Roma & Real Fight It Out For Thiago

Roma and Real Madrid are battling for the signature of Santos sensation Thiago Carleto, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

The left back, who turns 19 later this month, is widely regarded as one of the most explosive young talents in Brazilian football, and has already been labelled as the photocopy of former Selecao star Roberto Carlos.

Roberto Carlos of course spent the majority of his career at Madrid, but the club have failed to find an adequate replacement since he joined Fenerbahce last summer.

Gabriel Heinze, Miguel Torres, Royston Drenthe and Marcelo have all been unimpressive in the role, and the Spanish giants are searching around for an alternative.

The Gazzetta says that they are preparing a bid for Thiago, although they face competition from last night’s Champions League conquerors Roma.

The Giallorossi are also in need of a left-back as they currently possess just two in their first-team squad, the 33-year-old Max Tonetto, and the inexperienced 20-year-old Vitorino Antnes.

Roma are hoping that their large Brazilian contingent, which already includes the likes of Mancini, Taddei and Juan, will help convince Thiago to choose them over Madrid. A price of around €6.5m has been mooted.

Here is the penalty incident. It is a close call, but it is clearly outside the box, and the referee has a perfect view of it only a few feet away, terrible decision:

i think they called the second contact on tognozzi (#14), which if there was contact, was inside the box. i just cant see conclusively if he actually made contact with cambiasso.

they just showed it on rai and they made the same assumption as i did above. they think it was tognozzi's contact that incited the pk call.

there was a foul on the play, but i agree with shield that it should have been a free kick on the edge of the box, simply because of the uncertainty. for christ's sake, cambiasso was running with the ball away from the reggina goal, so how that can be viewed as a scoring chance is beyond me. fifa needs to do something about these soft penalties because they are ruining the game. it shouldn't be enough to be fouled inside the box to get one, but there should be a clear scoring opportunity as well.

still, in this game i have to say that inter lead deservedly. cesar did have to make some good saves, but those were all saves he should make as the shots were either from distance or bad angles.

bagg, i agree it was probably 'soft' but cambiasso was off balance from the first contact at the edge and then the second contact in the box, as light as it was, was the 'cause' for the call.

there was no contact... the defender did raise his foot but not enough to make him fall like that. If you look at the replays his front leg lands perfectly, then he falls...
