That's true, he's four years left on his contract too, even if he is on only a paltry €1m a year (wouldn't get out of bed for it myself), so the club could easily tell him to shut the fuck up and honour his contract. Thats may explain why he is just saying this in order to get a better deal here, as a payrise was coming his way, but its a bad way to go about it.

Of course, on the back of his words the management could also actively look to sell him to the highest bidder, which perhaps secretly they'll be happy about as he should garner a big transfer fee with all the interest in him.

Anyone think he actually may stay? The club are actively looking to sell him, €40m price tag.

Apparently Roma proposed an increase of about €600,000 – bringing his current deal of €1.2m up to €1.8mn (net), but Benatia's representatives wanted his salary at least doubled to around €2.9m (plus bonuses which would bring it closer to €4). A similar deal to what Pjanic got, then. You could argue that he is deserving of such a high salary, at least in terms of the ridiculously high wages that players are paid these days – if there's any player which is worthy of a such a wage it is Benatia. You could also say that this low offer which was proposed to him was the reason he spoke out as he did in that interview.

Thats clutching at straws, I know, his interview was ridiculous and shocking, but if the club are serious about mixing with Europe's elite as they claim all the time then perhaps paying big wages for the big players is what is needed (and lets be honest, €4m isn't even close to the really big boys).

I don't see the big deal really. You're 27, this is your one chance at a lot of money, you're in a profession where your retired at 33-34 yrs old.

You're not going to be getting sponsorship deals given your background. You've come to a club 1 year ago. It's not your hometown club, it's not even your country.

Who here is gonna tell me they wouldn't want to make 8 or 9 million more dollars before they retire in 5 years so they can go to a bigger club, with more prestige and more money when your current club you have no emotional attachment to?

First, the guy signed a contract. Roma is under no obligation to increase his wages through a renegotiation a year after a contract was signed. Roma is also under no obligation to transfer him so he can make more money elsewhere. He will be leaving, however. Of that, I have no doubt.

Is that a women's team? Twelve months ago Benatia was worth whatever we paid for him and was delighted to sign the contract we offered him. Now he's suddenly a completely different player worth so much more? I like Garcia, but I'd be surprised if he's developed Benatia that much in twelve months. As one of the punters - presumably a former Roma player - said, remind me again what exactly these punks have won this year? Either the rest of the world's scouts are seriously poor or he's suddenly seriously overvalued by himself and by others.

Agent: Mehdi Benatia Did Not Say He Wanted To Leave Roma

Mehdi Benatia's agent has sought to play down rumours that his client is looking to leave Roma after the defender recently said that he would have to think about an offer from the likes of Barcelona or Manchester City. Benatia's agent, Moussa Sissoko, told tuttomercatoweb.com that Benatia's words have been manipulated by reporters who picked up on his comments about Europe's top clubs.

"Let's be clear, he didn't say that he wanted to leave", Sissoko stated. "Mehdi limited his answer to a specific question about Roma and his contract by saying that he was made an offer and it was refused. There's no bad feelings, it's just the truth. This doesn't mean that he'll leave though, because Roma own him and it's up to the club to decide.

"All [his words] have been manipulated. Mehdi didn't say that he was dreaming of going to Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Manchester City. It's natural that he is flattered by the interest of these big clubs, and that seems normal to me. What has come out of that interview are misunderstandings".

Update 22.00: Sissoko later also spoke to calciomercato.it, where he emphasised that Benatia had underlined his commitment to Roma to the directors.

"Mehdi has never said that he wanted to leave. He simply said that he didn't agree with Roma's offer - that's the truth", the agent commented.

"Then when he spoke about the big clubs that were following him, he simply said that they were talking about clubs that would make every player dream. That's also the truth.

"We've been aware of interest from big clubs since January, but Mehdi has always told the Roma directors that he wants to stay in the capital. He has always been completely honest with the club.

"He's buying a house in the capital. He signed a five-year contract with Roma and has four years left - he's not in a strong position to demand a transfer. If he does leave, it will only be because it's been decided on by Roma".
