Serie B introduces salary cap

Serie B have announced plans for a salary cap and a limit on how many players over the age of 21 a club is allowed to have.

President Andrea Abodi confirmed the news after today’s meeting of the Lega Serie B.

New contracts signed from July 2013 will have a maximum of €150,000 per season fixed wages plus up to €150,000 in performance-related bonuses. This would help clubs save up to 25% on their current expenditure.

Clubs that do not stand by these rules will be fined.

There will also be a limit on the number of players each team can have in the squad who are over 21 years of age.

From the 2013-14 season, clubs can have at most 22 players over the age of 21, while in 2014-15 that will go down to 20.

Abodi also confirmed his desire to reduce Serie B to 20 teams, but that will have to be discussed with the FIGC and Serie A.

Don't think much of having an amount set like that. Why not declare that a wage bill can't exceed whatever percentage of a club's revenue?

Also, what if big clubs like Torino and Samp get relegated again? Are they going to be forced to give up all their players immediately and not be able to get a fair price because Serie A teams know that are obliged to sell them under the rules?

The rule also has to significantly reduce the chances of Serie B clubs surviving in Serie A.

They are going to have to load up on good players as soon as they are promoted, because I can't imagine a team full of players earning next to nothing is going to have the quality to do anything in Serie A.

Might have to contact Aberdeen with this news. Suddenly teams in Serie B are going to be stuck not being allowed to pay more than Aberdeen can afford, which might just open up a new market for us.

Wonder which club will be the first one to be caught making under the table payments to its players?

It does seem like somewhat an unfair and unbalanced ruling for the bigger clubs who may be relegated, and likewise current Serie B clubs with big aspirations. Surely there must be some rules or allowances for instances like that.

Although it does say its only on new contracts signed from July 2013.

“The attitude seems conscientious, especially considering the moment of financial crisis Italy is in,” said Atalanta director general Marino.

“We ought to have a similar idea in Serie A, really. However, I am yet to understand how the clubs that are relegated into Serie B will fit in with those parameters.”

Wow, they are some finishing games. Pressure all on Verona yo win to decide their own faith, while Empoli have nothing to play for. Sassuolo-Livorno is huge, a win for either to not only secure promotion but also the Serie B honours.

Empoli do have something to play for.

If the gap between third and fourth is ten points or more, there are no playoffs and the top three are just promoted automatically.

They need a draw to be sure of forcing playoffs.
