Capello adapted to employ the famously spectacular 3-5-2 when he won lo scudetto with Roma, getting the most outta Cafu and Candela on the flanks and Totti as a devastating trequartista. Later he did seem to stick to a strict 4-4-2. But Lippi is probably the best example of a coach tailoring a formation to suit the players he has at his disposal alright.

I don't know with Donadoni. I do like his attacking three man forward-line with two wide players in support of ToniGol, but if there is no real trequartista ala Totti to play then he should just play a central-midfield line of DDR-Pirlo-Gattuso. That is an unbeatable midfield (with Ambro as backup). Perrotta is a key player in Roma's system but I don't know about playing him behind Toni for the Azzurri. Rosina or even Aquilani would be more suited.

Preparing for Italy-Portugal: Coach Roberto Donadoni Talks About His Most Recent Azzurri Call-Ups

Alessandro Gamberini will be joining the Azzurri group shortly, replacing the injured Franco Semioli. Marco Materazzi is struggling with some back problems, but should regularly feature in the squad for Wednesday’s friendly match against Portugal. So should Marco Borriello, despite the knock the Genoa striker picked up in the match vs. Catania. Perusing the rest of the Azzurri call-ups however, aside from the injured Gattuso and Camoranesi, it is surprising not to find common household names such as The Waterboy, Cassano, Gilardino, Iaquinta, and Panucci.

For Roberto Donadoni this is perfectly normal, as the Italian coach is “planning to test a few additional optionsâ€
