Changes to Champions League rules agreed today could see Europe’s top nations having up to five teams in Uefa’s top club competition.
From 2015, the Europa League winners as well as the European champions will qualify automatically for the following season’s Champions League, Uefa sources have confirmed.
But if the Europa League is won by an English club, for example, they will not take the qualification place of a team finishing fourth in the Premiershit - as happened to Tottenham last season when Chelsea won the Champions League but finished sixth.
Were the rules in force this year, fifth-placed Tottenham would have qualifed by virtue of the fact Chelsea won the Europa League. The principle was agreed by Uefa’s executive committee today and will be formally announced at the European governing body’s Congress in London on Friday.
The move is designed to make the Europa League more attractive and to persuade clubs to take the competition more seriously.
The change to allow a maximum of five clubs also answers concerns from the European Clubs’ Association who felt that the chances of the Europa League winners taking a place away from clubs qualifying via the domestic league was unacceptably high.
In the unlikely event of two clubs from the same country winning the Champions League and Europa League and both finishing outside of the domestic qualifying places, then those teams would still qualify for the Champions League but the side finishing fourth would miss out.
Federation President Giancarlo Abete confirms a plan to “return Serie A to 18 teams as soon as possible” and send Europa League semi-finalists into the Champions League.
There have been many clubs critical of the switch to 20 sides in the Italian top flight and it’s reported cutting down could save millions as well as increase competitiveness.
“I can say we all hope to return Serie A to 18 teams as soon as possible,” the FIGC President told RaiSport.
“We are also studying a plan with UEFA to reward the Europa League semi-finalists by giving them qualification for the next season’s Champions League.”
This week Abete wrote a letter of apology to Tottenham and the England FA after seven fans were hospitalised in an anti-Semitic attack.
So far two arrests have been confirmed as Roma ultras, though it is believed the group of hooligans were united by their far right political views.
The FIGC President added that verbal insults and violent imagery around big games such as tonight’s Palermo-Catania derby should be toned down.
“The controversy may well have a positive effect in firing up their own fanbase, but at the same time it feeds the negative rapport with all the others. It creates a damaging image of Italian football, so it would be opportune to show more common sense and responsibility.”
Anything that helps Italian teams to take the Europa League can only be a good thing, so if it takes reducing the amount of teams in Serie A, even though id be against that in general, then thats what they should do.
The Europa League isn't going to just go away, neither is the way that UEFA calculate these coefficient points, so if things don't change in the attitude toward it in Italy, things are only going to get worse. Even nations like Portugal and Holland will overtake Italy the way things are going.
