Shield, Malouda did actually play through the middle for Chelski a bit towards the end of the season. I think he may even have done so in the CL final - I remember vividly the British commentators bleating because Grant had Malouda playing through the middle and Anelka stuck out wide right. Why not go to a straight 4-4-2, they bellowed, with Anelka in his natural position through the middle.

I don't really feel like commenting on these latest rumours...suffice it to say with the exception of Baptista I hope the rest remain just speculation. But since we have made no official approaches to even him then it's all just as Shield has said...

Ita & Tony, you tell 'em! If Giuly felt so hard done by then he's better off out of it as far as we are concerned.

Just as a point of interest I've been shocked to see tv documentary programs where they talk of footballers from even the top clubs of the day back in the 1930's, 40's, and even early 50's having to go home after a game on the bus or the tram (street car) crowded in amongst all the supporters and thinking nothing of it. None of the fancy trappings of the modern game for them, many were paid little more than factory or shop workers and they were grateful to be footballers.

These guys earned their living and though I agree those conditions had to be improved, could we imagine the likes of David Beckham or in this case Ludo Giuly back then? I doubt it!

Carlo, you should have a read of 'My Father and Other Working Class Football Heroes' by Gary Imlach.

The system of football contracts in the '50's was just unbelievable. The players got paid a pittance and basically had no power over their future. How times change...

I think the pendulum has swung too far in favor of the players most currently...The latest ruling on player contracts being terminated after 3 years indicates that player power is at its peak

Tony & Populusque, for sure in these politically correct days player power has way crossed over the point where wrongs had to be set right. A lot has happened since the incredible Paolo Rossi became the original $6 million man in 1980...
