Stramaccioni hails teenage Inter

Andrea Stramaccioni praised his teenage Inter side, even though they were pegged back to a 2-2 draw by Neftci.

“We did really well tonight and I have to compliment these very young lads, as it’s a sign the club is working well towards the future,” said the former Primavera Coach who won the Next Gen Series with many of these players.

“Marko Livaja has always been in our plans and he has quality, but is also very young, so must continue to work with humility.”

The Nerazzurri were already qualified for the next round of the Europa League, so fielded a group of 18-year-olds along with a few senior players.

Antonio Cassano came on for the second half, making his comeback after a two-match Serie A ban.

“Antonio is in good shape and took part in every dangerous attacking move. It is important for us to have him back and now we look towards Sunday’s game with Napoli.”

Javier Zanetti was sent to the stands and Stramaccioni joked “we had to lock him in the training ground to stop him coming on to the pitch!”

Naturally, the Coach was also asked about Wesley Sneijder, who broke the club-imposed Twitter embargo by sending a message that he was not called for this game.

“He didn’t disappoint me and it is nothing serious. There was a misunderstanding that we cleared up. I had already told him he would not be called up, but out of respect for the other players he wasn’t supposed to reveal that yet.

“Let’s say it was a semi-mistake, but not that big a deal.”

Yes Bandini had a very good last 20 mins. Hell he's much much better than Jonathan will ever be...
Best youngster on the field was Benassi for me. He seems much more mature than his age. Hope he is loaned in january or moved to the first team cause he's wasted with the Primavera.
I'm still keeping my reserve on Pereira. Surely Nagatomo is 2-3 steps ahead..

Calf problem for Sneijder

Wesley Sneijder is unlikely to be reintegrated into the Inter squad for the Napoli tie this weekend because of injury.

The Dutchman hasn’t been used in recent weeks as his contract row with the Nerazzurri continues.

However, it seems that even if boss Andrea Stramaccioni was thinking of a recall for Sunday evening, that now looks unlikely.

Sneijder didn’t train on Friday because of a calf problem which required physiotherapy.

Mrs Sneijder: 'He's not injured!'

Wesley Sneijder officially missed training with Inter due to a calf problem, but his wife Yolanthe revealed on Twitter “he’s not injured!”

The tense situation continues to escalate and it is widely reported in Italy that Sneijder is determined to force a January transfer.

He already broke the club-imposed Twitter embargo this week by announcing he was not in the squad for their Europa League game against Neftci.

On Friday an official note on the club website stated Sneijder had skipped training due to a calf problem and had physiotherapy instead.

However, on Friday evening his wife Yolanthe Cabau responded to fans on her Twitter account who were asking after Wesley’s health. “He’s not injured! Wesley is just fine.”

When supporters asked her to convince Sneijder not to abandon the ship, she replied: “Believe me, that’s not the problem... He loves Inter... We’ll see.”

The Dutch midfielder has been told he won’t play until he agrees a new contract with Inter, reducing his current €6m per season wages.

Inter leapfrogged into second place after a thrilling 2-1 win over Napoli with numerous wasted chances and decisive defensive errors.

It was third against second at San Siro in a battle to see who would be the main contenders for leaders Juventus. Wesley Sneijder was dropped again amid a contract dispute, while Esteban Cambiasso took over at centre-back for the suspended Walter Samuel. Antonio Cassano returned from his two-match ban for insulting the referee, but Ricky Alvarez, Jonathan, Gaby Mudingayi, Joel Obi, Dejan Stankovic and Cristian Chivu were injured. Napoli had a full squad to choose from, as Marek Hamsik was able to start despite suffering from flu symptoms, but Goran Pandev was only fit for the bench after a long lay-off.

PSG star Ezequiel Lavezzi was in the stands to cheer on his former teammates along with Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis. Alessandro Gamberini suffered a cut to his nose just 30 seconds in and immediately needed treatment.

Inter broke the deadlock with their first opportunity, as a Cassano corner came to the totally unmarked Fredy Guarin at the back post to volley in from six yards. The Napoli defence did not spot the Colombian’s run from behind.

Edinson Cavani went on the counter and Lorenzo Insigne curled the finish just past the far stick, then the Uruguayan also set up Hamsik to drill inches wide of the same upright.

Cassano burst into the box after a give-and-go with Diego Milito, but Miguel Angel Britos got a crucial and clean tackle to cut him off. FantAntonio was caught between Britos and Paolo Cannavaro in that move, stretchered off, but able to continue after treatment.

Cavani’s header was across the face of goal from Insigne’s lofted cross, but it was offside anyway. Cavani’s acrobatic chest and half-volley was deflected off target, but the pressure was not enough.

Instead, Inter doubled their lead as Guarin pounced on a poor clearance, threaded it through for Milito, who held off Gamberini to prod a low drive into the bottom corner despite Morgan De Sanctis getting a hand to it.

A fierce Insigne volley was over the bar just before the break, but Walter Mazzarri threw on Pandev for defender Gamberini.

Inter nearly made it 3-0, as Cassano found a gap on an Alvaro Pereira through ball and his shot cannoned off the base of the upright.

Samir Handanovic finally had a tough save to make, as Gokhan Inler hit one of his swerving specials from outside the box and his former Udinese teammate got a hand to it.

From the corner there was absolute bedlam. Handanovic denied Pandev from point-blank range, then it bounced on to the crossbar and fingertipped Christian Maggio’s follow-up off the line until Cavani eventually bundled it over.

Maggio was furious moments later when he felt he was taken down in the box by Juan Jesus, though it was only the tiniest of nudges.

Insigne pulled back for Pandev, whose shot was charged down by Cambiasso with an arm, though only after it had bounced off his leg and his back, so the referee waved play on.

Substitute Rodrigo Palacio just failed to connect with a fierce Pereira ball across the face of goal, but Napoli kept up consistent pressure and Pandev wasted a golden opportunity with a weak finish into Handanovic’s arms.

Hamsik pulled up all by himself and immediately called for a substitution. While he was still limping, Guarin played through Yuto Nagatomo and De Sanctis sprinted off his line to smother at his feet.

De Sanctis ran outside the box to start a counter-attack, which Cavani rolled across and Pereira’s completely mis-kicked clearance almost looped into his goal. Replays suggest Pereira kicked it on to his own arm.

Napoli should’ve equalised, as Cavani floated a free kick on to the head of the unmarked Maggio, but the finish was too weak to surprise Handanovic.

Juan Camilo Zuniga had to sprint back to stop 39-year-old Javier Zanetti’s strong run after he had already powered past Britos. Palacio robbed Valon Behrami in the box and dribbled back to flash a shot across the face of goal. It was wide open in the final stages, as Pandev brought it down for Cavani’s strike deflected over the bar.

Very important win. Not a great match…but still a very important 3 points. Now someone has to explain why we can get 3 pts regularly against all the big teams (Milan, Juve, Fiore & Napoli (Roma isn’t considered a big team in my records)) only to then lose them against clubs like Cagliari, Parma & Atalanta…

Totally agree ... its a strong solid mf that we are lacking. It was a mistake not to retain Poli this summer. It was another mistake not to try and do our utmost to try and bring Paulinho to San Siro. To add insult to injury Obi and Stankovic have always been injured and we have ended up fielding the same mf week after week. The January transfer window comes just in time. The good thing is that the season is still very much open on all fronts. Strama has done his job up till now ... let us all hope the management (Branca in this case) do theirs now!!
