Andrea Stramaccioni admits he is still “protected” by President Massimo Moratti in the chaos of Inter as he prepares for the Europa League preliminary round.
The Coach was promoted from the Primavera youth team four months ago and the caretaker was surprisingly given the opportunity to begin a full season.
“I am still trying to understand the situation and am learning something, but it’s difficult to explain what it’s like to be in charge of a side like Inter,” he told Il Giornale newspaper.
“The step up from Primavera to senior squad is a chasm. It’s a whole other world, but it is nice to feel protected by President Moratti and I realise this is an advantage not many have had in the past.”
Nicknamed the ‘Italian Andre Villas Boas,’ the 36-year-old tactician had never been at the helm of a senior side before.
He was propelled into the spotlight after Claudio Ranieri’s dismissal and is now preparing for his European debut against Hajduk Split on Thursday.
“I talked with the President right from my first day at the Primavera side. He wanted to know about the training schedule, the players and even the smaller details. Now we discuss things and share our ideas, which I consider to be a fundamental change in our rapport.
“When did I wonder if I’d be confirmed on the bench? I asked myself the question for the first time after Parma-Inter in Week 36, a defeat that practically put us out of the Champions League race. It was going badly and there were no more untouchables, so I could see everything being turned upside down and wasn’t sure what to say in my Press conference.
“It was the President who calmed me down and called to say we didn’t deserve to lose and did well anyway. We were out of the Champions League places. I don’t know how many Presidents would’ve reacted that way.
“I am training myself to get used to the precarious nature of being a Serie A Coach. I feel happy on the field, as it’s my home, but off it is another matter. I am always perplexed by how rapidly people and teams are judged.”
There are big changes afoot at San Siro, as Lucio and Diego Forlan had their contracts terminated by mutual consent, while Andrea Poli and Mauro Zarate’s loans were not made permanent.
“When I arrived, Poli was considered to be a part of the team. Then when the time came to finalise a deal that seemed simple, it all got more complicated. It was purely an issue of money,” explained Stramaccioni.
Sulley Muntari went to Milan, while Julio Cesar, Giampaolo Pazzini, Douglas Maicon and Andrea Ranocchia are all expected to leave Inter too.
“Players still have that hunger to play at high levels and I cannot criticise that. The rest of what I think, I will keep that to myself.”
Stramaccioni faces a very early start to his campaign, as the Nerazzurri take on Hajduk Split tomorrow in the first leg of the Europa League preliminary round.
“We arrive in Split prepared both mentally and physically. Admittedly, August 2 is a strange date for Italian football to play an official match.”
Julio Cesar’s agent confirms “Tottenham and Roma are interested,” but he rules out the idea of a contract termination with Inter.
The goalkeeper is no longer in the San Siro side’s plans and was left off their squad list for the Europa League qualifier against Hajduk Split.
“My client is an Inter player and will remain as such unless we find another solution,” his agent told Tuttosport.
“I can rule out a termination by mutual consent, as it would not suit either party.
“There is interest from Roma, but in the last few hours Tottenham have really pushed their way to the front.
“However, in order to sign him, Tottenham will first half to present the right offer to both Inter and to us.”
There were quotes circulating yesterday from Julio Cesar suggesting his time with the Nerazzurri was over, but the Brazilian later clarified they came from a fake Facebook account.
2 important news today. The Chinese are in Milan to talk with Moratti....and Ranocchia is in deep shit for the calcioscomesse issue.....Ranocchia is definately a lucky guy..
Apart from the stadium, what does all this mean for the club? ---------------------------------- Press release: Internazionale Holding S.r.l Wednesday, 01 August 2012 22:47
MILAN, 1 August 2012 - Internazionale Holding S.r.l. announces that today it has reached an agreement which envisages the acquisition of a stake in F.C. Internazionale S.p.A. by a group of Chinese investors. The Moratti Family will keep the control of the Company while the group of Chinese investors will became the second largest shareholder.
At the same time China Railway 15th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a company controlled by China Railway Construction Corporation, and F.C. Internazionale S.p.A. have started a joint effort for the construction of a new proprietary stadium expected to be completed by 2017. In the upcoming months the parties will jointly select the potentially suitable locations, define the project team and start the filing process to obtain the required authorizations.
