Lazio have confirmed that Antonio Candreva will continue to be a part of their plans for the 2012-13 campaign.
The 25-year-old, owned by Udinese, joined the capital club in January on a temporary basis after spending the first part of the season on loan at Cesena.
The Stadio Olimpico outfit have today confirmed on their website that the versatile midfielder has had his loan renewed, with an option to buy 50 per cent of him next summer.
Candreva, an Italian international with a past at Juventus and Parma, scored three goals in 15 League games for the Biancocelesti last season.
Lazio have been granted a reprieve with the news that Modibo Diakite’s suspected leg break is only severe bruising.
The defender, who suffered a fractured tibia that ruled him out of the entire 2008-09 campaign, caused concern this weekend after he sustained a blow to his left leg during a Saturday workout against Montebelluna.
It was suspected that he had again broken his leg, but tests undergone today back in Rome revealed that no fracture had been incurred. However, a build-up of fluid has been detected, so the player has been advised to rest for three weeks so as to allow a full recovery.
It is the second injury blow to have hit new Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s pre-season preparations with the Aquile, after summer signing Ederson’s knee injury sustained last week.
Lazio were surprisingly beaten 1-0 by Siena in a pre-season friendly, as Marcelo Larrondo got the winning goal.
The Biancocelesti are still looking for their form under new Coach Vladimir Petkovic and fell in their first real test of the summer.
Daniele Mannini went close, while Hernanes and Gonzalez tested the goalkeeper.
However, just before half-time Gaetano D’Agostino’s through ball allowed Larrondo to chip Federico Marchetti.
In the second half Lorik Cana moved from midfield to central defence and the chances kept coming with D’Agostino’s free kick, a Mauro Zarate effort wide and Antonio Candreva cracking his shot against the post.
Abdoullay Konko also hit the crossbar in stoppages, but Lazio paid the price for not taking their chances.
Mauro Zarate has declared that he intends to stay with Lazio for the new season, but not alongside signing a new contract.
The Argentine spent last year on loan with Inter after a falling out with previous Aquile Coach Edy Reja,
However, after failing to secure a permanent switch to San Siro and back training with Lazio this summer under Vladimir Petkovic, the player looks set to stay.
“I will stay at Lazio 100 per cent and repay the love of the fans on the field,” the forward reportedly told calciomercato.it today.
However, one issue to this declaration could come in form of the player’s confirmation that he won’t sign a new deal.
“Would I spread my wage over more years, though? My contract will stay as it is.”
Lazio have reportedly been keen to re-negotiate Zarate’s current deal, so as to spread his current earnings over an extra year, to bring his annual salary down to a more comparative level with his teammates.
The Europa League Play-off round draw has taken place today and pits Inter against Vaslui and Lazio against Mura 05.
Inter qualified for this round after narrowly overcoming Hajduk Split in the third qualifying round last night. Lazio automatically enter the Play-off round after finishing fourth in last season’s Serie A campaign.
In a faster draw process, the 62 teams in the pot were already assigned into groups of five seeded or unseeded clubs. Seeded groups were then each paired with unseeded groups. Today’s draw determined which seeded and unseeded teams from each group would then face each other in this Play-off round.
Inter will face Romanian side Vaslui, with the first leg to be played at the Liga I runners-up’s home, whilst Lazio are up against Slovenian outfit Mura 05, with the first leg to be played in Rome.
The Nerazzurri’s opponents Vaslui faced Lazio in last season’s Europa League and held them to two draws in the group stages. Mura 05, meanwhile, have already played three qualifying rounds to get to this stage.
That run includes defeating CSKA Sofia in the Second qualifying round and beating Arsenal Kyiv in the Third qualifying round thanks in part to a 3-0 win awarded in the first leg by UEFA, after the Ukrainians were deemed to have fielded an ineligible player.
The ties will be played on August 23 and August 30. The 31 winners will then enter the group stage draw of the competition, alongside 10 losers from the Champions League Play-off round and seven automatically qualified clubs. This latter group includes last season’s competitions winners Atletico Madrid and Italian representatives Napoli.
Lazio Coach Vladimir Petkovic insists his team are “improving” after a disastrous pre-season spell. “The important thing is to play attacking football.”
The Biancocelesti were jeered off the field by their own fans in the Stadio Olimpico debut, a 1-0 defeat to Getafe, which followed on from losses against Siena and Torino.
They’ll have a final friendly against Malmoe on Thursday before the crucial Europa League play-offs with Mura.
“We are not 100 per cent yet and we couldn’t possibly be, but we are improving,” Petkovic told Lazio Style Radio on his 49th birthday.
“In the last few days the lads eliminated a few toxins from their muscles and we’ll see the results starting from tomorrow.”
Read our blog from Scott Fleming on the pressure building at Petkovic’s Lazio.
“Tactically I am working on the 4-2-3-1 and the 4-3-3, so for now we will continue along this path. When we have recovered everyone – I am thinking of players like Stefan Radu and Ederson – we’ll see how to move. We also won’t forget the market, which is open until August 31.
