Sports, from the fans perspective, is the victim of commerical success. I still believe you can maintain some purity in football and have commericial success at the same time. At least at the club level. I think grasso identified the problem specifically regarding Roma. We do not have the money to bring in the next Totti. We have to develop one from within. So what is happening with some of our youth players is very disturbing. I still am not over the Petrucci debacle. All the kid wanted was some acknowledgement that he was being developed to play for Roma and a little more money. He did not want to leave Rome. Do you guys know how difficult it is to leave your country at 16 or 17? I can tell you from experience that it is not something I recommend. ManU thought enough of that kid to give him the maximum salary and give his father a job in England also to help the boy. What did Roma do? They gave him a ultimatum. This is how we treat our own people. I am telling you guys the Petrucci case is precedent setting. Roma is giving these kids no reason to believe that they will ever make it to the big club and more importantly, the club is treating them like garbage and it starts at the top with Rosella. Bruno Conti is being undermined in my opinion. Nobody knows the lengths in which he goes to court Roman youth. The man is seen everywhere. He builds up trust with the kids and their families. This is why our youth system is the envy of europe. This is why teams like ManU are poaching our kids. They tried to poach Cerci when he was 15 years old.

I also blame Spalletti because he is supposed to be the judge of talent. I can fully understand wanting to bring in players to help Roma win now, that's what all the other teams do right? But what has Roma won? The point is that we are not in the postion to splash out money for a Messi, Ronaldo or Ronaldinho. The next Totti is not coming from outside of Italy. He has to come from our youth system. But it seems to me that we are placing less importance on that system and more importance on bringing in foreign players who won't help us win anyway.

Completely agree Italiamia. Another problem with Roma is we are not trying to bring in young Italian talent. Players like Russotto and Forestieri can be had for cheap. They have terrific talent and can be loaned out to gain experience. Also, if we are going to play high tempo one touch football like Spalletti wants, why don't we make it organizational? Kids in every level learn to play the same way. It will be much easier to incorporate them into the big squad. Although some of the youth players may lack certain characteristics they will be well groomed to play within the team system. We may lose some excellent talent who can't fit the system but other players will grow with their defined roles. It is sort of the "Moneyball" principles.

Il neo-tecnico del Bayern Monaco, Jurgen Klinsmann, si è dichiarato pessimista sulla possibilità che Mario Gomez, centravanti dello Stoccarda, possa raggiungere la Baviera: ""Non sono interessati a negoziare, tra due o tre anni vedremo". Dopo un Europeo catastrofico, Mario Gomez è attualmente in vacanza mentre il suo agente, Maurizio Gaudino, mantiene vivi i contatti con l'Italia, nonostante una chiamata da Roma non sia mai arrivata.

Klinsmann reckons Stuttgart won't sell Gomez. I would love to get either of these two, as unlikely as it seems.

I thought Crespo was now a free-agent, no? He was on loan with Inter from Chel$ki the last two seasons so couldn't of actually had a contract with Inter, right? Like Edge, I think Crespo wouldn't be a bad signing (considering we are the Kings of free signings), as long as he's not our main reinforcement for up front.

You just need one big striker and one CB.

We won't bring in a CB, tk. Our back eight is surely sorted - Cassetti/Cicinho/Panucci - Mexes/Juan/Loria/Panucci - Tonetto/Riise. If Esposito goes, as seems most likely, then we also need another wide player and the question, then, is what kind of "big striker" are we after: someone to complement Totti? Someone to substitute for him as needed? Someone about whom the whole team-shape gets rejigged? Or someone who can slot in at any number of places along our attacking line?

But your defense is the worst part of your team. Surely Roma's #1 problem is not scoring goals. I agree that a big striker would help Roma a ton. But, Roma are sloppy as hell at the back and it costs you many important games.

That has rather more to do with the way the team plays, though, than with the particular personnel, I think. Our style of attack is based around getting numbers forward, which always leaves us a bit exposed at the back. Still, it could be worse. We could still have Zebina in the squad.

I agree Maro. The style of play really sacrifices defensive stability. But, if you had a defensive leader at the back like Marquez or Lugano, I think you would be much better off.
