenge not only in Serie A but also in the CL and so I was surprised to hear that they would entertain our offer at all, but now with this latest rejection its looking like the only way we can land Mutu is if he publicly comes out and says he wants Roma, and even then it would be very difficult if the brothers Della Valle come and say he's not going. Looks like its back to the drawing board, or playschool, for Prade.
