I'd love to know what Spags is planning to do with Cerci - probably just ship his ass out to the highest bidder in January. I may regret it badly come the end of the season, but I really wouldn't mind if Spags decided that he wanted to go into the season with Esposito and Cerci as two of his 8 front players (with Totti, Perrotta, Vooch, Taddei, and Baptista?? and ?? as the other 6). No doubt he'd then find ways of picking Max and Cassetti on the wings instead of them, but what can you do?

Alessio Cerci, dopo la strepitosa annata di B, vuole essere protagonista anche nella massima serie. E' lo stesso calciatore a sostenerlo: "Io penso di rimanere a Roma, visto che devo ancora curarmi (Cerci ha subito un infortunio appena prima dei playoff promozione con il Pisa, che l'ha costretto a saltare l'ultima parte di campionato, ndr). Credo di potere fare molto bene anche qui, ho voglia di giocarmi le mie possibilità in giallorosso. Sarà poi l'allenatore a decidere, io mi darò da fare per non perdere questa importante occasione. Sono molto fiducioso riguardo le mie potenzialità".

It's Spalletti's decision then. Anyone taking bets. As we can see, Cerci really wants to show his value to Roma. Somebody needs to ask Spalletti which Roma youth players he rates. I know Dalla Penna is one of those kids in whom Bruno Conti believes is going to be a major force in the future. Who else is on Spalletti's list I want to know, because to me the youth system appears to be nothing more than a mechanism to buy established players. Non Italians of course. I see that Andrea Russotto is all set to sign with Napoli. Funny, because Roma has been following this kid for a few years now. He's only 20, and he has loads of potential. But since we have no stomach for developing our own youngsters, why would we go out and buy one.

Here is another one of our youth players in whom Bruno placed great faith. The former Primavera Captain. From everything I hear, this kid's a solid player. Last year, Spalletti said he did not want to loan him out, but he went to Taranto anyway. Now he is off to Modena. Povero Massi......

Well, I suppose we can hope that we're looking at another Aquilani, say - a couple of years on loan to return a much more complete package and ready to compete for a spot at high table. You know my opinion, Avvocato - I would like us to have a squad of 18 or 19 senior pros, with the rest of the squad filled out with 4 or 5 youngsters. I'd have, at least, our fourth-choice CB a young player, one of our four 'holding midfielders' the same, a third striker the same and one of our trequartista - so, indeed, we could have Freddi, perhaps, Marsili, Cerci, and Okaka. And in this particular case I'd also have Rosi doing Cassetti's role. Personally, I wouldn't mind if it didn't work. How poorly could the boys do, anyway? I suppose we're better equipped with Loria, Cassetti, Brighi, Esposito, and Crespo, say, filling those roles, but the romantic in me would prefer it the other way.

The last I looked Tommaso, Crespo is not on this team. Nevertheless, my point is that we seem to have no interest in bringing up these youth players to the big team. Another Aquilani? Hell, Aquilani is not even Aquilani because he does not play as much as he should. I agree that you have to integrate the youth players into the squad slowly. But we do not seem to be doing that and some of these players are not kids anymore. As I said, we do not appear interested in developing these players. It's easier to go out and by a senior pro as you say.

I said several years ago that by this time that Aquilani, Curci, Cerci, Ferronetti and Chiellini would be an integral part of this team. Man was I wrong. We lost Chiellini, gave up on Ferronetti, have no faith in either Cerci or Curci, and Aquilani is not even a starter. Personally, I don't think Spalletti is interested in our youth system. He has bought into the "buy yourself a ready made player" concept. Only with Roma's finances, who is he buying and what have we won.

Tony, you've read this from me before so please bear with me...

All you guys, this is one of the reasons Blatter is trying to force the EEC into accepting the 6 and 5 rule. It's going to finally force clubs to keep and use the better players coming through their youth systems. Something has to be done to relieve the increasing pressure of needing to buy ready made stars (usually imported) rather than developing promising youngsters.

It's also going to help prevent the CL from becoming the exclusive property of the elitist rich clubs who will have a monopoly on all the best players because only they will be able to buy and pay them which would reduce domestic leagues to the status of only existing as a means of CL qualification. Whether we like it or not, Roma haven't the financial muscle to compete under those circumstances which means for us unless things change in our upper office we can look to regarding reaching the Uefa Cup as a success. If football is to survive as a competition based on fair play then it has to be not just on the pitch!

I would love this rule, but I don't think it would happen. I think a 4-7 rule would be more reasonable, even though I would prefer the 6-5.

I think Roma definately need to lock up someone who can hit the back of the net. Bring Totti in behind him and sent Perrotta to the wing in Giuly's sport. Taddei is a good backup.
