A year later, Inter again demolished Sassuolo 7-0 with a Mauro Icardi hat-trick and Domenico Berardi sent off.
The Nerazzurri famously beat Sassuolo 7-0 last season, but things have changed since then with Eusebio Di Francesco’s side securing Serie A safety and launching Italian talents. This week Simone Zaza scored on his competitive senior Italy debut, while Domenico Berardi was on target for a European Under-21 Championship play-off spot. Rodrigo Palacio and Fredy Guarin were fit enough for the bench, but Nemanja Vidic was suspended following his red card against Torino and Jonathan injured.
Mauro Icardi sprung the offside trap on a Mateo Kovacic through ball, but needed three attempts to finally bundle it past a desperate Andrea Consigli.
Sassuolo fought back immediately and Sansone’s angled drive whistled inches wide, but they lost Sime Vrsaljko to a sprained ankle.
Inter doubled their lead with a well-worked goal, as two flicks from Icardi and Daniel Osvaldo sent Kovacic through to score his first Serie A goal.
Icardi got his second of the game with a fine curler from outside the box, though the Neroverdi defence allowed him far too much time and space on the ball.
When Sassuolo did go forward, Juan Jesus prevented Simone Zaza from taking advantage of a counter-attack.
Inter added a fourth before the break. Dodo deserved much of the credit, nutmegging Gazzola and forcing Consigli into a save, but Osvaldo turned in the rebound. It was his first Serie A goal for the Nerazzurri and, as promised, he celebrated with a Gabriel Batistuta style machine-gun mime.
Saphir Taider came on for Sassuolo in the second half, facing his parent club after this summer’s loan at Southampton was abandoned within three weeks.
That 7-0 was still very much on the cards and Icardi completed his hat-trick, running on to a Kovacic through ball to shoot on the spin from a tight angle.
Taider tested Handanovic, but Berardi let frustration get the better of him and was sent off for an elbow on Juan Jesus.
Osvaldo rounded out the scoreline to 6-0, allowed an easy tap-in when Fredy Guarin generously rolled across.
A year ago it was 7-0 and that result was replicated at San Siro, as Guarin got in on the act with a powerful finish.
Icardi's last 2 goals show the potential of a real striker ... let's take care of this kid guys. He's a new Vieri in the making.
Re: The spat between Thoir and Moratti, its all an invention ... Moratti loves Inter too much not to go to the stadium on Sunday. He sold 70% of Inter due to his love for the club realising that he and his family did not have the know-how on creating a brand out of the club in order to start adding more revenues. So, no matter what tuttosporc says, don't believe.
hi frank if them 2 progress that way they should by next year be worth 50 million each icardi wages jump from 500.000 to just over 3 millions that money don't come from inter, but he get 50% from new sponsors that already lining up
Danilo D’Ambrosio gave Inter a precious 1-0 Europa League victory away to 10-man Dnipro.
Elsewhere in Group F, Qarabag held St. Etienne to a 0-0 draw, so Inter are already two points clear at the top.
The Nerazzurri made numerous changes for the opening Group F fixture, which was moved to Kiev due to the unstable political situation in Dnipropetrovsk. Mateo Kovacic was injured and Gary Medel suspended, but Fredy Guarin was given a new more advanced role and the captain’s armband. Matheus missed out for the hosts, but Roman Zozulya and Ruslan Rotan shook off knocks to start.
Hernanes gave away possession for a dangerous counter-attack, but Artem Fedetskiy’s strike was deflected wide by Dodo. Zozulya was booked for an elbow that left Yann M’Vila with a cut to the head.
Zdravko Kuzmanovic long-range efforts were charged down and his header whistled just over.
Inter had penalty appeals on the stroke of half-time, as Guarin’s cross for Mauro Icardi appeared to hit ex-Fiorentina defender Ondrej Mazuch on the arm, but the referee waved play on.
Guarin should’ve scored after the restart when he ran on to a Hernanes pass, but the Colombia international ballooned his finish over the bar.
There was an even better chance, but Danilo D’Ambrosio fired at the goalkeeper from point-blank range and Denis Boyko recovered to beat away the Mauro Icardi follow-up too.
Yevhen Konoplyanka unleashed a screamer that skimmed the upright with Handanovic seemingly beaten, but Dnipro went down to 10 men for captain Rotan’s second bookable offence on Guarin.
Inter took full advantage, breaking the deadlock soon after with D’Ambrosio pouncing on a poor Fedetskiy clearance to nutmeg Boyko.
