Well put. Bradley's an excellent squad player, and I'd be happy to see him doing the work in a midfield with two more technically gifted players. I decided against mentioning Florenzi last night because I didn't wanna be harsh on a guy who's been excellent. But since you rightly point to him, I'll suggest that imo Balz looked the poorer for having him in front of him on the night. Bradley was dependable enough in front of Piris and didn't leave him exposed to criticism when the young FB came forward. Florenzi drifted at times, I thought, and you just can't do that with Zeman's football.
I think an integral part of this style of play is a reliable midfield. Tachtsidis has been taking a lot of heat for being the weak link, and though I think a lot has been unfair (as in, based on an unrealistic expectation from a young player rather than being incorrect), he has certainly been a source of opportunity for the opposition. And he was booed at the start, yeah. Florenzi was similar last night, but he's young and he tried. And the only man I remember passing sideways right into the onrushing attacker was Bradley, which is why I singled him out. If I were marking the zones of the pitch (out of 5), it'd be defence 3.5, midfield 3, attack 5.
Like you, DC, I don't want to be interpreted as criticising the players overall. Only remarking on one game. I love the look of Florenzi, and am happy to see how both Bradley and Tachtsidis work out. I think the American can do well for us, and possibly even be some part of a winning side, in the same way someone like John O'Shea was integral in his own weird way to Man Utd's success over the last 10 years. Sometimes a side just needs a bit of graft, and Bradley might provide it.
I don't follow or know of Katie Parla. I should check her out, yeah?
Does anyone know wtf happened to the official Serie A app? Mine doesn't work. Anyone with a good alternative?
Ha, I'll never get sick of poking fun at the Premiershit. I do hate it. And fun fact for the day, this weekend gone there were 34 goals scored in Serie A, with only 16 goals in the EPL. Thats more than twice as many, you know...
Excellent game last night indeed. Well worth another watch (have it recorded, but also high quality download in MM thread). I was most impressed with how we defended as a team throughout the game. Of course, our attacking play was menacing as always – but that is usually a given – but I was impressed with how we coped after going ahead. We managed to press them down high up the pitch, not giving them much time to try build an attack, we looked organised and everyone played their roles well, and I don't think we dropped off the pace or intensity or slackened like we've seen so often this season. That was aided, of course, by Palermo looking pretty poor and not able to get the ball forward to Miccoli at all, but nevertheless we done overall defending as a team.
I thought Piris was imperial throughout. A really solid game defensively, nothing was getting by him, and he pushed forward well. Balza was solid as well, if looking a little sluggish, but I'll cut him some slack as he's only returning from injury. He's had a few niggling injuries lately so hopefully he can get a run of clean health and build some form.
Was also impressed with Goicoechea, even if didn't really have much to do. I agree that he looked more in command of his area and was a bigger 'presence' the defence that Stek has shown. I think Stek will struggle to reclaim the position, Zeman seems to have a liking for Goicoechea and I think he'll be in goal for the derby.
On Bradley, he's a useful player, no doubt, and he's hard not to like. Most grafters are like that, they'll run all day for you and put in the tackles, and so are often fan favourites. But like I said when we signed him, he'll be a good squad player, a good player to bring off the bench when defending a lead, but he's not technically very gifted and not a starter when everyone's fit and in form.
I don't know. It could be either, but I think DDR's style would suggest it was Destro. It was certainly my reaction.
The place exploded when he scored, but he really should have known better. Stupid rule? yes. But it's a rule, none the less. I've been defending him, but now he's marked his card as a bit of an idiot. He'll have to work hard to shake that off.
Bradley and Florenzi are the two most natural mezz'ale / interni at the club. Let's hope De Rossi and Pjanic can also learn to interpret the role in a Zeman-approved manner.
Hard to draw too much by way of conclusions from that game due to how poor a team Palermo are at the moment.
Thought the main difference to Roma's previous games was that the forwards worked better (not necessarily harder) when pressing, which meant the midfield didn't feel the need to try and step up the pitch to press in place of the forwards.
The midfield, therefore, was able to stay back in a sensible position in front of the defence so the huge gaps of never appeared in the way they have in some of Roma's previous games.
Totti is still great. I stopped watching when he was subbed.
The huge gap appeared once - in the first half when the ball was played in behind the right back. Or perhaps it was in the second half. Anyway, the ball was played in behind Piris, or whoever was filling in, and it took a year before the midfield came gallumping back into the box, at least five yards behind the Palermo players they were nominally tracking. That was the one marker of the tactical vulnerability of this side.
And Lamela owes Gasperini a beer for setting Palermo up to make Lamela look good. The kid did well, but he was given four paddocks and half of the neighbours' farm to gambol in.
DDR left training early today because of a stomach bug, but he should hopefully be ok for Sunday.
Stekelenburg, Osvaldo, Tachtsidis, Lobont, Perrotta and Piris all also didn't train. Osvaldo (sore right foot) and Piris (left adductor strain) were attending a physio session.
------------
'Derby doubts Zeman', this says. Totti, Lamela and Osvaldo are all set up front, as long as Osvaldo recovers in time, especially since Nico Lopez suffered a muscle strain. Even Tallo is injured.
DDR in competition with Bradley for a place, but surely DDR will start if fit. Florenzi will hopefully play too, and Tachtsidis, so Pjanic likley to miss out again (could possibly be used as an emergency forward if needed?). Between Castan/Burdisso and Balzaretti/Dodo at the back.

Osvaldo test results on his ankle are good, he should be ok for the derby, which is a relief. Piris and Nico Lopez also returned to training and should be ok.
I'm pissed though cos I'm going to miss the derby, I'm away to Germany tomorrow for the weekend on a stag party, not back till Sunday night. Doubt I'll catch it over there, will have to record it.
What part of Germany, Edzo? If it's Munich, you'll see it for sure. There's a tonne of italians there. It'd be a nice way to spend a very hungover afternoon ...
Cologne. Although we're flying to and from Dusseldorf, and train-ing it to Cologne. We go back on the Sunday night so the plan is get the train to Dusseldorf Sunday afternoon and spend the day on the lash there. You never know, we may be in a sports bar or something.

Zeman punta su De Rossi, il nostro vanto in campo / Giovedì 08 Novembre 2012 / 08:07 / DANIELE GALLI
Silenzio. Silenzio assoluto.
Fancy Roma to create chances because Lulic isn't good defensively, so Lamela should be dangerous, and Konko isn't the brightest, so Totti should be able to drift off him to find space.
That said, I like Lazio's midfield, so I expect Roma to have to work to open up space. The Lazio midfield knows how to position itself to prevent the game being too open or being played at a higher tempo than Lazio would want it to be.
If Lamela and Totti play as forwards, I could see there being a danger of Roma being dominated in the midfield, because Lazio - in addition to their main three - will tend to have at least one winger in there at any given time as well, which should give them an advantage and allow them to control quite a lot of the game.
The other side of that is there should be space for Roma's fullbacks to get the ball and drive forward if their midfield three can impose itself enough to get the ball out to them when Lazio are flooding the middle of the pitch.
That is of course assuming both sides actually go and decide to play each other and try to impose their own style on things, rather than one team (or both teams) deciding to drop off, allow the other side the ball and just focus on playing on the break.
Should be interesting and all things point to there being goals, so it'll probably be 0-0.
