It's funny that Mazzarri still doesn't accept comparisons with Stramaccioni. Right now, Mazzarri has the same points Strama had last year at this point. However Strama had to start the season in mid-july because of the Europa league. The same Europa league which we had to do up till the quarter finals, unlike this year. That's not to mention the enormous amounts of injuries last year. And not to forget that Mazzarri got Hernanes in January, while Strama only got Sneijder sold.. So yeah, Mazzarri is right at not accepting that his year be compared with Strama's... He should just say his year is much worse and shut up instead of trying to find a million excuses (as usual, it's NEVER his fault). And I still hear of people willing to give this guy a chance... For Christ's sake.
I think I said in the Roma thread when they were linked with Mazzarri that his moaning would really concern me.
I've no problem with managers blaming whatever they fancy in public so long as the impression is given that they are saying/thinking something else in private and there is some evidence they are trying to correct faults.
I'd worry that Mazzarri really believes in the excuses he keeps putting forward and that means he isn't seeing his own failings and therefore isn't capable of learning from mistakes and improving.
English papers claim Inter are set to poach Manchester United chief operations officer Michael Bolingbroke.
The Daily Mail reported today that new Inter President Erick Thohir head-hunted Bolingbroke because he wants to copy United’s successful marketing strategies in the Asian market.
Bolingbroke is open to leaving Old Trafford after suggestions he was “marginalised” by the arrival of Ed Woodward and Richard Arnold.
The move to Inter won’t occur until June and it’s claimed Bolingbroke will continue to work at Manchester United for the rest of this season.
Despite comments to the contrary, reports in the Italian Press claim that Erick Thohir is lining up a replacement for Walter Mazzarri.
The Inter President has consistently claimed that the Coach will still be in charge of the Nerazzurri next season.
But after they slipped once again this weekend, drawing 2-2 with Bologna to leave them level on points with Parma in sixth, the Corriere dello Sport believe that the owner is considering his Coach’s future.
Qualifying for the Europa League is an absolute must for the Indonesian businessman, but the paper reports that even that may not be enough to secure Mazzarri’s future.
Sampdoria’s Sinisa Mihajlovic and Ajax boss Frank De Boer are both, once again, linked with the position.
But former Swansea tactician Michael Laudrup is another name that’s been thrown into the fold this morning.
Frank de Boer would bring order to Spurs after Tim Sherwood circus
Tim Sherwood won't survive beyond the summer. You have to ask yourself if you are a Spurs fan, would you really want him as your manager? The answer would have to be no. Just because of the way he has conducted himself in certain situations. He has shown his inexperience. You can't go from managing Under-21s, and get away with the same treatment when you are dealing with seasoned professionals. The Ajax coach Frank de Boer is the right choice for the club rather than Louis van Gaal or Mauricio Pochettino. De Boer works with youngsters at Ajax. He was a great player, a well respected player. He can attract players from all over the world because of his name. And he will sort out Tottenham's youth system. If you tell him he has to win the Premiershit, don't bother calling him. He won't do that. But he would make Christian Eriksen his main man at Spurs because he did that at Ajax, and he would also sort out the structure of the club. He suits the club better than Van Gaal. They need a young coach who is proven. Andre Villas-Boas was young, but De Boer is a fine coach and was a great player. That is the hardest thing to do: being a great player then becoming a decent coach. He has worked within the youth system before he became a manager in Holland. British players want to move straight to a big job because their ego says: 'Get me in the papers every week.' Dutch players are happy to go back to basics to work with the youth coming through. And that helps them when the time comes to make the step up. You have to do that. The Dutch FA demand that. You cannot manage a Dutch team unless you have coached in the country's youth system. We pay peanuts to people who should be rewarded for dealing with our future players, but they get no reward for it. And then we wonder why we're struggling to produce quality. The top coaches don't want to work in that system because the financial rewards are not enough. Sherwood needed a lot longer working with the younger players at Spurs before he was ready for the top job as White Hart Lane. You would have expected someone like Tim to be a lot cleverer in the way he has gone about it. One thing he wouldn't haven't stood for when he was a player was a manager saying the kind of things he has had to say about the team in certain press conferences. Once you go down the road of criticising players to the media, you are