“We are missing a few options for a diamond midfield, although I won’t exclude it for the future.
“The important thing is to play attacking football, trying to always push four or five men up when going forward.”
Lazio President Claudio Lotito hit back at criticism of their transfer strategy, denied Hernanes and Mauro Zarate are on the market, but “we will sign someone in defence.”
There were reports Hernanes was heading towards Milan, while today Zarate was linked with a Galatasaray bid.
“It would be very easy to work on the market during an economic crisis, as all we’d need to do would be sell a few champions, but we decided differently,” he told Lalaziosiamonoi.
“We are Lazio and we keep our best players. Look at Hernanes, who is wanted by half the world, but we are keeping him.
“Unfortunately lately the trend is to praise the transfer strategy of those who do worse than us in Serie A and need to sell their big stars in order to buy reinforcements.
“We are working to give Vladimir Petkovic a squad up to the task in every area. As of today the midfield is in good shape and the attack complete, though Pasquale Foggia, Juan Pablo Carrizo and a few others need to be placed elsewhere.
“There is still time in the transfer window and we are looking at the defence. Andreas Granqvist might not be out of the question, while we spoke to Modibo Diakitè and his wage requests are high. We’ll see.
“Zarate to Galatasaray? It’s all rubbish. I have not spoken to anyone for Zarate.”
Vladimir Petkovic enjoyed his Serie A debut and noted Lazio are “close to the image I have of my team.”
The Biancocelesti earned a 1-0 victory over Atalanta in Bergamo this evening thanks to a Hernanes counter-attack.
“I was trying to push these emotions away, as it’s important to keep our feet on the ground and carry on working,” he said of his nerves at the first top flight appearance.
“Seeing everything we’ve done in the last six weeks, I expected something more so far this summer.
“The team fought hard, suffered and created, so I think we were a real team today. It is getting close to the image I have of my team.
“I saw Lazio suffering in the first 20 minutes, as we knew Atalanta would be fired up in front of their home crowd.
“We also needed to shake off the Europa League game played on Thursday, but we created many scoring opportunities and were generally in control.
“At the end Atalanta were raining long balls into the box, but overall Lazio deserved the win.”
Petkovic had been heavily criticised in the media over the summer due to friendly defeats, leading some to bet he’d be the first Serie A Coach sacked.
“I have followed Italian football, so I know that at the end of the day it’s part of this sport and sometimes we have to put up with it.”
Miroslav Klose’s brace and an Antonio Candreva blockbuster maintained Lazio’s perfect record to crush Palermo.
Vladimir Petkovic was under so much pressure in pre-season, but hoped to maintain his 100 per cent record in competitive matches. Giuseppe Sannino, on the other hand, was smarting after a 3-0 home defeat to Napoli and was without Eran Zahavi, Andrea Mantovani and Franco Brienza. Miroslav Klose passed a fitness test on his back to start.
Palermo’s last victory in Rome was in May 2008. Cristian Ledesma fired wide from distance and Senad Lulic did well to put Nicolas Bertolo off as he ran on to a long ball into the box.
A deflected Fabrizio Miccoli set play went off target and Luigi Giorgi performed a crucial block on Hernanes at the edge of the box.
Lazio thought they had scored on 32 minutes when Abdoullay Konko toe-poked it past Samir Ujkani from a set play, but Mauro Cetto got back in time for a goalline clearance.
The Biancocelesti did break through soon after with Klose’s first goal since February. The Palermo defence combined with chaotic clearances to keep the ball in the box and Alvaro Gonzalez lobbed it back in for Klose’s low volley from six yards.
The heavens opened at half-time with heavy rain over the Stadio Olimpico. Straight after the restart there was more chaos from a Lazio corner, as Ujkani wildly flapped at a diving Giuseppe Biava header and somehow the ball was cleared.
Antonio Candreva doubled the Biancocelesti’s lead with a sensational solo effort. He gathered from 20 metres, cut in on to his right foot and unleashed an unstoppable rocket into the far top corner.
Paulo Dybala made his Serie A debut after Instituto finally provided the international transfer. He combined with Josip Ilicic to wreak havoc in the Lazio box, but they managed to scramble the ball away.
However, Klose put the final word on the three points with his second goal of the game. The German chested down a Lulic cross and slipped his shot past the on-rushing goalkeeper after Steve Von Bergen failed to cut out the assist.
Mauro Zarate has rejected a move to Turkey and is committed to Lazio. “These are his people and he wants to repay them,” said his agent.
The striker had left last season for a year-long loan spell at Inter following a bitter row with then-Coach Edy Reja.
Now that Vladimir Petkovic is in charge, the Argentine has returned and is eager to win back the supporters.
“Maurito returned to Lazio and the unconditional affection of the fans. These are his people and he wants to repay them,” said agent Luis Ruzzi.
