They'll give an unproven Spanish guy a chance to build something at Roma because he was in the Barcelona system, then an imbecilic Czech re-tread gets a shot after a decade away from Serie A, but there is no chance to give a young Italian coach an opportunity. Continua il conto alla rovescia verso il punto zero, quello dell’annuncio ufficiale sul nuovo allenatore della Roma: Sabatini, nei giorni scorsi, ha aiutato la cronaca rivelando che la società punta su uno straniero ed il campo si è ristretto notevolmente, fino ad includere solamente pochi intimi. Secondo l’edizione odierna del «Corriere dello Sport» il prescelto è Rudi Garcia: l’ormai ex tecnico del Lille ha detto si al progetto romanista, per voce del suo procuratore Pascal Boisseau ha accettato la proposta giallorossa di due anni a 1,5 milioni a stagione, stringendo la mano a Sabatini durante un incontro avvenuto ieri a Barcellona. Sbaragliato il campo da avversari pericolosi come Bielsa, Blanc e Lucescu, Rudi Garcia sarà presentato probabilmente a metà della settimana prossima: nei pensieri dell’ormai plenipotenziario dirigente capitolino ci sarebbe l’idea di un evento vero e proprio in cui si possano regalare ai tifosi anche un paio di acquisti (Benatia e Nainggolan) per aiutarli a digerire l’amaro finale di stagione.

Rudi Garcia: A new philosophy

Last season was arguably a pivotal one in Ligue 1 history. With its 956 goals scored, it was the most prolific Ligue 1 season in over 25 years. The top three scorers (Giroud, Nene, Hazard) all reached the 20-goal mark, a feat that hadn’t been done in 12 years, since the days of Marco Simone, Sonny Anderson, and a certain David Trezeguet. And while the big-spending ways of PSG and the dazzling young talents of Montpellier are both playing their part in the evolution of Ligue 1 to a more attacking mentality, it all originated from Rudi Garcia.

Although Rudi Garcia’s managerial career began at St. Etienne, he first started making a name for himself when he was in charge of Dijon. In five years as manager, Garcia got Dijon promoted to Ligue 2 and took them to the semifinal of the Coupe de France. In 2007, after the departure of manager Frederic Hantz to Sochaux, Le Mans appointed Rudi Garcia at the helm of the club. Le Mans fans didn’t know what to expect from life without Hantz, after he got them two Coupe de la Ligue semifinals and a promotion in the space of two years. But Garcia’s season at Le Mans exceeded expectations as he helped them to their best ever league finish and another Coupe de la Ligue semifinal. And, most importantly, we were witnessing the beginnings of Rudi Garcia’s attacking play.

Garcia’s successful season with Le Mans and Claude Puel leaving for Lyon allowed Garcia to take charge of Lille in the summer of 2008. For Rudi Garcia, who spent six years at Lille as a player and played over one hundred games, the chance to manage his boyhood club was too good to turn down. He quickly got to work, laying the foundations of his eventual squad by signing loanee Rio Mavuba to a permanent deal, grabbing bulldog midfielder Florent Balmont from Nice after Makoun’s sell to Lyon, and promoting Eden Hazard to the senior team. He also brought in strikers Robert Vittek and Tulio de Melo, the Brazilian target-man he knew so well from his stint at Le Mans. After a good first season with Lille that saw Les Dogues finish 5th, it came as a huge surprise to fans everywhere when Rudi Garcia was sacked in June 2009. But after it became public that Rudi Garcia was sacked because of a difference of opinion with Xavier Thuilot, a member of the Lille board, Thuilot was himself relieved of his duties and Lille president Michel Seydoux decided to reinstate Garcia less than 3 weeks after his dismissal.

That same summer saw Rudi Garcia continue to build on his team. While many thought Lille would drop down the league after the sell of Michel Bastos (who finished the previous season with 14 goals and 9 assists), Garcia spent the money forked over by Lyon wisely. He bought Ivorian winger Gervinho, another player he held in high regard from his time at Le Mans, for a reported €8m and signed experienced goalkeeper Mickael Landreau from PSG for only €2m. Eden Hazard, Mathieu Debuchy, Yohann Cabaye, and Aurelien Chedjou all became first team regulars in the next few months and flourished under Rudi Garcia’s new system, a style that was attracting more and more interest from fans and pundits alike. That season Lille improved on their previous season and finished 4th, and with their 72 goals scored finished with the best attack in the league helped by top goalscorers Gervinho, Cabaye, and Pierre-Alain Frau (13) and top assister Hazard (8).

