Insigne: Cassano? No, The Waterboy!

Lorenzo Insigne insists he’s not aiming to replace Antonio Cassano in the Italian national team. “Alessandro The Waterboy is my idol.”

The Napoli youngster has been included in the full Italy squad for the first time at the expense of the Inter forward.

“I’m not like Antonio,” the Under-21 international stated from the Azzurri’s Coverciano training base on Monday. “He is a champion, while I am a young player who has it all to prove.

“He’s a really strong player, but I don’t aspire to be like him. I look up to [Juventus idol] The Waterboy. As a kid I watched all of his goals and I’d love to ‘steal’ his curling shots.”

Insigne caught the eye in Italy last season during a loan spell with Pescara in Serie B under the tutelage of Zdenek Zeman. He then returned to parent club Napoli.

“I think I did well with Zeman last year and then again with Napoli in pre-season. If I’m here then I will have to thank Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri.

“They are two very different Coaches as you can see from the style of their teams. I was used more as a wide attacker by Zeman, but with Mazzarri I’m fielded as a second striker.

“I spoke with Napoli before pre-season. I knew that I would be on trial in the sense that I didn’t know whether I would remain. I worked hard every day in the hope that I would realise my dream of staying.”

Insigne was confirmed in the Italy squad on Sunday, although his omission from Devis Mangia’s Under-21 party on Thursday suggested that the forward would be included by Prandelli.

“I didn’t expect it,” he continued. “I didn’t believe it when I was told that I was in. I then went home, turned the TV on and understood that it was all true.

“Saying that, I did think it was odd that I wasn’t called up by Mangia for the Under-21s…”

Not a good outing by a mostly B side Napoli losing 3-0. Not the same without Cavani out there to save the day.

This squads starting 11 is quite good but it's second teamers are like that of a mid table club.

Which is why Mazzarri should be sensible and rotate the squad.

Not just change the whole team for certain matches.

Yeh, Napoli don't have much strength in depth. Thats why I can't really see them challenging for the scudetto, especially over an improved Juventus team (although I hope I'm wrong). They did bring in a few decent players in the summer but they were mostly as replacements for those leaving, and overall I don't think they are stronger than they were last season.

I think Napoli have enough depth to win the title, provided they are lucky with injuries like Juve were lest season.

Beyond their starting XI, they do have half a dozen or so players who are good enough to do okay when surrounded by good players (Gamberini/Britos, Aronica, Mesto, Dzemaili, Dossena, Insigne, Vargas), but they aren't of a level that you can put out an entire Napoli reserve team and them expect to win.

I don't think their strongest side has improved since last season, but they do have a better squad this time round.

They really did have next to no squad depth last season.

Napoli face betting probe

Napoli could be docked points and a number of their players banned as part of the Italian Football Federation’s next stage of their betting probe.

The club have come under the spotlight after former goalkeeper Matteo Gianello was accused of attempting to fix the outcome of a game at Sampdoria in 2010.

Although Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava rejected Gianello’s requests to help fix the match, the pair could be punished for failing to report the incident.

Juventus boss Antonio Conte is currently serving a suspension for failing to report knowledge of a bid to fix a Siena game while he was Coach in Tuscany.

Napoli, as the club involved, have been deferred along with Grava and Cannavaro. The Azzurri could be fined or even docked points.

I now look to Serie A to get my laughs for the week. The integrity of the game is so bad and it's borderline disgusting to see players influence a referee. This is not only Juves fault but the fault of the league for not installing instand replay. How long does it take to review that? 30 seconds at most? Stop the clock or add injury time. The integrity of the Italian game is so terrible, that terrible is an understatement! It's disgusting, completely disgusting.
