What if they were to use the money from Lamela's sale to cover Eto'o's wages?

Can't believe we're really considering Lamela. On holidays so haven't being following it, only seen headlines - is this really a possibility? Or are there other reasons for this speculation, like trying to offload Borriello, or sign Demba Ba (no grazie)? Selling Lamela would be such a bad move on so many levels. Yes, it's big money being offered, but less than a week before the big kick-off, on the back of selling Osvaldo, were does it leave the team? How do we replace these players? How is our new manager supposed to build a 'team'? How much money do we want to get from sales? What does it say about the club in selling lots of stars for big money? More importantly, what does it say about the intentions of our owners? We can be as anti-American as we want in terms of the direction they are taking this club and all the nonsense we've put up with, but really this would be the final straw with this ownership if it were to happen.

Selling Lamela would be basically removing any idea of "patience" and "project" They should just come out and say they're in it for the money. I'd have far more respect for them at that point.

Except one could argue that you'd have sold 2 of your top 3 players, your top 2 Goalscorers, your best defender.

Those aren't our most "talented" players and future stars. They were our best players now. Productive.

I would venture to suggest that both Eto'o and Nani are, at this moment in time, more complete, finished players than Lamela is; I'd also venture to suggest that Eto'o and Baa (is he as hawt as he sounds?) both give a completely different kind of profondita' from Lamela and Osvaldo (respectively) and so might fit the coach's pattern. I'm not saying that these are moves I'd make - I'd have stuck with Ozzie and I'd certainly have stuck with Lamela and left Gervinho at Arsewipe. I'm not really making a call that such moves would be right - I'm just trying to get my head around the sorts of terms on which they might make some kind of sense. Every season the side misses out on the CL is worth what, something like 30 mil at least? So if Eto'o gives us a jump in quality now, and Lamela doesn't, then it'd be financially sane with an eye on the future too, no?

Eto'o and Nani may be more complete players, but would they make Roma a winning team? Maybe they could have in those years Roma was a 2nd place team and just needed a 'bit' more, but I'm not convinced that's the case right now. This just looks like a banking move to me, cashing in on Lamela.

Maybe Sabatini is just trying to divest himself of South American youngsters.

It's all about Europe, and the CL in particular. They've been talking about the CL since day one, and two years later they still haven't reached that goal. This is why we suddenly have a shift in strategy where we move away from patient, youth oriented building of a squad to a more established win now strategy. As maro mentioned, missing out on the CL is huge financial burden, and I don't think the owners are willing to take another 2 seasons without it. This way, the sale of Lamela makes sense if we get someone who's already proven, rather than take a gamble on a player who may reach his potential in 2-3 years. If we make the CL this season, then I can see us shifting back a bit to the previous strategy.

I think Eto'o shows intent, but for me he's a replacement for Osvaldo. The Lamela deal is a separate consideration. Now, if they're using the Lamela cash to part-fund Eto'o while lining up a move for the likes of Eriksen or Abel Hernandez, who would both be cheap, comparatively ... that's a different matter. I'd think about it then.

The revolving door policy at Roma has to stop. The coach merry-go-round since Spal has been a joke, and now it's spread into the back-room staff and the players. Roma needs to settle down. I can't think of another club or group of fans less suited to this constant state of flux.