In the summer of 2010, despite months of rumours and uncertainty, Lille managed to hold on to their promising players such as Cabaye, Gervinho, Hazard, and Rami. Rudi Garcia acknowledged that Lille’s weakest link was their striker, and he believed to have found his man with the surprise signing of Moussa Sow on a free from Rennes. He also signed David Rozehnal from HSV, providing some cover for Rami and Chedjou. All in all, Moussa Sow was the only real addition to Lille’s first team, but it was an addition that changed everything. His 25 goals, along with Gervinho’s 17, played a crucial part in a season that saw Lille complete a domestic double, only the second double in club history and their first league win in over 55 years.

Of course with the success brought to the club by Rudi Garcia, Lille’s stars were targets for lots of European clubs. 2011 saw Lille lose important players from each section of the team; Rami went to Valencia for €6m (agreed upon in the January window), Cabaye to Newcastle for €5m, and Gervinho to Arsenal for €12m. Moussa Sow would also leave for Fenerbahce in the January window for €10m. Garcia used the money available to him to grab defender Marko Basa (another player he managed at Le Mans), playmaker Benoit Pedretti (after a splendid season with Auxerre), Dimitri Payet from St. Etienne, and Nolan Roux as a replacement for Moussa Sow in the January window, as well as bringing over Joe Cole on a season-long loan deal. Payet, though he showed glimpses of brilliance, came with a reputation for being very hit and miss, as evidenced by his 13 goals scored for St. Etienne in the 2010-2011 where 7 of them came in his first 7 matches. Rudi Garcia, despite not having the same quality of players, carried on Lille’s fluid attacking football and finished the season with 74 points, only two less than the season before. But Paris St. Germain and Montpellier made it a much more competitive season and the best Lille could manage was 3rd, after a season of struggling with life without some key players.

Unfortunately (and inevitably) for Lille, they were dealt a huge blow this summer with the sell of Eden Hazard to Chelsea, and Mathieu Debuchy’s chances of joining former team-mate Yohann Cabaye at Newcastle are looking increasingly likely. In fact, Rudi Garcia’s already planning on losing Debuchy by snapping up the promising Djibril Sidibe from Troyes. The 19-year old is coming off a very successful season that saw him reach promotion with Troyes and earn several caps for the France U19s. Lille have also grabbed goalkeeper Steeve Elana on a free transfer from Brest to rotate with Mickael Landreau. But with 20 goals and 15 assists last season, filling the void left by Eden Hazard is going to be one of Rudi Garcia’s toughest jobs to date and he’ll be hoping to do so with the signings of Marvin Martin and Salomon Kalou. While Garcia knows Martin is capable of providing the assists (17 assists in the 10-11 season), the question is can Payet, Roux, De Melo, and newboy Kalou step up with the goals?



I’m certain Rudi Garcia will keep his attacking 4-3-3 system for the upcoming season, and, as he’s always done, I expect him to give promising youngsters and squad players the chance to play more important roles in the months to come. Lucas Digne (who had an impressive second half of last season), and Jerry Vandam (who spent last season on loan at Caen) will be looking to get games in Lille’s defense. Idrissa Gueye will provide a more physical option for midfield, and Rudi Garcia is slowly starting to work him into his first eleven. And in attack, even though Lille already have a pair of solid strikers in Roux and De Melo for only one spot, expect Ronny Rodelin to be given more chances. Lille’s young talents will be desperate to show Garcia they can help Lille win back the league.

Michel Seydoux, upon rehiring Garcia in 2009, stated his ambition to turn Lille into a regular force in French football. Three seasons and three top 4 finishes later and Rudi Garcia has done everything in his power to fulfill Seydoux’s ambitions. And with their new stadium, the 50,000-seat capacity Grand Stade Lille Metropole, opening it’s gates for the upcoming season, the future is looking bright for Lille.
