Yes, I don't know how to judge this season, really. Finishing so far clear of Milan, for instance, or of Fiorentina, is pretty impressive given the mumblings of discontent over their spending more money on reinforcements over the summer. On the other hand, I still can't see how Inter, with a proper manager, wouldn't be another 10 or 15 points on and miles out of sight. It's been a funny year in Spain too, for instance, and actually a little bit in England. With our points tally in any of the other leagues we'd be close to the top of the pile. Still, how far have we really gone forward? We still seem to me relatively one-dimensional (or perhaps that's unfair, but you know what I mean) and we still seem short a whole gear which we'll need to win something. It's true that winning is the only thing which really brings a winning mentality, but at the same time I've felt we've been waiting to get beaten or undone at times. I thought the last 110 minutes of the ManUre tie were very poor, really quite worryingly poor, in a way that I think the penalty miss has allowed some to ignore. And the same sort of thing applied against Livorno; it's not so much that we couldn't seal the deal - that happens. It was more that I never really got the sense we had anyone prepared to take even that game by the balls and bury Livorno once and for all. The urgency returned after the equaliser, but that just demonstrated all the more compellingly that it had gone away and at that point of the season that's just not acceptable. I suppose, then, my sense is that we must have moved on from last year. We matched or bettered the result at Lyon against Real; we've got more points in what looks like it's been a more competitive league; we're still well ahead of some pretty tidy sides in the Serie A pile. Still, I can't shake the feeling that we're a whole gear short and if any team has an outstanding year next season, it won't be us and we won't be able to get all that close to challenging them. We may be able to be champions in a league without any really champion side, but that's the only way it'll happen.

Sensi Says Goodbye On Eve Of Takeover
With Roma just days away from a takeover, administrative delegate Rosella Sensi has thanked, on behalf of her father Franco, all those who have shown their affection towards the club.

Reports have been strengthening in the Italian press for a couple of months now that the Giallorossi are set to be taken over due to the fact that the club’s parent company, Italpetroli, possess debts in the region of €370m.

Last week Roma confirmed that they were in talks with American billionaire George Soros in order to sell the club, and it appears that this moment could arrive in days if not hours.

Rosella Sensi has now offered a few words on behalf of her father, Franco, the outgoing President of Roma.

ROMA - Ore 8: mentre mamme e papà accompagnano i ragazzini a scuola le autoradio vanno e Rete Sport bombarda col suo mix rintronante: Rita Pavone, rock, pubblicità, stornelli, e a sera - 12 ore dopo - "La pioggia che va" dei Rokes. E in mezzo Roma, solo la Roma, George Soros, Sensi padre e figlia, e l'americano cui la Capitale vuol consegnarsi. I conduttori si alternano, la gente chiama, chiama: quanto chiacchiera Roma. Uno si dà un tono, parla di "dismissioni di asset", ma poi arriva quello che va al sodo: "Oh, qui Sensi con la Roma s'è sputtanato un patrimonio".

E allora andiamoci anche noi al sodo. Roma ha scaricato Sensi, e di brutto. Dispiace, certo: 15 anni, uno scudetto, le storiche battaglie del Sor Franco, come fai a buttarle via? Però è così, non lo vogliono più: viva i soldi del filantropo stramiliardario - "Aho, 11 miliardi di dollari c'ha!" - di origini ungheresi, che ha sbancato Wall Street e incrociato i pugni con la Banca d'Inghilterra. Ma quanti Ronaldinho può comprare allora questo? E può spaventarsi per 250 milioni d'euro? "Se non gliela dà la Roma, la signora Rosella ci deve spiegare": il vento è cambiato.

Ci vuole un viaggio allora nel cuore di Roma: non in quella dei circoli, come l'Aniene, dove Giovanni Malagò - famiglia storicamente vicina prima ai Viola, ora a Sensi e a Totti - si tiene a metà fra il romano e l'americano. Testaccio, San Lorenzo, Garbatella e Torrevecchia, la Roma popolare conta, è il ventre della Capitale che butta fuori umori. E decide. Basta col tirare a campare, vogliono far guerra a Inter, Juve e Milan che si comprano Ronaldinho e Ibrahimovic; vogliono scalare l'Europa di Barcellona, Manchester & C.

