As Maro said, what's the point in speculating, as recent as 30 months ago he was the best right back in the world. Lots can change in 30 months ill grant you but most thought Pirlo was washed up 30 months ago including Galliani.

Presumably the draw to try and get himself into the Selecao's plans for the home world cup has some part to play here too. I suppose one might also say, dcg, that maicon's game has always been rather more reliant on his engine than Pirlo's has; still, Fonz is probably right. I've never much liked him as a player; he's always seemed to me a bit of a headless chicken and a dumb player rather than a heads-up one. Perhaps we would benefit from a bit less thinking and a bit more directness and hard running; I really don't like the way he plays, though.