To ensure that the new investors are fairly represented in the Company governance, Ms Kamchi Li, Mr Kenneth Huang and Mr Fabrizio Rindi will become members of the board of directors starting from next October.
F.C. Internazionale welcomes the new shareholders and is proud to give start to this new phase of the corporate life of the club, aimed at expanding its presence in the Asian markets to raise new resources for the enhancement of its international future development and winning perspectives.
Internazionale Holding S.r.l. and F.C. Internazionale S.p.A. have been assisted by Four Partners Advisory SIM S.p.A. and Lazard & Co. S.r.l. as financial advisers and by Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP as legal adviser.
The counterparty and China Railway 15th Bureau Group Co., Ltd. have been assisted by Gallipos AG and UBS AG as financial advisers and by Studio Legale Associato Negri-Clementi as legal adviser.
Difficult to say now what this agreement really means. Certainly the club gets an injection of fresh money which will help iur balances. They want our stadium to hold their name as a sponsor. I'm not too sure what the rest of the terms are. I beleive there are also agreements which are not related ti Inter, but to Saras. Hope this agreement doesn't bite us in the ass in the future..
The China Railway Construction Corporation are new minority shareholders in Inter and will help the club build a new stadium.
The Nerazzurri confirmed the sale of shares to the Chinese group via a statement released on their website, detailing that whilst President Massimo Moratti remains as the majority shareholder in the club, China Railway Construction Corporation are now second largest shareholders.
Their arrival looks to have a specific purpose, with the immediate announcement of plans to build a new stadium for the club inside five years.
“Internazionale Holding S.r.l. announce today that it has reached an agreement that provides for the entry of a group of Chinese investors of capital in FC Internazionale Milano SpA,” read the posting on Inter’s official site.
“The Moratti family will continue to maintain control of the company, while the Chinese investors will become the second largest shareholder.
“At the same time, China Railway 15th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation, and FC Internazionale Milan SpA have teamed up to build a new stadium by 2017.
“In the coming months by mutual agreement areas to potentially involve will be identified and the necessary procedures for permission will be started.
“To ensure adequate representation of the new shareholders, joining the Board of Directors of FC Internazionale Milano SpA, starting from October, are Kamchi Li, Kenneth Huang and Fabrizio Rindi.”
Construction on the new ground, to replace the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, are believed set to begin within three years.
The arrival of this investment is being seen as another step by the club towards complying with Financial Fair Play.
“I am extremely happy with this agreement, because the new stadium was a project I have had in mind for some time and now it can become something concrete,” commented Moratti upon announcement of the news.
Inter made short work of Hajduk Split with a commanding 3-0 Europa League qualifier first leg victory in Croatia, including a Philippe Coutinho gem.
The Nerazzurri had to start from the Third Preliminary Round of the Europa League because they finished sixth in Serie A last season. The first leg was in Split with the return at San Siro on August 9.
Douglas Maicon, Julio Cesar and Giampaolo Pazzini were left off the UEFA list, as they are on the market, while Andrea Ranocchia missed out because he is due to testify in the betting scandal tomorrow morning.
Hajduk were without Tino-Sven Susic and relied on captain Ante Vukusic in attack. Inter lined up in their new all-red away strip and a Christmas Tree formation led by Diego Milito, while President Massimo Moratti was also in the stands at the Poljud Stadium.
Filip Ozobic put a dangerous ball across the face of goal with nobody able to turn it in, while Wesley Sneijder’s shot was charged down on the counter.
Inter took the lead with another counter-attack, this time successful. Milito did the leg-work, hooking down a long pass and holding it up for Sneijder, but the Dutchman took an eternity to finish it off, waiting to shrug off a couple of diving tackles and draw out the goalkeeper before eventually blasting under the bar from 12 yards.
Palacio came close to a second, but was flagged offside when going one-on-one. Jonathan had a promising run down the right and his cross-shot took a strange bounce off the turf, almost taking Goran Blazevic by surprise at the near post.
Ozobic and Goran Jozinovic had efforts blocked on the edge of the Inter box and Vukusic nodded over the bar.
The Nerazzurri went 2-0 up just before the break thanks to a truly bizarre goal. A Yuto Nagatomo angled drive took a deflection off Mario Maloca shin and left Blazevic stranded. The ball rebounded over his body as he was going down to cover the far bottom corner.
