I'm no guardian of no flame. I don't even know any black people personally. I do know, however, that when someone makes a monkey chant toward a person of colour that it is totally unacceptable. Something which you clearly don't agree with.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to to weed out the guilty and ONLY the guilty. Attendants stay out of the Curva. Hell, the entire Curva is pretty much martial law during a match. I remember watching an Italian documentary on Lazio's Irriducibili some years back. It just happened to be the derby when Montella trashed them. The documentary interviewed officials as they said it's almost impossible to police the Ultras. Half of them don't even pay to attend the match, they just rush the gates. Authorities said that it's impossible to A. Police the Ultras B. Keep separation to prevent clashing C. Check each individual supporter for tickets/ obstructing materials.

It's almost impossible to get away with these things at an American sporting event. Any kind of racial slur will get you ejected within 5-10 minutes of you saying it, not to mention that you'd probably get your ass kicked in the stands. Good luck getting in without a ticket.

The problem here is that the racial abuse is becoming more and more severe (apparently). I for one would disagree with that. It's always been there, it's just now that players are becoming fed up with it. For me, it's hard to understand the politics that go along with this being that I'm an American, let alone a Californian. Europe is far behind America regarding social racial intolerance.

The responsibility lies with the governing Calcio entity.

I'm not sure you need to have spent time with black people to have an opinion on racism. Anymore than you have to have killed someone to have an opinion on murder.

Any racial taunt would get you bruised and battered most likely and then thrown out in the States but I imagine it would take some time for people to even realize what you were doing. I literally can't even imagine it occurring in any major sporting event. It would be anathema.

I agree with closing the Curva. Only way to end this is to make it so painful on everyone that it's not worth it.

That said, i wish the black players would simply come out and say, "I laugh at those ignorant bastards. It doesn't bother me one bit, it makes them look foolish not me. Now if you'll excuse me i'm gonna go get in my Ferrari and fuck a few white women"

Ireland is not a homgeneous country. It is populated by Dubs, as in people from Dublin, then the rest are culchies. That translates as dirty, smelly, cousin-riding, farmers. We also have lots of immigrants, who are more than welcome.

I don't have much have much of a relationship with minorities, though, no, you are right in saying that, but I'm certain not "expressing outrage merely to let others know you are not racist". I genuinely find racism such as that witnessed in a football stadium to be repugnant and backward.

So, your view on the racism problems which exist in the Italian game is that its "something that cannot be monitored or prevented". So what do you do about it, nothing? Just tell the black players when they transfer to Italy that they'll be called a monkey and have monkey chants aimed at them whenever they touch the ball, and maybe even bananas thrown at them, but its ok, because at the end of the day you'll be paid lots. lolz.

I don't think you're a racist, Giovanni. You're a stubborn prick sometimes, but thats different. I suppose i am too. We have different views on the ongoing issues with this, and that is fine. It is a delicate topic, and its even more complicated in this situation when you take into account that a lot of times people are making these monkey chant noises they're not doing to insult the black player, but rather just to insult. Hence my comments before on why I heard the same kind of noises being made toward Cassano. Its not quite as black and white (ha) as racism is perceived in the US, for example.

I'm not sure if saying this is accurate, I could be way off the mark as I aren't too familiar with Italian society, but the issues at hand may come down to the people making these noises not actually being racist, but its more an issue of education on the matter. Maybe education isn't the correct phrase, I dunno, maybe what is acceptable and what is not? As I've said before, they seem to do it for the fun of it. Yes, they aim to insult first and foremost, but an easy way to do that is to insult the colour of one's skin.

Take the Napoli game on Sunday, for example. It wasn't a high stakes game, there wasn't really much to play for bar the win on the night, yet the Ultra's were clearly eager to insult Napoli at every opportunity due to the rivalry of the clubs. Nothing wrong with that. Every time Cavani made a mistake or shot wide, there were howls of boos. Yet when Zuniga or Armero made a mistake, there were monkey chants. Were they racist chants? Yes, clearly. Were they intended to be racist in meaning? Probably not. Either way, they aren't acceptable.
