The FIGC will pay Conte a salary of €1.7m but Puma will add an estimated €2.5m-a-year which will make Conte the third best paid national team manager in the world after England's Roy Hodgson (€4.5m) and Russia's Fabio Capello (€9.0m).

First Tavecchio and now Conte, a man convicted of match-fixing. Other than Carletto he's the best choice for the spot in footballing terms but at some point integrity should matter, especially in that post.

To say nothing of the fact that there is a big question about whether Mario should be on the team given his issues with most of his teammates and now that's not even an option. I can't imagine Conte leaving Mario at home with Puma paying his salary and Mario being their highest paid Footballer.

I was happy with Conte as I agree with you he was second best choice after Ancellotti. I may even put Cappello ahead of him.

But it disappointed me greatly that Puma needed to step in for the salary.
I heard that Puma did it to buy the rights to his "image" but that maybe just to hide the fact that he needed the cash to be convinced

Balotelli shouldn't be on the team,or at the very least, should need to put on a hell of a display to earn his place

Mattia Destro will soon be that good a striker, no one will even remember who Mario Balotelli is. And it doesn't matter about Conte either, Tavecchio himself could be the manager yet with Destro up front they'd still win the World Cup (Tavecchio certainly wouldn't select Balotelli, thats for sure).

But then I forgot, Destro plays for Roma, so Conte won't pick him.

It is disappointing, the path which Italia have chosen. Again. First Tavecchio, now Conte, a man convicted of match-fixing, as DCG said. So much for reform.

Conte riparte dalla nazionale di Prandelli e la ridisegna con quel 5-3-2 che aveva caratterizzato al sua Juventus

Si parte dal 3-5-2 che, nelle intenzioni del c.t., dovrà diventare un 3-3-4 com’era nella Juve più offensiva. Si parte da una lista che non sarà troppo lontana da quella di Prandelli, perché questo offre la piazza. Antonio Conte non si ferma: incontri con i tecnici, telefonate, controlli. Sta per nascere la prima lista azzurra per Olanda (amichevole) e Norvegia (qualificazioni europee). Sabato i nomi e domenica sera il raduno a Coverciano. Con un principio: dentro i migliori, a prescindere dalla carta d’identità.





Proprio per questo non può essere escluso nessuno. Se per Pirlo è stato Conte a rivelare che è in programma una chiacchierata (e comunque lo juventino ha preso una botta e le prossime 48 ore saranno decisive per capire se potrà giocare sabato),lo stesso discorso riguarda Di Natale: è già in condizione e, visto che a settembre conta la forma, non sono impossibili sorprese. Anche Toni, quello che somiglia di più a Llorente, è nei radar. Oltretutto il c.t. dovrebbe allargare la lista a 25/26 nomi per un paio di motivi: 1) la vicinanza tra i due impegni; 2) la squalifica di Marchisio, dopo l’espulsione con la Costa Rica, obbligherà a infoltire la mediana per Oslo.





Portieri. Indiscutibili Buffon e Sirigu, è lotta per la terza maglia. Scuffet è un predestinato ma valutazioni sull’età suggeriscono di non precorrere i tempi. Ballottaggio quindi tra Perin e Marchetti che a Conte è sempre piaciuto (poteva diventare «secondo» alla Juve) e va recuperato.





Difensori. Qui non siamo messi bene. Scelte obbligate considerato che si va verso la difesa a tre: con Barzagli k.o., saranno convocati Ranocchia, Bonucci e Chiellini. Tra Astori e Paletta un altro centrale, senza dimenticare che De Rossi può scalare in difesa così come Thiago Motta (se dovesse essere convocato). Capitolo esterni: De Sciglio e Darmian non sono in dubbio, dovrebbe aggiungersi Pasqual. Si sta riflettendo su Abate e sul «tedesco» Donati (non titolare però).





Centrocampisti. Pirlo (se disponibile), Verratti, Candreva, Marchisio e De Rossi sono in prima fila. Dovrebbero aggiungersi a loro Florenzi, Aquilani e Poli. Uno tra Romulo e Giaccherini può tornare utile sulle fasce, così come Parolo in mezzo. Sotto osservazione Soriano (Samp), mezzala/trequartista in crescita tecnica.





Attaccanti. Balotelli si gioca tante chance: ci sarà. Con lui Immobile, Cerci e Destro. El Shaarawy è il tipo di giocatore che piace a Conte, questa può essere l’occasione per il rientro (a meno che Di Biagio non lo chieda per l’Under): Insigne domani deve convincere il c.t. che non ha apprezzato l’andata con l’Athletic. Naturalmente Toni e Di Natale sono lì, belli pronti. Aspettando Rossi.

Are we ever going to see a generation of players that'll even compare to Buffon, Toldo, Cannavaro, Maldini, Nesta, Panucci, Zambrotta, Pirlo, The Waterboy, Totti, Vieri, Inzaghi? Most of the players we have now aren't even as good as the players we had coming off the bench for these guys.
The team we had in 2006 was perfect in terms of balance and chemistry, but the 98 and 02 (even 04 Euro) teams were stacked. Honestly if it weren't for some very shady reffing, and some unimaginative coaching, Italy could've easily come away from the 90's- 2010 with at least 2-3 wc trophies and a couple Euro cups.
I mean maybe I'm looking back in hindsight with a bit of bias, but I'm trying to be as objective as possible.

Anyway, that's the end of my rant. I haven't posted in a while and I've been feeling a little nostalgic/frustrated, watching youtube videos + Totti vs. Fiorentina (+ Juve missing Pirlo vs Chievo). Watching these players slowly end their careers is definitely making me feel like my childhood/youth is slowly fading away...

Two thoughts on tonight's game.

1. Do you ever need to play with DDR in front of a back 3? for all that he looked utterly tranquil and composed in there - indeed, that's pretty much the point.

2. I'm not sure I've ever seen an Italian side with so little play between the lines. I'm not sure that's not inevitable when you play with a 3-5-2 with the midfield triangle a holder behind two rather than two behind a trequartista. The pattern of play was about keeping the ball with numbers behind it and then creating an overload with a penetrating run from a wingback. That's also the way Rube tended to play under Cunty, but I'm not sure it carries enough creative threat at the highest level. You could see when Candreva came on the only difference was you had a wingback who looked to take his man on; it didn't change the pattern of the play at all. It's a bit sad to see an Italian side with so little invention.

Turkish ref for Italy-Azerbaijan

Turkish referee Huseyn Gocek will officiate Italy’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Azerbaijan on Friday.

The game will be hosted by the Stadio Barbera in Palermo.

UEFA assigned Gocek to the match, assisted by Mete Kalkavan, Hakan Ceylan, Mustafa Emre Eyisoy and Orkun Aktas.
