Fair enough on all accounts Collie. I think the fans in Rome have gone a bit over the top in their criticism of everything since the Coppa loss. It's not that I don't see and agree with much of the criticism, it's the ol' "even a stopped clocks right twice a day" theory.

If people focus on the true issues rather than just hating everything the man says or does, it may lead towards a desired result.

I feel that different decisions could have led to trophies last year or at least CL football. Zeman was a huge mistake, but one that many of us supported. It's a bit silly of me to crucify the man now, for a decision I was at least somewhat neutral to when it was made.

My heart wants to rip him for everything, my mind is forcing me to be intellectually honest.

So, they've apparently sold him for 30mil + bonuses according to Di Marzio. That's a bit less than what I was expecting him to go for, especially since reports were saying that we were holding out for something closer to 40. Now a couple of weeks left to reinvest that money into a new player at least. If they don't then this would be a worse disaster than it already is.

1. So Pallotta and his fellow Yanks lack subtlety, nuance, sophistication, maturity? They're Americans engaging with the old world - what do you expect? Patronising and infantile in response to layers of history and complexity. I should be very, very surprised, though, if he's not a rather cannier, sharper business man than I am and doesn't devote a lot more careful and rigorous and informed attention to Roma than I do.

2. I suppose Garcia has approved the Lamela move; perhaps he thinks Gervinho's a better fit or knows that Adrian Lopez is coming etc. etc. Swapping Lamela for Gervinho, though, is a crime against football in the same way that tactics which think they can do without Pizza are.

3. If Lamela becomes absolutely world class, he will be worth 100 mil; if he doesn't, he will never be worth more than 35.

I think much of this (by the fans in Rome, not you) is fueled by an Anti-American sentiment and the "shame" and subsequent rubbing of the nose by Lazio fans.

I'll blame the owner for a lot of things, I could blame him for us going out in the first round of the Coppa. I'm not sure I know how to blame him for getting to the final but losing to our city rival. I certainly don't blame him for spray paint, faux funerals or Ilary impersonators. (I know that wasn't your point)

If Lamela is sold, I DO expect him to tell me why we've gone from Lamela to Gervs, Marquinhos to Benatia and Ozzy to Gilardino. I'll even accept if he comes out and says, the money just isn't there. I won't like it, but I accept it.

With all that said, I'd love nothing more than to see fans stop showing up for games, like empty. I'd love it. Cause in the end that's all these owners will understand and I fucking can't stand his patronizing comments in silly youtube pressers.

I can only speak to what i've seen and the "American" comes up a lot and rarely in a positive context. Perhaps it's simply to point out he's an outsider and not specific to being an American.

I can tell you that i lived there in the late 90's and was in Italy on Sept. 11th and in Rome by Sept. 13th 2001 and it was beautiful to see all the support for the US plastered everywhere. I digress. Americans as a whole couldn't care less about Lance Armstrong or cycling. I'd be hard pressed to find a single one of my friends who'd ever watched 1 minute of the Tour live, literally.

With the notable exception of France, most Americans have a very positive view of Western Europe but rarely dig so deep as to concern themselves with the reasons behind anti-American sentiment real or imagined.

Also, some of my opinion is derived by friends and family in Rome. My Godfather in particular likes to point out the hate for the American Roma by fans in Rome. Although he's a Juventino from Turin so perhaps i should ignore him.

i'm not doom and gloom as much as some. In Garcia's system Gervs can probably be a more adequete replacement for Lamela than say in a Zeman system. Destro should hopefully have overtaken Ozzy this year. Our MF is probably better with Strootman and Florenzi's development (although i agree with Tom that he'll probably be an attacker)

Our D may even be better in the short term this year and we all know how i felt about Steck.

All that said, we're worse off long-term and in need of at least one central attacking player.

Again, for me that's a bit disingenuous because it suggests that they know what they've been doing - in the sense that they've genuinely been in control of what they've been doing. I'd imagine that at the beginning of the summer they didn't intend to sell Lamela but that an offer has come in that they believe is above the odds and so they've reacted and look like accepting. They're obliged to be reactive at the moment which makes it much harder to give the clear pronouncements you seem to be demanding.