onto a loser. Telling newspapers what you think and shouting and screaming at players on the touchline doesn't work. If it ever did work. If you want a good return from players who cost a lot of money, you try to be nice to them. Or at least keep the criticism as constructive as possible. He hasn't been very constructive in the way he has conducted himself. The main problem for him is that he has put himself in that position which makes you wonder if he will have any future at Spurs after the season ends. Would it be in the best interests of Tottenham and Tim if he maybe moves on somewhere else rather than return to coaching duties? Perhaps so. That would maybe go for Les Ferdinand too. I can imagine there would be a bit of relief among quite a few of the players hearing that he is going. The ones that fell out of favour with AVB were maybe happy with him initially, especially Emmanuel Adebayor who was brought back into the team, but the honeymoon period ended fairly quickly. It has virtually become about Tim going to the press rather than about the team and the individual players. A lot of people are saying the chief exec Daniel Levy should be going too, due to the turnover of managers at the club and the latest problems with AVB and now Tim. I don't really agree with that. You can look at the top, but maybe the one mistake Levy made was getting rid of AVB too quickly. He could have kept him a bit longer because at least he would have had a structure, and a team playing in a pattern. He would also have had a better idea of what their achievements were. It would have maybe been AVB trying to win 1-0, but at least there would have been something positive coming from it. Since AVB has gone, Spurs have gone backwards in their general standard of play. No one knows what they are doing next. Not even the players. They haven't deserved to have win so many games. Sunderland did their best last night to make Spurs look good. And they weren't even that impressive in winning 5-1. Sunderland were just bad. Sherwood hasn't taken Spurs forward from AVB, who lacked a playing career that would have helped him understand professional players better. Sherwood arrived in a position that every ex-professional would like to be in. But when you get there, you have to remember that you were also a professional. It is easy to be critical. But surely you have to remember how you reacted to criticism when you were a player, and what managers were saying about you. You have to remember what you didn't like. If you can man-manage players, it makes such a difference. The 4-0 loss to Liverfekkin'wankscum at Anfield will do down as one of the worst performance in Tottenham's history over the past 10 or 15 years. It was utterly inept. But that is what you can maybe expect when a manager sits in the stand looking helpless rather than coming down to the touchline to speak to the players. Coaching and getting the best out of players is an art form in itself. In the Premiershit, you need a coach who can assess players and styles of players. Proper coaching is learned in the lower divisions in England. That is where good British coaches have learnt how to deal with youngsters, and how individual players tick. Tim hasn't done that side of it. He has come in bellowing, shouting and screaming. He is telling people he isn't going to walk away from the job. He wants this, he wants that. Sometimes silence is golden. He will have plenty of time to work that one out when he is replaced in the close season.
Handanavoic was unbelievable yesterday. Those saves from Sansone's freekick and the volley at half time were better than the penalty save. We would have been down by at least 3 goals if not for him, we played like crap in the first half.
Serie A Week 34 - 19 Apr 2014 Parma 0 - 2 Inter Rolando 48 (I), Guarin 89 (I) Stadio Ennio Tardini
Inter consolidated fifth place by beating 10-man Parma 2-0 at the Tardini after Antonio Cassano’s penalty was saved.
This was practically a play-off for Europe, as the Ducali were just two points behind fifth-placed Inter going into the Easter weekend. Antonio Cassano returned from two weeks out with a sprained ankle to face his former club, having left over the summer following a row with Walter Mazzarri. Jonathan Biabiany was also ex-Nerazzurri, but Raffaele Palladino was preferred to Ezequiel Schelotto. Andrea Ranocchia sat out a ban with Juan Jesus, Jonathan and Ricky Alvarez sidelined.
Inter’s last win at the Stadio Tardini was in 2008, when they secured the Scudetto and sent the home side down to Serie B.
In the opening minute Antonio Mirante had to rush outside the box to clear an awkwardly bouncing long ball from Mauro Icardi with his head. Walter Samuel was booked and will be suspended against Napoli next week.
Samir Handanovic needed a fantastic one-handed save to deny Cassano’s header on a corner, then Alessandro Lucarelli wanted a penalty, but appeared to be dragging his foot looking for contact with Rolando.
Cassano hit the side-netting from a promising position, as he was clearly in a mood to impress Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli in the stands.
