The Official Azzurrini Thread - Italys future stars!
Manchester United’s Davide Petrucci is among the new faces in the Italy Under-21 squad called up by Ciro Ferrara. The Coach will hold a three-day training camp for the Azzurrini from January 16 to 18 in Rome.
It will include a friendly against Ischia Isolaverde on Wednesday.
Among the new faces in the side are Manchester United midfielder Petrucci and Vicenza starlet Davide Bariti.
More noted members include Roma striker Fabio Borini and Siena hitman Mattia Destro.
Ciro Ferrara has again lamented Serie A’s lack of faith in Italian youth, after spending a few days working with the Under-21 side this week. Current Azzurrini Coach Ferrara had the opportunity to work with his squad over the past few days in a workout that culminated in a friendly against Serie D side Ischia.
The Azzurrini won 3-0 thanks to goals from Manolo Gabbiadini, Alberto Paloschi and Insigne. Roma forward Fabio Borini missed a penalty in Wednesday’s encounter. Speaking after the match, the former Napoli and Juventus defender reiterated his view that his young players deserve more playing time in Italy’s top flight.
“Often in Italy has favoured foreigners over Italian players, even if they have been players that we could have done without. “Unfortunately our country’s clubs lacks the courage to play youngsters in the first team. However, I must admit to being reasonably happy because many of these guys are still finding space, if not in Serie A.”
Regulars under Ferrara including Alessandro Crescenzi, Giulio Donati, Fausto Rossi and Riccardo Saponara are all currently based in Serie B. Similarly, Lorenzo Insigne, Marco Capuano and Carlo Pinsoglio are all playing a part in Pescara’s promotion push in the second tier of Italian football, whilst Inter have just sent Luca Caldirola to Brescia.
“It was important to meet up with the boys for a few days,” mused Ferrara today. “It was also an opportunity to see some new players. “[Luca] Marrone and [Ciro] Immobile were absent? The Juventus midfielder [Marrone] is a very important player for me, but unfortunately he has not been playing for six months.
“By continuing in this way, with the view of European Under-21 Championship qualification, I have to look around for guys who are playing. On Immobile, I believe that no-one knows this player better than I do, so he must continue in Pescara and his opportunity, of course, will come to him.
“That being said, up front today I had four players - with the exception of Gabbiadini, who plays little - who are first-team members or at least part of squads playing in Serie A.”
Ciro Ferrara brought his young squad to a very cold Easter Road for a last friendly before they resume their qualifiers next month against Ireland. There were a number of noticeable absentees due to the rescheduling of Serie A fixtures following the tragic death of Piermario Morosini, such as Stephane El Shaarawy and Mattia Destro. However, it is fair to say that their replacements took their chance to shine, playing well in difficult conditions to run out 4-1 winners against Scotland.
Italy started the brighter, and it only took eight minutes for them to take the lead. A free kick on the left was only half-cleared by Scotland to the feet of Donati who crossed in from the right where Florenzi was able to rise above the opposing defenders and power a strong header past the keeper.
The early goal gave the team confidence, and they continued to push forward, creating three fine chances for Immobile including a one-on-one with the keeper that he perhaps should have done better with.
Scotland seemed shell-shocked by the fast start from the Azzurrini and it wasn’t until the half-hour mark that they had their first shot, a powerful low effort from distance. Though that gave Colombi little difficulty, it lifted the Scots, who for the first time began to create a bit of sustained pressure, first hitting the post from a close range shot and then, following a defensive mix-up between the otherwise excellent Verratti and Crescenzi that allowed Scotland to get in behind the defence and cross a low ball to find Mackay-Steven unmarked and able to roll the ball into an empty net. Despite this, Italy continued to press but couldn’t find another goal before the break.
Italy made three changes at half time, and also appeared to come out with a more direct attacking tactic. In the first seconds after kick off, the Azzurrini worked the ball to the left and whipped in a cross that substitute Crimi sought to meet. The Scotland substitute keeper, Adam, came out to collect and came together with Crimi, sustaining a head injury that unfortunately meant he himself had to be substituted.
Despite the delay, once the game restarted, Italy pushed forward immediately, their tactic becoming clear as Verratti and Insigne pulled the strings in midfield playing balls through the middle of a flat defence for the strikers to run on to. That soon led to Immobile being put through and sliding the ball into the far corner of the net. Five minutes later had the ball in the net again, only for it to be ruled out for a very tight offside decision.
Italy were now bossing the game, and there was time for debutant Sansone to see a 30 yard strike beat the keeper but bounce off the crossbar before Insigne made it 3-1 with a perfect free kick into the top right hand corner.
By now the game was over as a contest, and though Scotland substitute Feruz showed a couple of nice touches, there was only one team that was going to score another. Longo was the man to do so, curling in a fine effort from the left hand edge of the box in the 89th minute.
Overall it was a performance that Ferrara and his team can be very proud of, and one that bodes well for the upcoming qualifiers, especially bearing in mind the big names that were missing.

Italy's Under-21s ended their qualification campaign for the 2013 Euros with a humiliating 4-2 defeat at home to a Republic of Ireland side that ended the game with nine men. The young Italians were already through as Group winners, but were keen to preserve their unbeaten record, whereas the Irish were already out. Devis Mangia, presiding over only his second competitive games as Azzurrini boss, selected a strong side including Genoa's Ciro Immobile and Milan's Stephan El Shaarawy for the match at the Stadio Giuseppe Capozza in Casarano.
Things went badly wrong as early as the 23rd minute however, when Sean Murray caught out Italy 'keeper Mattia Perin with a sumptous lob. The hosts equalised 10 minutes later through Cesena defender Luca Caldirola, and seemed to be in complete control when Irish defender Derrick Williams was sent off and a penalty awarded shortly before half-time.
But Immobile missed the spot-kick, and remarkably, Noel King's 10 men found themselves 3-1 up inside 15 minutes of the second half, Aaron Doran and Conor Henderson both netting.
There was then a power cut which suspended play for 25 minutes, but Italy's misery was only temporarily postponed, Doran on hand to make it 4-1 in the 75th minute. There was another red card - for Ireland's Anthony Forde - and yet another power cut - before El Shaarawy scraped back a slither of respectability for Mangia's boys with a consolation goal in the dying seconds.
