Addio al “made in Italy”.
Missing our first game of the season today - flying home later this evening (and not landing until early Sunday morning). Poxy being away for the build up to a new campaign (although paradise is nice). Such excitement usually lasts until about the second or third game when we lose 4-2 to Empoli or Chievo, but perhaps this season will be different.
Everyone confident for tonight? Be nice to get off to a good start with a convincing win, but I've a feeling we could be a bit slow to get going (new faces etc, new defence), and Fiorentina can cause us problems (even if they are missing a few).
If Iturbe becomes a big hit with the tifosi will the phenomenon become known as massiturbation? One to ponder. And why are we - seemingly - so interested in Rabiot? Is it just because it'll be a great deal (plusvalenza etc.)? Or is it a sign that he might come instead of a central defender and De Rossi be the fourth option there? These most recent moves seem a bit strange to me - they seem to be muddying the work that's already been done. Why Holebas? A fourth left-back in the squad? DDR, Pjanic, Strootman, Niggernoolan, Keita, Rabiot, Ucan, Paredes (Florenzi)??
What strikes me most about Rabiot (if it turns out to be true) is the finances and age of the player mirrors Lamela. It's notable in that 3 years ago such transactions were seen as big news and were accompanied by the "the next Totti"
Yes, point taken; on the other hand, Lamela and Rabiot are different kinds of players positionally and it's not at all clear that Rabiot would, this year or next, improve our first 11. For me, the comparison with Iturbe is the really striking one - one could just about propose that the difference between the fees paid for Lamela and Iturbe equal the 'plusvalenza' on Lamela's subsequent sale and/or the injection of CL funds.
1. It was striking how much our tactical set-up seemed to be designed to get Pjanic free, to play both between the lines and beyond the front three.
2. Niggernoolan had a terrific game, of course, as did DDR - more quietly - but the real principle evident there was the effect of having two 'incontristi', or, perhaps better, two properly able defensive players in that midfield trio. The contrast with some of the preseason games I saw was stark. The key to Garcia's defensive set-up - as with anyone's, surely - is the protection in front of the back 4.
3. I always quite rated what Bradley brought to the table, irritating as he was in certain situations; the difference between him and Niggernoolan in terms of technical quality and preparedness to take responsibility for making things happen going forwards is a hell of a lot more than the difference in price the two commanded.
4. Manolas did fine; he looks to win the ball early which is important in Garcia's set-up, but also risky. He certainly also made Astori look more comfortable on the left-side of the parternship.
5. Cole did fine, as did Torosidis. He's a much better player defensively than many recognise. Torosidis is also an excellent cog in a working mechanism. Quite whether either is incisive enough going forward remains to be seen. DCG expressed his sense that Torosidis doesn't get the credit he deserves; one might be inclined to say the same about De Sanctis.
6. It was very striking how much of the time Gervinho played through the middle. It was also striking how often Totti came deep to pick up the ball. None of that, of course, is new, but the balance seemed to me new. It might be a good sign for Destro. I was also reminded of Enrique's set-up, where the wide-forwards are actually at least as much 'strikers' as 'wingers' in terms of the positions they take up and the roles they're asked to play.
7. Fiorentina are a good team and put us under pressure, but the ability to control possession, dismantle a threat on the counter, and create chances on show in that first half were the hallmarks of the side at its best last year.
8. The contrast between Pjanic and Pizarro is very striking. I love the Pizza; he's a wonderful player and some of the stuff he did last night was terrific. Pjanic has another step of pace and power, though, and an ability to beat a man which gives an entirely different dimension to his game.
9. How Spags must have yearned for players lie Gervinho and Iturbe - players who carry a threat on the ball but who are also prepared to make runs in behind, to stretch the game. He always whinged about how Vooch and Menez never offered the fabled profondita' because they always wanted the ball to feet, to be the ones who made something happen. Surround Totti with runners who will attack space, but who are also good enough to keep it in tight spaces, and you will create something formidable.