Inter emerged from their shells as time wore on and Icardi’s header whistled inches wide from a Hernanes corner. Rodrigo Palacio’s audacious half-volley was then palmed out from under the bar by Mirante.
Mirante was also called into action by a splendid Esteban Cambiasso half-volley that was arrowing its way into the near bottom corner.
Parma thought they would go into the break 1-0 up when Samuel tripped Marco Parolo with a mistimed challenge in the box. Cassano stepped up and saw his penalty fingertipped on to the upright by Handanovic, then the Parolo follow-up was also wide!
At the other end Inter almost scored, as Cambiasso’s strike bounced off the upright, hit Mirante in the back, but somehow rebounded away from the line rather than over it. This chance probably made Walter Mazzarri question the laws of physics.
Parma went down to 10 men within 40 seconds of the restart, as Gabriel Paletta had already been booked when he mistimed a challenge from behind on his old friend Rodrigo Palacio.
From that free kick by Hernanes, Inter took the lead with a curled set piece to reach Rolando’s totally free diving header on six yards.
Parma kept pushing despite being down to 10 men, as Parolo flashed a shot off target, Yuto Nagatomo risked an own goal to prevent Biabiany getting a tap-in, then Lucarelli nodded a Cassano corner on to the crossbar.
Ezequiel Schelotto came on to face his parent club, but almost immediately picked up an ankle injury and had to make way for Amauri, using up all the remaining substitutions.
Parma continued to push, but Lucarelli was pressed into losing the ball to spark a counter, from which Fredy Guarin drilled in a long-range strike.
Not a bad game at all last Saturday. I think that Kovacic is really improving defensively. He seems to be learning when he has to do the right runs at the right time.
President Erick Thohir maintains Walter Mazzarri is “a good Coach for us next season. I’m looking for stability.”
The patron is in Madrid to present an upcoming exhibition match between Inter and Real Madrid legends, but also discussed plans for next term.
“I’m keeping focused on our objectives. And today I was amazed by Real Madrid’s infrastructure for their youth team and first team. I think it’s one of the best in the world,” Thohir told media and the official Inter website.
“But for me the most important focus is on the club, the financial aspects, the strong management and the strong team we’re going to build. Then after three years we’re going to focus on infrastructure. Those are the steps we have to take.
“It doesn’t mean we don’t want to build a team. We’ve been discussing lots of things in the last few months with Coach Mazzarri. I think he’ll be a good Coach for us next season. I’m looking for stability. The owners believe in loyalty, they're not just looking for a quick fix.
“There has to be a blueprint and everything has to follow a strategy. But at the same time I want results. So it’s more than just a question of loyalty, because it’s no good without the results. Loyalty is very important to me, but so are the results.”
Thohir was asked if he had discussed players with Real Madrid President Florentino Perez during this trip, especially amid reports director Piero Ausilio had dinner with Alvaro Morata’s agents last night.
“No, I don’t think we’ll be discussing these things. The reason I’m here is to meet him for the first time and for Inter Forever. Also, it’s up to the sporting director to deal with signings, not me.
“It’s important to maintain a good relationship between the clubs. I believe there has to be mutual respect. Not just secret talks and striking a deal with the players without the club knowing. I don’t think that’s right. I’m a businessman and these things have to be based on trust. Not just taking advantage of an opportunity when it arises.”
Indonesian magnate Thohir also commented on rumours Singapore-based businessman Peter Lim is preparing an offer to buy into Milan.
“I know Peter Lim very well. He’s a good person but I can’t comment on his investments. I know he had been looking at Liverfekkin'wankscum and Valencia.
“But it’s good for me to have friends like him who own other teams, like Vincent Tan at Cardiff, or Tony Fernandes and Ruben at Queens Park Rangers. It makes for a good network and the clubs become more global.
“In Major League Soccer, Manchester City are investing in New York, and I also have investments in Washington DC. I think it’s good to see sport become more global and show that everyone loves football.”
Javier Zanetti will retire at the end of this season to become an Inter director, confirmed Erick Thohir.
The President spoke to journalists after a publicity event today and clarified the rumours that had been in the works for some time.
“The meetings with Zanetti have been going on for the last couple of months to understand his vision. The discussion is done already, he’ll become part of the management.”
