Roma general manager Mauro Baldissoni spoke to Roma Channel in reaction to the decision of Mattia Destro’s 4 match ban:
“We are shocked and concerned about the decision that the sporting justice took. We already took a position about De Rossi, the choice of replays and TV debates is dangerous for the entire system. If an event takes place in front of the referee, you can talk more about slow motion instead of video replay. Today, the event is more grave because the incident was punished with a free-kick awarded to Cagliari. We are on the outside of the conditions for the use of video replay. It’s frustrating to be the only ones sent into the corner when thousands of similar incidents go unpunished. We have filed an urgent appeal, we’ll go the entire way.”
Roma are right to highlight the issue of there not appearing to be any proper procedure for reviewing games and choosing which incidents players out to be cited for, though. Far too often (in Scotland as well as Italy) it simply come down to whether the media decides to make a big deal out of an incident or not.
There's little doubt he deserved his ban, what he done was silly and clearly he had a slap at Astroi (not a punch), but the problem is that there are lots of little incidents and flash points like this in all Serie A games which go unpunished and not reviewed by video evidence.
My problem is why was this one reviewed by il giudice sportivo? The ref said he missed the incident, but why did il giudice sportive pick it up? Was it because it was replayed (in slow motion) so many times on Sky Italia and by various media sources that they felt they needed to act? If so, why aren't any of a number of dubious incidents involving Chiellini reviewed by video evidence? He had a swing at that Livorno striker yesterday, he had a very dodgy looking kick out at Merten's head against Napoli, I could go on and on. No clarity, no procedure, typical of the state of the league.
What matters in sport is that rules are applied evenly. So "deserve" becomes subjective. We see this in matches all the time, as long as rules are enforced by the official in the same manner for both teams then it's "fair".
When they review each tape and suspend people for arm strikes to the head (I'm looking at you Bonnuci) then he'll deserve the punishment delivered by the sporting judge. Until such time as that he doesn't "deserve" anything that doesn't involve a priest or a policeman.
That would be great news and I have to imagine we wouldn't have any problem getting him. Might cost us another co-ownership unless there is some predetermined riscatto.
”At the end of the season there will be time to evaluate things. In Italy there is too much talk about the transfer market, every day there is a new team, I don’t like this situation. I’m happy here at Roma, I only want to go to Champions League with this jersey. If then at the end of the season there is something big, it will be the club who communicates it to me”
In an interview with Sky Sport's programme I signori del calcio, Mehdi Benatia said that he does not want to leave Roma despite being linked with a number of clubs across Europe and instead wants to win trophies with the Giallorossi.
ROME - I wasn't expecting such a beautiful city, I loved visiting it with my wife and we're very happy to be able to live in such a nice city every day. When you play at Roma you're also lucky to have the support of the fans. I'm always here every day after training and when we win you can see that they're happy. Whether they're young or old there's a huge passion and I didn't expect how strong it would be. To know that they're there supporting me is important. Before the game against Bologna I spoke with my agent, he asked me to do the machine gun celebration and I did it. It was the week after my goal against Sampdoria and I've kept scoring since.
MARSEILLE - I grew up in Marseille, I learned things and I was fortunate to play in the first team. The supporters are very passionate there but in a different way to Roma fans. Marseille are the only team in France who have won the Champions League and now at Roma we're hoping to have a few things to celebrate, then we'll see how the city is.
UDINESE - I miss the people, I had three important years in Udine and discovered a lot of new things. It wasn't just football there for me, but also a new life - I became close to a lot of people. When I have time to return, I'll go with the family because I can't forget them. They made me happy. Guidolin is older than Garcia so he has more experience. The first time that I saw him, he seemed cold to me and I thought he'd be tough going because he's always focused on his work. Then I got to know him and he's just like that - when he works, he works and never gives up. He's always a bit irritable but determined, and he taught me a lot of things not just about football but about life.
GARCIA - I already knew Garcia a bit because he had a great reputation in France. He likes making his teams play well, he likes them to have fun. I've been with him for six or seven months now, I enjoy being with him and his staff - they are professionals doing the best job they can and that's partly why we're getting the results we are.
DI NATALE AND TOTTI - Di Natale is more of a true forward, he's more of a striker even if Totti has scored more goals than him. Totti was more of a trequartista. I watched Roma from a young age and Francesco was a trequartista, he played wider. But they are both two champions, they've done things that not everyone can do. Only a few players can do what they can do with the ball at their feet. When I speak with Francesco now, I talk about the same things that I talk about with Pjanic. He doesn't feel his age, he feels good - you can see that. It's normal that he has a few physical problems at 38, but he's a player who can make playing a match easy for you.