Mercato di Testaccio: Alessandro il macellaio affetta carne di cavallo: "Soros non lo conosco, però ora due soldi ce li avremo pure noi, ce li compriamo, finalmente, i fenomeni". Idem la giornalaia: "Siamo nel mondo della globalizzazione, no? Sensi lo facciamo presidente onorario, così...". Globalizzazione? A Testaccio? Sì, qui sta crollando la città. Bottiglieria da Mario, roba di classe, vuoi vedere che qui Soros non ha sfondato? Macché: "Favorevole all'americano, se serve a fare una Roma più forte. E se lo fa solo per business poco male, così va il mondo". A favore di Sensi rimediamo un pizzicagnolo, Enzo: "Sono 40 anni che vado allo stadio, questo arriva, sta 4-5 anni poi facciamo la fine della Lazio". E Massimo, bancarella di vestiti usati: "Così si perde l'anima, come l'Inter. Soros è un grande imprenditore ma lo fa per speculazione. Preferisco vincere una volta ogni 20 anni".

E basta, nessuno più. Al Roma club Testaccio, quello che ha festeggiato l'ultimo scudetto per almeno un paio d'anni, giocano a carte. Il presidente Rosi: "Ben venga Soros, stiamo sempre a soffrì per 'sti quattro soldi. Così facciamo come Moratti e Berlusconi, che gli venisse un... Va bene, va bene ma facessero Totti presidente".

Un paio di chilometri di ingorgo, Roma club la Garbatella. All'ingresso sulla cappottina c'è scritto: "Il bar dei Cesaroni". Già, è qui che si gira la popolare fiction. Vincenzo Mantini è amico di Sensi, ci sono foto di loro abbracciati. "Franco è un grande amico, non sa quanto mi dispiace che stia male. Però se diamo la società in mano a gente forte e brava... Lo so, è business, ma che dobbiamo fare?".

San Lorenzo, via dei Volsci, ultrasinistra degli anni 70. All'angolo, in via degli Equi, il negozio dei Boys 1972. Entri, due ragazzini al banco, e ti ritrovi circondato di maglie nere, una foto di Mussolini e sciarpe dei "Diffidati". L'ultradestra qui? Già qui, forse la tregua regge incredibilmente perché sono tutti romanisti e di San Lorenzo. I Boys comunque non hanno posizione ufficiale. Nemmeno Spadino capo degli Ultras Romani che pure è vicino ai Sensi si esprime. Soros ha il via libera anche dei duri?

Mentre si va a Torrevecchia arrivano pure le posizioni dei candidati sindaci Alemanno e Rutelli. Quasi la stesse. Alemanno: "Tema di stretta pertinenza sportiva. Comunque vigileremo perché nessuno espropri i tifosi della società del cuore. Per lo stadio pronti a metterci il terreno". Però... Rutelli: "Chi vuole investire nella Roma deve dare garanzie di grandi acquisti e non fare solo un'operazione finanziaria: non si deve chiudere la porta a nessuno, ma "occhio" a che le cose durino nel tempo".

Ed eccoci a Torrevecchia, tra il Raccordo Anulare e il Gemelli, l'ospedale del Papa. In questi chilometri di verde Sensi ha avuto terreni da edificare. Hanno detto che qui, appoggiato al raccordo, Soros potrebbe fare il nuovo stadio: 100-150 milioni di euro in cemento, ferro e vetro, stile Emirates Stadium dell'Arsenal. Ma per ora i terreni non sono nell'affare. Altri dicono Magliana o Fiumicino: addio Olimpico. Comunque anche qui, nelle zone dei Sensi, butta male. Il Roma Store di via di Torrevecchia è chiuso e sulla serranda una botta di spray nero: "Rosella Sensi Boia!" E' proprio finita.

E' sera, pure l'autoradio è sfinita. "Oh sentite questa! Se son Soros fioriranno!". "Soros de seras trattativa se speras". Ci mancava solo il cabaret.

I colloqui tra George Soros e la famiglia Sensi per la Roma sono finiti su un binario morto. Il finanziere americano, come risulta a Radiocor, ha deciso di abbandonare la partita per rilevare la «Magica» e, salvo colpi di scena, non tornerà in campo. Intanto UniCredit, principale creditore del gruppo Sensi, tiene d'occhio la vicenda, consapevole che la cessione del club alleggerirebbe la posizione debitoria della controllante Italpetroli.
