Happy New Year to all. Let this be the year were seriea.forumcircle.com rules the interweb. Maro, I'd tell you how many pints I drank on Monday night but I honestly can't remember, the whole Christmas was a blur to be honest. Good fun though. Actually those photos of Benazir aren't that great except for one where she looks decent. Maybe it's the whole "power" thing that made her attractive. This time every year the British media whips itself into a frenzy thinking that if it tells itself often enough that this is the most exciting weekend in the footballing year, when real grass-roots football is celebrated and upsets abound that it might just about start believing it's true. Oldham knocked Everton out of the greatest cup competition in the world. Excuse me while I go and discharge my erection.

Maro, your currently reside and make your living in the country, the least you could do is show the proper respect for the greatest cup competition in the world. You should consider it a privilege and an honour to watch the FA Cup. According to Rio Ferdinand it is up there alongside the Champions League in terms of importance. John Motson will tell you its more important than the World Cup. Yes, the FAg Cup has it all. Still, its nothing compared to the Coppa Italia (which can attract up to 1,000 people per game, say woo woo). The FA Cup is of course overhyped to the max but it does have a good format, with an open draw the whole way through, and really the Coppa Italia has to change to this format sooner or later to revitalise the competition. With that in mind I see there is also talk of a pay-per-view 'revolution' with regard to the scheduling of Serie A games and kick-off times. Seems like a good move.

Back in work today – I nearly forgot how to type.

I'm actually surprised there's not more transfer rumours flying around at this stage... The maddest one I've heard is Christian Vieri to Man Utd. My friend is convinced its gonna happen. I think it actually will be a quiet enough transfer period for us this time round, with perhaps the only incoming or outgoing change being perhaps the arrival of a back-up centre-forward, possibly on loan (say someone like Eto or Ibra, who would be solid cover for The LitM).

Speaking of FA Cup, a maltese guy just knocked out Blackburn out of that competition. Previously, he had knocked out Man U too. For a first division team,its quite a feat.

Lomba, come on, now. I mean, seriously - how could you confuse the Worthless Cup and the Greatest Cup Competition in the World? ManUre would never get knocked out by lowly Coventry in the Glorious FA Cup in which a team would never field an under-strength side.

Shield, you're probably right. I just can't help but feel that the greater importance placed on European competitions and the enlarging of the CL in particular mean that the national cup competitions are a bit of an anachronism. That and the increasing amounts of money involved which make survival in the top leagues so much more important than the winning of any Cup trophy and qualification in Europe more important too. Unless you change the financial incentives radically then no-one's going to take it so seriously and there's no way you'd get people to change those incentives.
