grasso, I certainly an understand your displeasure. As a Roma fan I view Totti much differently than the rest of the players. First, he is certainly the finest player ever to put on the uniform and the fact that he is Roman seals his place as Roma's greatest ever player. He is the best I have ever seen at Roma in my lifetime.

He is the symbol of the the club, the city and the fans. As far as favorite players go, there is Totti and then there is everyone else. Totti is Totti. He has a higher status in Rome and he is more than a player. He is probably everyone's favorite but that does an injustice to some of our other players. What I am trying to say is that Totti is in a different category from a Roman's point of view. It's like saying Caesar was the greatest Emperor. There were other great rulers of Roma, but Caesar is Caesar. I hold no player in God-like status but I guess that is what I am trying to say about Totti. Do you all undertand.

Please indulge me. It's like saying that the Apostles of Jesus were in the same category as Jesus. Peter was great, but he is in a different category so you simply cannot make the comparison. This is how a Roma fan views Totti. It is certainly how I viewed Ago Di Bartolomei, and he was not as talented as Totti or even his contemporary Bruno Conti. But he was held in the higher esteem although I wish Totti had Ago's humility and virtues. I wish he had Bruno Conti's dispostion. But in death, Ago became even more revered and he is viewed as a God himself. Or a prophet at least.

The last time Romans took torches to the streets was when Ago was sent to Milan. I can tell you as one of those fans and both Dino Viola that fuck Nils Liedholm were marked for death. Then the treatment of Ago after he retired was unforgivable which is why I damn Dino Viola in his grave and I wish a long and painful death for Liedholm.

sorry about the "Di Ba" stuff then, i just go by what i read in articles. you think you can tell us about how he played like?? any similarities to players, just makes it easier for me (at least) to understand what an awesome player he was (dedication aside). can you also tell me of how glorious our squad was back in the 80s??

I've only glanced through this thread until now.

As I've mentioned before, living in the UK, we did well to see any tv coverage at all of il calcio in pre-satellite/cable tv days. When we did get something of Roma, it was a rare treat for me. I depended mostly on getting newspapers from the local Italian delis like Giannini, Fazzi, Da Prato, or Capaldi for my information.

There were AM radio broadcasts, certainly, but they drifted in and out most irritatingly due to atmospherics. Often I'd lose large portions of a game through adverse "skip" conditions...

Anyway, my point is simply that as far as I can recall, the nick DiBa was more from Di Bartolomei's days at Milan than at Roma. I think it was as much of a media generated title as anything else...

My somewhat patchy sources of info in those days didn't give much attention to those sorts of details. Up until the late 1980's, communications in the average home were really bloody primitive, looking back! Satellite tv until 1989 in Britain was a toy of the rich and even then only an odd few as not only did you need a huge 3 mtr or more dish, you needed a place to put it and not before you'd got planning permission from the local council...
