Have any of you guys heard the latest Paul Simon album? No doubt he's not really to the taste of most of you , but there's a lovely song with what I find a really moving and suggestive line: "You cannot walk with the holy, if you're just a half-way decent man." It makes me think of the 'a man who has not sinned is not truly a man' discussion we had a while back; it also makes me think of what I, perhaps mistakenly, imagine the Avvocato thinks of me and others of my ilk. I like to think of myself as a "half-way decent man," but when it comes to standing before the throne of the Lord, what kind of a claim is that, really? What kind of value does half-way decent humanism have in a world of 'last things'? in the face of ferocious justice and unfathomable mercy? in the face of the transcendences implicit in the language of the "holy" or the "sacred"?

I don't have much time maro. I will tell you what I tell of those whom I care about in this life regarding their atheism. I am old enough to know that it is difficult to change any adult. So I never try to convert them. I don't call them sinners or heathens or whatever...I think to much of them to do such things. I pray for them, as I do for you maro. Many of them, like you maro, are good and decent people and the relationship I have with them is something very important in my life. Therefore, whether they believe or not, is not something that changes my overall view of them personally. My feeling is that if you are a good person, then I cannot see how my Lord, Jesus, can turn his back on you. After all, you get into heaven by good deeds towards others, particulary those less fortunate in this world. Just because you are a believer matters little if you do not carry out the mandates of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, if everyone heeds the words...."what you do to the least of them, you do to me..", I think all of us will meet up in a better place someday.