“His teammates also care for him, as shown by the collective embrace after he scored against FK Mura.”
There had been strong reports in recent weeks that Turkish sides Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce had all made offers, but Zarate turned them down.
“He is happy here, this is his team and the Laziali are his people. The past is behind him now. He has settled into this new reality with a Coach who is a great person and rewards the most worthy.
“Mauro is pleased with the kind words Petkovic said about him. The only truth is that since Zarate has come back to Rome, he wants nothing more than to do his talking on the field.
“He’s waiting for his turn to prove he was and is a talent of Argentine football, not to mention a valuable addition to this squad. Any target is possible.”
Hernanes was inspirational for Lazio, scoring two great individual goals and creating another in the 3-1 hammering of Chievo for a record-setting third straight win.
Vladimir Petkovic becomes only the second Lazio Coach ever to start a season with three consecutive victories, achieved by the legendary Tommaso Maestrelli in 1974-75. The Biancocelesti have now won seven of their last eight trips to the Bentegodi.
Senad Lulic was only fit for the bech with Stefan Radu, Cristian Brocchi and Modibo Diakite sidelined, so Pedro Luis Cavanda had a rare start in defence. Chievo picked Jokic rather than Nicolas Frey and Alberto Paloschi remained on the treatment table.
In the opening 20 seconds Luciano almost got on the end of a flick-on, but Federico Marchetti managed to get control of it.
However, it was Lazio who broke through with a fantastic solo effort. Hernanes gathered in midfield and rode two challenges with the referee playing the advantage until he unleashed a long-range left-foot strike that bounced just in front of Stefano Sorrentino, ricocheting in off the inside of the post.
That was the first goal Chievo have conceded on home turf in over 500 minutes of football. Giuseppe Biava needed a clean tackle to stop David Di Michele in the box, while Miroslav Klose pulled back for Antonio Candreva’s charged down shot.
Chievo went close to an equaliser as Perparim Hetemaj’s right-foot strike skimmed the base of the upright.
They should’ve drawn level on 35 minutes when a double defensive howler from Biava and Andre Dias sent Di Michele clear on goal, but Federico Marchetti came flying out to parry the volley from point-blank range. Both defenders had nodded the ball back into their own penalty area.
Lazio survived that scare and doubled their advantage moments later. Hernanes left the Chievo players for dead with a wonderful turn in midfield and, when Sorrentino beat away his finish with an outstretched foot, Klose was ready to tap in the rebound.
Marchetti was at full stretch to flap a dangerous free kick off the feet of Cyril Thereau just before half-time.
Di Michele blasted over from distance on the half-volley, but Chievo were uninspired and threw on Marco Rigoni and Davide Moscardelli. Thereau dived for a free kick, but his head only skimmed the ball by inches. From the resulting corner, Bostjan Cesar was held back by Stefano Mauri as he too couldn’t quite steer it in from six yards.
Substitute Moscardelli went incredibly close, as a lucky bobble after springing the offside trap left him clear, but the angled drive scraped a coat of paint off the base of the far post.
Once again, Lazio punished Chievo for wasting an opportunity and did it in style. Hernanes was clearly having a great afternoon in Verona and went on am anazing run down the left flank, holding off Luca Rigoni until he got to the by-line and squeezed the finish across Sorrentino at the near post from the tightest of angles.
There was also time to give summer signing Ederson his Serie A debut for Lazio.
Chievo did get a chance to make it a less humiliating scoreline in the final minutes when the referee awarded a penalty for Klose’s shirt-tugging on Gennaro Sardo. Sergio Pellissier stepped up and coolly sent Marchetti the wrong way. It was the first Serie A goal Lazio have conceded this season.
Luciano had another penalty appeal for his shoulder-to-shoulder with Cavanda, but the referee was right to wave play on.
Good effort from Lazio and they probably just about deserved the draw.
Took them a while to get to grips with just how athletic Spurs are, but by and large did a good job of keeping things compact and denying Spurs players the space to start running with the ball.
They got the breaks with the officiating, but it looked to me like the decisions were all technically correct - even if I probably wouldn't have disallowed the goal from the corner.
Hernanes was disappointing and was the main reason Lazio weren't able to impose themselves on the game more, though they still created several good situations through the game, even if they didn't convert many of those good situations into chances.
Never thought Lulic was a LB, and he struggled badly against Lennon. I like Lulic a lot at LM, but seems odd to play him deeper to limit his attacking impact and expose his defensive limitations.
Seen a replay on TV, i could hear a little bit of it toward the end, just after when Dafoe and Dias clashed in front of the goatfuckers fans.
I dont expect anything else from the brainless, idiotic culture fucked inbred laziale, but I have to say looking at this Guardian report it may be going over the top, particularly the headline: "Tottenham held at home in match marred by 'racist taunts' "
Not a great game, but a good result for Lazio. I thought they were gonna sneak it at the end. Hernanes was disappointing, although people probably expect him to be great now in every game.
