Yeh, its a delicate balance. On the face of it, many of us fell in love with Roma because of where she is from. We fell in love with the jersey and passion of the fans and the connection to the city, and the connection the local players have. We didn't fall for her for the winning of loads of trophies and chances of glory and success. Like DCG said, the game has changed more than the club. The playing field is distorted because clubs can be bought and toyed with like real life Football Manager, and money dominates all now more than ever. No one is saying we want Roma full of 11 Romans, managed and owned by Italians and likely playing down in the Lega Pro divisions, but we don't want to lose it all, either.

I don't care for it either. Yet isn't it the managements job to create income/cash flow and hire footballing men to run the team?

The results being what they are, I didn't hear too many people complain when Baldini and the smoking man were hired.

I'm the first to say their timing on some announcements have been poor from a PR standpoint. They haven't done themselves many favors there.

Sabatini's a proven scout and I've always admired Baldini. I stick to those opinions, whatever the results.

My problems are with the board's awkward announcements about cruise holidays, and with the fact that I don't think Baldini is as independent as they let on.

I still believe that Baldini wouldn't have sacked Zeman at this stage of the season if he was left to his own devices. He might have sacked him in May, sure, but as an experienced football man, I can't see how he'd rationalise removing a coach at that juncture, given that the league and european qualification were out of reach and relegation was not going to be a problem.

Before anyone jumps in on a pro- or anti-Zeman vein, forget about the Czech. Take him out of the equation. Crisis sackings are never a good idea and it's not the kind of rash action I'd associate with Baldini. There was media pressure to sack Allegri after a poor start to this season and now they're beating Barca and Conte's saying they can still threaten for the league.

The thing is with this kind of ownership is that no amount of statements or interviews will ever make me believe that an american entrepreneur, with a history of making massive profits from high-risk investments is going to take a back seat on ANY decision just because some Italian says he knows what he's doing. It's not in that kind of person's make-up to let others take charge, whether or not they're better equipped to do so.

What point? That Zeman's tactics and antics really couldn't succeed in the top flight? Not a fan - an opportunist. I've never thought Zeman's appointment was made with any real conviction, despite what you kool-aiders still like to think. I suspect they didn't think things would go quite so badly quite so quickly, but the appointment was a cynical one. Apart from anything else, can you think of any coach further from Baldini's 'code' of respect? They thought Zeman would buy them a little groundswell of support on the ground. Which it did. For a few weeks. Zeman was the quintessential kool-aid.

The point that he didn't want to go for an italian coach who was endoctrinated in the italian way of doing things. It was Baldini's biggest complaint about serie a before taking the job.

But Baldini's choice or not, I'd say it was certainly a cynical support move on the board's part.

As an aside, all the kool-aid talk on here is getting a little tiring. You're not a fan of Zeman, fine. But there's no need to write off other fans' opinions.

Informed opinions, certainly; kool-aid is short-hand for uninformed opinion. I don't really know if you were a kool-aider or not; I do think Zeman's appointment over the summer was the quintessential kool-aid, though, and that the vast majority of those who lapped it up were true kool-aiders. There are few things more tedious than football fans (and pundits) talking with conviction about things they actually know very little about (generally it happens whenever a club makes a big signing from South America say, or the Netherlands: "oh, this kid is great; he's going to make a massive difference. I know this because he's worth a lot on Chumpionship manager and I've heard people say he's good." etc. etc. The especially informed ones will claim to have seen him at least a couple of times in the Champions League etc. etc.).

money has always directed football. where and who it comes from matters very little.

if you think about it, roma's been managed pretty well except in one aspect, the coach. the management won't be dumb enough to make the same mistake THREE times, so my prediction would be that they've realized this and will make sure that the next coach will be up to the standard that roma requires.

I actually done a pisstake mock-up of our jersey with a Micky D's logo ages ago when the rumours of a US takeover began, never thinking it would actually happen, but now I'm just not so sure.

Careful, mk. You're treading too close to pointing out to threadmund that he's only a Romanista because of globalisation and the very Roman 'terroir' he loves so much is itself a brand of sorts - one of the characteristics of globalisation is to make a fetish of the 'authenticity' of the local.