The captain has been at the club for almost 19 years and turns 41 in August.
Thohir was also asked about transfer targets for the summer and warned there have to be reinforcements all over the field.
“You need to grow the revenue and make the club healthy, then you can spend the money. The media are the ones who say the names, not me! I will only announce the players when we sign them.
“It’s important for us to understand at this moment which players will stay and which players will not continue.
“In the January transfers, we only had Jonathan and Nagatomo, so we signed D’Ambrosio. Do we need another winger in that area? I say yes. So we’ll be looking to bring in that kind of player.
“We signed Vidic because we needed leadership at the back. Even in midfield we are very few and in attack we need to review also, so in the end how you balance a team is very important.”
He was then specifically asked whether Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko could be a reality or a dream for Inter.
“It can be anything, but I only announce the players that we sign, not the players that we dream.”
Erick Thohir has presented details of Inter’s €80m partnership deal and promised two purchases will be made this summer.
The Nerazzurri have today presented a new agreement signed with sports marketing firm Infront Sports & Media and their club President was at the conference to comment.
“I arrived here a couple of months ago with the idea of taking Serie A back to the pinnacle of world football,” Thohir explained to reporters on stage.
“We are one of the parts of this chain, as a club that believes in a new project, with a new strategy and with ideas in the pipeline.
“There are more and more partners who believe in our project, many are looking to implement initiatives that have been tried in England, and that some in Italy are also trying.
“There is a reason why Nike have believed in our project and it is important that my friend Marco [Bogarelli, President of Infront Italy] believes in this project.
“As a partner, the important thing is to understand each other, to have confidence, and to together construct the scheme.
“There is an agreement of €80m over four years, and these figures are a 50 per cent increase compared to the previous agreement.
“We will not stop here, we have other ideas for Inter. We want this club healthy again by creating things that will make us profitable, then there will be a number of purchasing campaigns, we will buy two new players.
“Also, very importantly, we want to build a brand on a global basis, and I think it is important to have partners with whom we can create a relationship that will help us to grow.
“Everything in our project is long-term, I would like to thank the whole team.”
Erick Thohir says that the entire Inter squad will be assessed in the summer, as he reflects on transfer plans further.
The President has today taken questions at the club’s shareholders’ meeting and reflected on rumours that to fund activity in the summer market, the club will first have to sell.
“After these three remaining games [of the season], with the sporting director and the Coach we will review the entire squad, starting with the players whose contracts are due,” Thohir has responded today.
“We are not saying that everyone will be renewed, it is necessary to assess. We will evaluate the performance of everyone.
“If you remember, in January we signed Hernanes for the option to play him in midfield, and D’Ambrosio to fill a void on the wings.
“In June we will sign another winger and even review another forward, as currently we have only Icardi, Palacio and Milito is expiring. We need to talk with him.
“It is nice to have big names, but the reality is that the negotiations are not guaranteed, I will announce the players when they are signed up, the rest is just rumours.
“It is necessary to have a complete team, to better face the next few seasons.”
Thohir was asked, though, whether the team need a big name signing to help drive his plans on brand development.
“Decisions must be taken on a collective level. I speak also about our major sponsors, to understand their developmental needs in the global market.
“In Asia there are 120m Inter fans, the brand is very well known. The fact that there are two or three very important players in terms of image, such as Yuto Nagatomo, this is important.
“We have also signed Nemanja Vidic, a player that is followed in Asia. He is a marketing tool but at the same time an important player, he is still captain of Manchester United.
“Talks are held with the technical and commercial sectors and are always linked to the budget.
“Hernanes at a strategic level has a reason, we have paid so much for him but at a strategy level he is important since the Brazilian market is significant.
“Speaking with Nike and with Pirelli we have realised the importance, but they will not buy the players for the club.”
The President also considered further Javier Zanetti’s move into management, which he confirmed yesterday.
“The captain will be part of the club, but we want to focus on upcoming matches. Yesterday I came in to support the team.
“Zanetti will now study English and some elements of management, which he needs to do, so as not to just know the sporting aspect.”
Thohir was asked about Walter Mazzarri’s position as Coach.
“We are fine with him, we need a Coach who shares with the staff the view of the market and work over a period of two-three years. Only in this way can we work with the aim of obtaining trophies.”
