Carlo, I presume you're overlooking the fact that we've already brought in Loria to replace Ferrari and bolster the defensive stocks. Whether we have the right players in place is a different question, but in terms of what the squad 'needs', we have three keepers in place (Doni, JS, Arthur), two right backs (Cicinho, Cassetti), four centre backs (Mexes, Juan, Panucci, Loria), two left backs (Riise, Tonetto - and for all that tonykart may mutter about Riise's defensive capabilities, I think it's pretty clear that it's as a full-back that he's been signed and it's probably also fair to say that he comes to the club with more defensive experience and expertise than Max did). These guys may not be the right players, but they're the players the club is clearly counting on for the coming season. The places we're a bit short are in options up top and on the left; we're also just a tiny bit short of a true vice-DDR. Brighi is, ostensibly, that player, but I suspect Spags would also like a more physical alternative too. He also has a tendency to go for players with genuine versatility - so any of those fullbacks might be asked to play further up the pitch when required; Aquilani can play in front of DDR and the Pizza as well as instead of the latter; Giuly and Perrotta can offer us different kinds of things down the middle and in wider positions. It seems to me pretty clear, then, that the ideal for Spags would be the addition of Mutu and Baptista; between them, they would cover all of these areas of weakness, giving us further options across the trequartista line and further cover for Totti, too. Whether Esposito and Giuly are up to the task is, again, a different question, but in terms of this squad's 'needs', I imagine that if both stay, they will fill important slots within the 23-man first-team squad. If either leaves, then an additional replacement will be needed.

Tony, I've seen vdV play as part of a front two often enough - but not as a lone striker. And when he's part of a front two, he's always been the more withdrawn player, playing, as it were, just in behind a true striker leading the line. More to the point, were he to play in our formation as the front man, he, like Totti, would need a player like Perrotta behind him - someone whose natural game is to get beyond him, not a ball-player who likes to pull the strings with the ball at his feet. You also need players who are prepared to attack the space in behind defences; in our squad, Vooch and Perrotta are the only two who do that really, though it's also part of Esposito's game and Mancini did it at times.

I'm glad I'm at home this afternoon and therefore able to read the Mediaset text updates...

Mutu's words of reassurance to la Viola's fans earlier today could just be words, talking of being pleased with Fiorentinas new signings. What I found a lot more interesting was the part referring to his needing to see them on the field and that with Gilardino now being there, unless he (Mutu) is told what he wants to hear as regards his own playing situation then he will leave.