There are some injury concerns, as Cristian Chivu and Fredy Guarin needed treatment for knocks. The Colombian was able to continue, but Chivu went off with sprained toes to make way for Walter Samuel. Hajduk introduced forward Anton Maglica and defender Antonio Milic.
Esteban Cambiasso risked scoring a third within minutes of the restart, turning his glancing free header wide from six yards on a Jonathan chipped cross.
Jonathan again set up a great chance, Milito’s backheel flick a little too audacious. Vukusic unleashed a screamer from distance that was deflected just over the bar.
Sneijder made way for Coutinho, who had been expected to start the match. The Hajduk goalkeeper had to acrobatically palm a deflected cross out from under the woodwork.
It was 3-0 when substitute Coutinho made his mark with a splendid goal. The young Brazilian waltzed into the box after a give-and-go with Palacio, then picked his spot to curl a snooker shot round the goalkeeper and into the far bottom corner.
As a nice touch, Stramaccioni introduced former Hajduk Split youth team player Marko Livaja as his last substitute in place of Milito. He was not given a warm welcome by the home crowd, though.
Hajduk had a wonderful opportunity to get one back after Maglica sprung the offside trap, but he clumsily tried to lob Samir Handanovic and Nagatomo got back in time for a goalline clearance.
Moments later a howler from Matias Silvestre at the by-line allowed Maglica to go clear on goal, but Handanovic was alert to rush out and spread his body to charge it down from six yards.
Jonathan forced a save out of Blazevic in the final minutes with a powerful angled drive and Guarin's free kick from 25 metres was well over.
Andrea Stramaccioni praised Inter for playing “an almost perfect game” in their Europa League qualifier against Hajduk Split.
The Third Preliminary Round is practically in their pockets after the 3-0 away win, which saw the Hajduk supporters cheering and applauding long after the final whistle.
“We were concentrated and prepared this match in every detail,” the Coach told La7 television.
“It’s spectacular atmosphere even when they lost 3-0, so imagine what would’ve happened if we had gone behind. The Hajduk fans deserve praise, as they are showing the best side of football.”
Wesley Sneijder, Yuto Nagatomo and Philippe Coutinho got the goals in Croatia, while the second leg is on August 9.
“I think Inter played an almost perfect game today. We are working with our heads down and the thing I liked most is that Inter always tried to play the ball.
“It’s just a shame for that late Matias Silvestre error, as otherwise Samir Handanovic would’ve had nothing to do at all.
“We are working well, very united as professionals and men. The President gave us a surprise by coming here today, he made us very happy.
“Our plans were very clear – it would’ve been a mistake to try to be ready for August 2. We are preparing for the season ahead of us.”
Wasn't much impressed to be honest. We literally scored every chance we got and conceded a little too much IMO to such inferior opposition. Guarin was indeed a beast and Coutinho is a miniature genius. We need to get in better shape though and we need to bench Cambiasso...
Javier Zanetti is approaching a record 800th game for Inter, prompting Dave Taylor to remark on his continued influence in Serie A.
A new era dawns for Inter as Coach Andrea Stramaccioni rejuvenates the squad and attempts to construct a spirited team in his own style - spirited, determined and youthful.
Yet, amid the carnival of gilded youth that is the modern game, it is sometimes easy to forget that experience also counts for something, regarding footballing endeavour. In the Nerazzurri’s case no-one is more qualified than Javier Zanetti, whose 798 competitive games played for the club, before his 39th birthday next week, renders him unique in Serie A.
Stramaccioni’s squad going into 2012-13 has emerged from a summer that has witnessed several veteran protagonists depart. It is now an intriguing and exciting blend of new signings, loanees and primavera graduates. If you like, a sort of footballing version of the traditional wedding custom, ‘Something old, something new. Something borrowed, something blue.’
The old is ably represented almost singularly now by Zanetti, who is nearly three older than his Coach. However, if he plays anything like he did last night in the 3-0 Europa League defeat of Hajduk Split, then he can still contribute buckets to his beloved Beneamata.
“In spite of my age, I feel I’m in good shape and want to do my bit for the team,” he insisted this week. “I’ll be the first to step down if I realise I can’t keep up the pace. There’s talk of a young team and I agree completely. