MATCH PREVIEW Serie A Week 21 - 20 Jan 2013 (19.45 UK) Roma - Inter Stadio Olimpico
Roma's 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture at the San Siro was arguably their best performance of the season, so far.
Francesco Totti gave a master-class, as i Giallorossi ran riot. The pace and tempo at which they counter-attacked with was too much for Inter.
That showing was the blueprint for how Zdenek Zeman wants his side to play, but Roma's inability to match it on a consistent basis has left them frustrated in their challenge for a Champions League berth.
Inter recovered from that round two defeat to win eight of their next nine games, but since ending Juventus' long unbeaten run in November, they have only put together back-to-back victories once.
Both teams began 2013 with crushing defeats - Roma 4-1 at Napoli, while Inter lost 3-0 in Udine.
The Nerazzurri responded with a 2-0 win against Pescara last weekend, but they were unconvincing in their mid-week Coppa Italia victory over Bologna. Having contrived to throw away a two goal lead in the closing stages of normal time, it took a 119th minute winner from Andrea Ranocchia to seal Inter's progression.
Inter's semi-final opponents will be Sunday's opposition, Roma. The two sides will meet three times over the next two weeks. Zeman's men also required extra time to see off Fiorentina, with Mattia Destro's strike the only goal of an even contest.
Roma had both Dodo and Rodrigo Taddei dismissed, but they will be available to face Inter. Pablo Osvaldo, Maarten Stekelenburg and Simone Romagnoli are, however, all still injured, while Stefano Guberti is suspended.
For Andrea Stramaccioni, the injuries continue to mount up. Antonio Cassano and Diego Milito join an ever-growing list of casualties, that already includes Yuto Nagatomo, Luca Castellazzi, Dejan Stankovic, Ricardo Alvarez, Philippe Coutinho and Walter Samuel. Wesley Sneijder also remains unavailable, as his protracted move to Galatasaray continues to stall.
Both managers will know the importance of securing victory in the first game of the mini-series between their two sides, the outcome of which will likely determine the success of their respective seasons.
Keep an eye on: Tommaso Rocchi (Inter) The veteran striker is likely to be handed his first start for Inter in the absence of Cassano. A Lazio legend, the 35 year-old will be eager to play a starring role in defeating his former employees biggest rivals. With many questioning Inter's wisdom in signing Rocchi at this stage of his career, it is the perfect stage for him to prove the doubters wrong.
Form guide: Roma (W L W L L) Inter (W L D L W)
Last season: Roma 4-0 Inter
Stat fact: Inter have failed to score in their last three away matches in Serie A
Roma (probable): Goicoechea; Piris, Marquinho, Castan, Balzaretti; Pjanic, De Rossi, Florenzi; Lamela, Destro, Totti
Inter (probable): Handanovic; Ranocchia, Chivu, Juan Jesus; Zanetti, Guarin, Gargano, Cambiasso, Pereira; Rocchi, Palacio
There are surprise reports that Wesley Sneijder told Inter he was prepared to cut his wages after all, but President Massimo Moratti replied “it’s too late now.”
The midfielder has been frozen out for several months, as he was told he wouldn’t play for the club again until he agreed to lower his €6m per season wages.
The plan was to extend his contract by an extra year, but keeping the same overall sum, therefore spreading the money more thinly over an extended period.
Sneijder refused and was put on the market, although he continues to drag his heels over giving Galatasaray a response after they agreed a €7.5m transfer fee.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims today that Sneijder has decided he’d rather take a pay cut and stay at Inter than accept the move to Istanbul.
However, the newspaper also suggests that President Moratti told him “it’s too late now,” as the Nerazzurri are determined to sell.

Roma 1 - 1 Inter Totti pen 22 (R), Palacio 45+1 (I) Stadio Olimpico
Roma and Inter held each other up in a 1-1 draw at the Olimpico, as Rodrigo Palacio cancelled out a controversial Francesco Totti penalty.
This was a showdown for European places and prestige, not to mention a homecoming for ex-Roma youth academy Coach Andrea Stramaccioni. Both sides went to extra time this week in the Coppa Italia and will face each other again next Wednesday in the semi-final first leg.
The Nerazzurri were without a host of stars such as Antonio Cassano, Diego Milito, Walter Samuel, Philippe Coutinho, Ricky Alvarez, Dejan Stankovic and Luca Castellazzi, so Marko Livaja had his first Serie A start. Wesley Sneijder continues to be frozen out while he considers a move to Galatasaray. Francesco Totti and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo returned from injury, but Miralem Pjanic failed a fitness test after suffering from flu.
This tie last ended in a Serie A draw back in March 2006, followed by three wins each. After three minutes Osvaldo just failed to get a diving header on to Erik Lamela’s cross, then Michael Bradley couldn’t get on the end of a Totti pass across the face of goal.
Osvaldo had the ball in the back of the net after 10 minutes, but was flagged offside and it was incredibly close, a matter of inches.
The referee pointed to the spot in a contentious decision after 20 minutes. Totti’s slide-rule pass saw Bradley run through and Andrea Ranocchia’s sliding tackle was judged to be a penalty, though the American seemed to hurdle him. Totti stepped up to convert in powerful fashion, blasting it under the bar with genuine ferocity. It was the first time the captain had scored against Inter at the Olimpico in Serie A since October 2004.
A ricochet fell to Alessandro Florenzi for a volley wide from the D, while Mauro Goicoechea flapped a Ranocchia cross out for a corner. Lamela curled inches past the far top corner and Fredy Guarin blasted just off target too.
Livaja almost marked his first Serie A start with a goal, as he turned brilliantly between two defenders to control with his chest and the half-volley smacked against the outside of the post.
Moments later Totti sent Osvaldo through for an angled drive across the face of goal, then the Italian international’s daisy-cutter hit the side-netting. Juan Jesus nodded a corner just wide of the far stick.
Goicoechea flapped at another set piece and Cristian Chivu tried to bundle it over, but was denied by a crucial Federico Balzaretti goalline clearance.
It seemed to be heading into the break with Roma in front, but in stoppages Guarin showed great strength to reach the by-line and pulled back for Rodrigo Palacio to tap in from six yards.
Panagiotis Tachtsidis replaced Daniele De Rossi for the second half, but Osvaldo went clear and his touch was too heavy, allowing Samir Handanovic to take it off his foot. The goalkeeper immediately got back up to ensure Totti narrowed the angle too much.
Handanovic took the sting out of a sudden Ivan Piris snapshot and Livaja’s cheeky backheel flick was deflected for a corner. The impressive teenager Livaja drilled inches wide of the near post with the aid of a deflection, but then made way for ex-Lazio captain Tommaso Rocchi.
Osvaldo was just offside when nodding off target, saving his blushes. Balzaretti at full stretch just failed to get the extra touch as Osvaldo nodded down.
Piris ran on to a Bradley through ball, but fired wide at the near post rather than roll across for Lamela. Soon after the full-back had another great opportunity, his powerful shot skimming the crossbar.
Handanovic did well to get down and palm a dangerous Lamela strike off the line despite the fact it bounced right in front of him.
Andrea Stramaccioni was impressed with Inter’s draw with Roma considering the absentees. “It was the right result.”
The Nerazzurri were without stars like Diego Milito, Antonio Cassano, Philippe Coutinho, Walter Samuel and Ricky Alvarez for tonight’s 1-1 draw.
“Roma’s potential on home turf is huge, both because of Coach Zdenek Zeman and the quality of the players,” said Stramaccioni.
“They started out very strong and put us under real pressure in the first 20 minutes. After the break I saw a good Inter and I think the draw was the right result. We felt the absence of some of our players in attack.”
Marko Livaja received his first Serie A start and hit the woodwork, but Esteban Cambiasso was surprisingly benched.
“I opted for two midfielders who could run more, as we needed pace to challenge the Roma central midfielders. Cambiasso is an important player for us, but for this game I made other choices.
“Livaja put in a great performance and was about to score a spectacular goal.”
Stramaccioni was asked to comment on Galatasaray’s announcement they have reached an agreement with Wesley Sneijder.
“For the good of Wes and Inter, the important thing is for this soap opera to end.”
Briz, I hope in your recent post you don't mean that you will not be posting here anymore because that would be unfortunate if true. Whatever Maro says you should take with a pinch of salt. Just ignore him and stick around with your fellow Interisti.
Inter have reportedly saved themselves close to €30m after selling Wesley Sneijder to Galatasaray.
The Dutchman confirmed last night that he would be joining the Turkish outfit after being made available by the San Siro giants.
The creative midfielder, who recently rejected a request by the Nerazzurri to take a 30 per cent pay cut, has been sold for €7.5m.
The Gazzetta dello Sport says that fee will rise if certain bonus clauses are activated. Sneijder has signed until June 2016 for a €5.5m a season salary.
Had the former Real Madrid man remained at Inter until the end of his contract then he would have cost the club almost €30m gross in wages.
I'm sure a better 'numbers' article than this will be available in the coming days. Word on the street is now that we will try to sell Alvarez for close to 8mil and make one last attempt at Paulinho (at least a 15mil offer). Don't think it will be enough. We should be happy that we have just rid of Sneijder, anything else this window is a bonus.
Media over here reckon Coutinho is set to join Liverfekkin'wankscum? I thought you guys rejecting their first bid meant he wasn't for sale......guess not. I'd have kept him.
If he is joining livo, we would have cashed in and not let him go cheaply (i think we rejected 10mil initially). However, we don't seem to have balls when it comes to negotiating deals...