GERVINHO - He wasn't in the best of shape when he arrived because he'd lost confidence at Arsenal. He gets on well with Garcia and the coach quickly put his faith in him. He's brought something new to Italian football. There aren't any other players like him here, who rush past their markers and who have great pace. As everyone says, he could score a few more goals but he's never tired and that's an extra strength.
THIS SEASON - In my opinion you can always do more. What we're doing is great and we've won a lot of games. But we've also lost points that we could have avoided losing. I know we could have done more. Our mentality has been good, the opposition always make things difficult to you and you can't win every Sunday though.
JUVENTUS - You have to compliment Juventus because they're having an extraordinary season, even when they aren't playing well they score the goals they need to win. They have the right mentality.
CLOSED CURVE - I don't like playing without fans, it was horrible playing without the curve. What we hear in the stadiums isn't right either, but it doesn't just happen in Rome. Wherever we go there are chants against Roma that aren't pleasant. I hope that the supporters have understood that we need them. We could have won against Inter but it was difficult to make that extra effort to find a goal without the fans. There are a few people with odd ideas in 2014. If I hear chants against me, I wouldn't stop, because it's just two or three stupid people. At the end of the day if you come to the stadium to say these things, you aren't a person who deserves respect. Talking about them is already giving them too much attention.
NATIONAL TEAM - I had problems with injuries in France, and I was in the second division for two years. Then Morocco called me up at a difficult time and that was a great thing. I didn't think about it twice and I went. There have been a lot of things that have not gone according to plan, we've constantly changed coaches and not given anyone the time to do his work. If we lose three games we get rid of him. We're hosting the Africa Cup of Nations [in 2015] and the people are expecting a quality Morocco team, but we don't have a coach or a president. As captain of the national team it seemed right to me that I say and do something concrete, otherwise I should let someone else take the armband. I spoke with the federation and I hope that they do something. Football gives people comfort there and we can't go there just to go out in the group phase. If we want to make our fans happy we have to prepare for it well.
NASRI - He's like a brother, I was in the second division after I came back from my cruciate ligament injury when he told me that Wenger was looking for a defender and he wanted to talk to him about me. I said it was better that he didn't because I'd only played in the second division. He did it anyway, then I played in the Champions League qualifying round against Arsenal and Wenger recognised me. I knew that [Nasri] was a friend because he had been confident in my ability. I don't know if he's talked about me at City, but I'm enjoying myself at Roma and we have to finish the season as we started it. There will be time to talk about everything else.
TRANSFER MARKET - People talk more about this in Italy than in other countries. I don't like it because every time I open the newspaper I see a different team linked with me. I'm here now, first we have to get into the Champions League, then I'll talk with the club. If something huge happens and the club tells me that we have to sell, I'd understand because that's football. But I don't want to leave.
The Bald Algerian - He's not my idol, but the player that I liked most was The Bald Algerian. No one has done what he did. He was elegant, he won everything. As a defender I liked Maldini, he played from 17 until he was 40. He also won everything, I don't remember a game where he made a mistake - he was a machine that was always in form.
PRIVATE LIFE - I like being with my family, when we have the chance to spend a couple of days at home I like being with them and have fun with my children. They are unique, they never stop. I rarely read about football in the newspapers. I read the Quran. Every day we have a ritual to respect and I do everything I can to follow it, but it's not easy when living in Europe. My room-mate Pjanic knows this, I wouldn't go and say it to the others though. As I always say to my wife, I hope to do what I can to leave a good impression on my children. When I see my son or my daughter watch a video of me, I'm happy. They understand now that I play football, that I'm famous because when I go to the park with them people stop me to take photos. Sometimes I can't go, if they go to the park on a Friday or a Saturday I don't go because there are too many people. Everyone comes up to me, so I can't be close to them. In the end I want to leave a good mark on my children.
PJANIC - I'm always with Pjanic, we live close together. He's younger than me but he's mature, intelligent and a great player. He's a straightforward, calm person. He's aware he's doing a great job and that he's fortunate.
DREAMS - My dream is to win a trophy for Roma, because we have a fantastic group here and if we can win something that will be a huge moment for me.
