Francesco Totti is almost certainly out of AS Roma's meeting with Manchester United FC on Tuesday after suffering a thigh injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Cagliari Calcio. The Roma captain played the whole 90 minutes at Cagliari, cancelling out Matteo Ferrari's own goal with a sumptuous free-kick on the stroke of half-time, yet later complained of a problem in his left thigh. After initial examinations club doctors have prescribed "a few days of rest", meaning he would miss the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against United at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday. The 31-year-old is likely to be replaced by Mirko Vučinić, who came in for the injured Totti for two group stage games in November and scored twice.

Terrible news, but I would still wait until closer to Tuesday evening to believe if he is definitely out. Its clear he was struggling with a thigh strain against Cagliari (which also raises the question as to why Spalletti didn't take him off), but its conceivable that injuries of this nature can be exaggerated. He may recover and play some part, possibly from the bench. Perhaps I'm just being the eternal optimist but hey thats me. If not, fear not, my friends, for we have this man:

its the 'no-totti' effect that dino kept creaming about before the world cup. when totti's not there, everybody steps up. you guys still have enough quality to see them through.

What you can say for Italy you can't say for Roma. Although Roma were doing pretty good 2 years ago without Totti and actually avoided relegation. In this type of game, you need all your champions. Roma without Totti is gonna be killer. Vucinic?? Your CL hangs on the shoulders of this clown???

I'm a little upset with Spalletti over this Totti injury. He could have taken him off before using his final 2 substitutions but chose to keep him out there. Whether this would have made a difference or not, I don't know. Perhaps the prudent thing would have been to sit him for Cagliari since he had a knee problem anyway.

I have to say, I think we're fucked. As Dino said, in a game like this, you need your champions. We all know that Totti does not have to score to be effective. Sometimes the attention he draws on the pitch is good enough to make a difference. Mirko is going to have to play his ass off.