Nemanja Vidic fired wide, Guarin forced a save out of Boyko from distance and Icardi wasted a late counter-attack.
FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio said Milan hosting the 2016 Champions League Final is “an extraordinary opportunity.”
UEFA announced the decision this evening to award the game to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza – more commonly known as San Siro – but it had already been reported for several months.
“We can finally celebrate,” Tavecchio told reporters. “It is wonderful news for Italian football, which has the ambition of being an absolute protagonist in Europe again, also through the organisation of big events like this and Euro 2020 in Rome.
“The Champions League Final in particular for its economic impact on the territory will be an extraordinary opportunity for Milan, adding to the benefits expected from Expo 2015.
“I am certain the local administration, who for some time have planned important investments for its citizens, will be able to make full advantage of the opportunities around this sporting event.
“I also hope that we will be able to see at least one Italian team on the field that day.”
Disappointing result yesterday. Especially considering the fact that we had started the game in effect with a 1-0 score. The team reacted well, the game was in control and Inter were looking as if they were heading for a win in the second half. Then Mazzarri decided to change to a 4-3-3 formation and not only we did not win, but, we also risked to lose the game big time.
Something else which is crystal clear is that we definitely need another forward. Palacio in not in form, but yet he was the only one on who Mazzarri could rely to add some firing power up forward.
Hopefully we will not have a repeat of last season where we drew a lot of away games which we could have easily won.
We had a good spell of 20 minutes in the second half until Juan Jesus was hooked off. It was the right decision but we could have still retained the 3-5-2 formation as Medel knows how to play as CB. We were all over the place after that. Mazzarri simply seems to throw on more strikers whenever we need to get a result and we totally lose our defensive shape.
On the whole, we looked out of sorts yesterday. Osvaldo kept losing the ball way too easily and prevented us from having some decent possession and moving up the pitch in the first half. Hernanes is probably in the worst form of his life.
Deja vu. We'll have many more games like these. I don't mind getting a draw against Palermo. I don't mind getting a draw against Torino (even though after the match, Mazzarri said that there won't be many who'll get a win against Torino in Turin, only to then be defeated by the almight Verona...). What really pisses me off is that after a fuckin year & half, Mazzarri wasn't capable of giving any sort of identity to his team. It seems he is only capable of telling his players where to stay on the pitch and that's it. I had really thought we had reached rock bottom with Ranieri in terms of play buildup, but Mazzarri beats him hands down. His only strategy is to have the defence throw the ball to the forwards, hoping that Icardi can create a miracle. Mazzarri is considered a mediocre coach by most followers, and even that IMO is an understatement.
Walter Mazzarri insists the 4-1 defeat to Cagliari was mainly down to his failure to rotate the Inter squad. “I take the blame.”
The Nerazzurri had been unbeaten and conceded only one goal in all competition this season, but were hammered at San Siro after Yuto Nagatomo saw red.
“I probably made some mistakes when evaluating the squad rotation,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“I thought the team was in great shape this week and didn’t pay enough attention to the fitness levels, so kept some players who were on their third or fourth games in a row. It showed. “Cagliari were vehement on the ball and we could not keep up our style of football without good fitness levels.
“Of course, once it rains then it pours, as we went down to 10 men! An experienced team would’ve sat back and controlled the situation, waited for the second half and not conceded four in the first half.
“It became impossible to turn it around by that point. It is a lesson, the lads will learn from this and I already said that to the players.”
Nemanja Vidic has struggled to settle in Serie A and gave away a penalty – saved by Samir Handanovic – for his mistimed tackle.
“He is probably one of those I used too much,” continued Mazzarri.
“He’s strong and a leader, so I didn’t want to rest him, but he was fatigued and therefore below par. I take responsibility for that, as I should’ve made more changes and realised there are players who at this moment cannot play three or four times in a row.
“Fatigue has an effect on your physical and psychological performance. Some players weren’t sharp and all it takes is half a metre or your body leaning the wrong way when a player runs at you and there isn’t the strength to make up for it.
“Mind you, some of the players who seemed stranded in the first half were woken up by those four slaps in the face.”
Nagatomo received two yellow cards in quick succession, but could they have been avoided?
“When a Coach loses 4-1 and then comments on a red card, then he gets criticised. Of course there are moments in the game that can change it and if we hadn’t gone down to 10 then we wouldn’t have conceded four, but never mind.
“Nagatomo unfortunately made a mistake on the first goal, so he was irritable and in an attempt to make up for it perhaps went into the challenges with too much emphasis.”
