At least the news about Branca finally being sacked is good. I read he had an indefinite contract with the club, how awful is that. No wonder he did not care how he did in the transfer market. When you know no matter how bad you are at your job, you won't be sacked then where is the motivation. One of the many flaws of Morratti being a gentleman.
If there's one thing Erick Thohir has done to win over Inter fans, argues Jeremy Lim, it's getting rid of Marco Branca.
It might have taken Fredy Guarin’s transfer fiasco to spur thorough examination of Inter’s operations as an entity, but Erick Thohir’s regime is finally in full effect. The Indonesian’s arrival at club headquarters in the final week of January led directly to deals for Danilo D’Ambrosio and Hernanes being brokered. Not long after, it emerged the side were the favourites to land Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic in the summer.
Yet nothing has endeared Thohir to the Inter faithful up to this point more than news that Marco Branca was ousted from the management on Saturday. Once a striker for the Nerazzurri and even accorded hero status after netting famous winners in the Derby della Madonnina on a pair of occasions, Branca’s name had become vilified amongst the Ultras after numerous cases of mismanaging the San Siro side’s affairs. The unpopular transfer chief eventually cut ties after being held chiefly culpable for failing to preserve a squad that had won the Treble just over three years ago.
In reality, decline set in the moment Javier Zanetti hoisted the Champions League trophy at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2010. Jose Mourinho soon departed the team, but he was not to be their only casualty. Gabriele Oriali, the loyal club servant who orchestrated Inter’s finest moves from the past decade, revealed his disillusion with the setup two months after Inter’s triumph.
“After winning the Champions League, I thought I could enjoy a bit more success but I totally disagree with the decisions that were taken. Indeed, I’m not sure I will stay at Inter,” the transfer consultant stated. By October the club announced he had gone. “I’m not aware of the real reasons why I was released,” Oriali opened up afterwards. “After 30 years at Inter I thought that I had earned some respect and credibility. However, I was kicked out and I don’t know why. I just know after Mourinho left, President Massimo Moratti was allowed to be convinced by Branca and some other directors of a project that didn’t include me.”
Moratti’s decision to entrust Inter’s dealings to Branca proved in hindsight to be a faux pas of epic proportions. Missing the vital presence taken to operate at an administrative level, the 49-year-old’s tenure quickly exposed his fundamental lack of the necessary intuition and know-how to manage the outfit in evolving market conditions.
But with the baton well and truly passed, Inter were left to wave goodbye to the chances of continuity the treble had presented. Spurred by an ailing dynasty in Serie A and Europe that perpetuated from Rafael Benitez’s reign, Branca performed piecemeal dips in the transfer window without a defined plan to nurture his investments - Giampaolo Pazzini and Andrea Ranocchia arrived at La Pinetina for top dollar in January 2011, yet neither fulfilled their potential in an Inter shirt.
Branca’s haphazard spending continued that summer with the ill-considered signing of a spent Diego Forlan to plug the gaping hole left by Samuel Eto’o’s switch to Anzhi Makhachkala. Thiago Motta followed out of the club five months later. Without any clear technical blueprint to replace the squad’s eroded talent, Gian Piero Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri received no favours as their stints ended prematurely.
Still, the bizarre process of phasing out Inter’s legion of Treble veterans and promising youngsters with signings of insufficient calibre continued into the 2012-13 campaign. Antonio Cassano proved a colossal waste of wages, while Luca Caldirola and Giulio Donati were shipped off to the Bundesliga just weeks after reaching the European Under-21 Championship Final. Meanwhile, opportunity to sign talented Italian prospect Andrea Poli was spurned; instead, misfit Zdravko Kuzmanovic donned the famed Beneamata jersey later on in abject testimony of how Inter’s worth had fallen. Marko Livaja then made way for Lazio benchwarmer Tommaso Rocchi, the Croatian following former club youth products Mario Balotelli, Davide Santon, Luc Castaignos, Marco Faraoni and Philippe Coutinho out of the exit door.
Taking place before Fredy Guarin’s recent transfer conundrum was the ignominy of Wesley Sneijder’s exit last year after being frozen out of the starting XI over contractual disputes. The Dutchman was finally released for a mere €7.5m - poor reflection of his value as a San Siro favourite. This January though, Branca’s stake in the clumsy handling of team assets proved the final straw, and his own silence in the matter served as a tacit admission that his time was up.
Latest incarnations of a once-proud club have fallen short of expectations, and fault has been incontrovertibly traced to Branca’s antics. By belatedly removing a permanent itch from the backs of Inter’s fans, Thohir has left his mark on what could now turn out to be a genuine period of recovery for the fallen Milan giants.
This parody video of Branca's 'Facebook story' circulated days before the contract was terminated. Coincidence or final straw?
Inter President Erick Thohir reportedly has a list of candidates in mind to replace departed technical director Marco Branca.
Branca left the Nerazzurri with immediate effect on Saturday and, whilst the club indicated that his duties would be handed over to sporting director Pietro Ausilio, the club are seen as working on bringing in someone else long-term.
Quotidiano Sportivo are running that line and suggest that President Thohir has already drawn up a list of potential replacements, headed by Roma’s Walter Sabatini.
Former Milan and Inter Coach Leonardo, currently out of work after leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer as sporting director, is linked with the position also, as is Atalanta’s director general Pierpaolo Marino.
Inter and Milan have reportedly already decided that they will end cohabitation at San Siro, with the Rossoneri to move out by 2017.
Whilst the Nerazzurri have in previous years been working on a plan to move away from the Giuseppe Meazza stadium to build their own ground, recent reports have suggested it has been Milan pushing forward with such plans under Barbara Berlusconi’s guidance.
Speculation today is that the Diavolo have been working over the past six months on plans for a new stadium to be constructed six kilometres to the north-west, where the Fiera Milan exhibition is currently based and where Expo 2015 will be held.
Arexpo, formed by city authorities to buy up the area of land and oversee its development from 2015, confirmed in November Milan’s initial interest.
They have set a deadline of March 13 - latest March 14 - for proposals to be put forward for construction of a stadium on the land, planned as part of a wider multi-sports and functions development.
SportMediaset and Il Giorno say that Milan are going to come forward, with an aim to begin construction at the end of Expo 2015, in the autumn of that year, and have work completed in time for the 2016-17 season, although it may be more likely that the team cannot move in until the following year.
The Rossoneri and Inter are also seen as in agreement to end their sharing plan at San Siro, with Milan expected to confirm their plans over the course of the next month in time for Arexpo's deadline.
Inter, in turn, are speculated as favouring staying at the stadium and carrying out renovation work.
The two Milanese giants have shared the Giuseppe Meazza since the 1947-48 campaign. The ground will host the 2016 Champions League Final.
Speculation in Italy is that Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has already put pen to paper on a two-year contract with Inter.
The centre-back has been increasingly linked with a move out to Serie A at the expiry of his contract, which last week he confirmed he will not be renewing with the Red Devils.
Rai Sport today suggest that a deal with the Nerazzurri has already been reached and signed off on, with the 32-year-old apparently committing to an initial two-year deal at San Siro.
It is believed that Vidic’s contract will also hold an option for a third year and will see the Serbian collect €3.5m a year in wages.
Napoli and Juventus have both otherwise been linked with interest in the United centre-back.
Inter’s veteran Argentine contingent could all be leaving the club at the end of the season, it has been claimed.
Walter Samuel has already admitted that he will be departing the Nerazzurri in the summer, but Sky Sport Italia suggest a raft of others could also be joining him.
The station claims that Javier Zanetti, Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso could all be pushed out of the door at San Siro come the end of the current campaign.
They also report though, that Cambiasso could be the one that’s saved, but only as long as he agrees to half his current salary of €4.5m per season.
Reports in the Italian Press this afternoon claim that Nemanja Vidic’s transfer from Manchester United to Inter is set for completion.
The defender confirmed last week that he would be leaving the Old Trafford outfit when his contract expires at the end of the season.
And Corriere dello Sport write that the centre-back has already been in discussions with the Nerazzurri, and has met with the club’s medical staff in Serbia.
The paper reveals that the 32-year-old has undergone preliminary checks with the San Siro side’s doctors, with the transfer set to be confirmed soon.
It’s reported Inter and other Serie A clubs are looking to sign Patrice Evra from Manchester United.
According to Sky Sport Italia transfer pundit Gianluca Di Marzio, the Nerazzurri have already practically agreed terms with Nemanja Vidic and could grab Evra the same way.
Both defenders will be free agents at the end of the season, as their contracts at Old Trafford are due to expire.
There is one problem for Evra, as he is reportedly not prepared to miss out on Champions League football.
Inter are currently struggling in Serie A and seem unlikely to secure a top three finish.
Other clubs interested in Evra, who will turn 33 in May, include Juventus, Milan and Roma.
The Frenchman speaks fluent Italian, as he began his career in Serie C with Marsala and Monza from 1998 to 2000.
We are trying to rid our team of players that contributed to us winning a treble only to replace them with guys that are well on their way to hit their mid 30's. Were is this squad rejuvenation. Sure they are talented but how many seasons can we expect from them? Not to mention their salaries won't be low - something we are trying to lower!
