German Press rallies round Toni

The German media has come to the defence of Luca Toni after the Bayern Munich striker failed to find the net at Euro 2008.

Toni received some harsh criticism in Italy having spurned a glut of chances throughout the European Championship.

However, Germany's newspapers, and Bild in particular, insist that the Bundesliga top scorer wasn’t to blame for Italy’s lack of goals in Austria and Switzerland.

Well according to today's press, when Lippi takes over as CT, Iaquinta will be reinstated to the Nazionale.

My argument in his favour is that even if he has only a 1 in 4 strike success rate as compared to say, Trezeguet for example with a 2 in 4, his other qualities compensate. He can hold the ball till he gets support, he makes assists, he is fast, and he won't give up.

His job isn't to lead the attack but to help it, he's not a centroavanti but a secondo punto. If he came to Roma which I'd like but doubt will happen, he would probably take Taddei's place on the right of midfield with Vuci on the left, both supporting Totti. Better yet, both supporting a real goal machine of a striker up front with Totti dropping back into Perrotta's place...but I guess this is best left for the Roma threads.

Amauri would've been perfect for Don's team but I doubt he will ever get an Italy call up for someone else's team.
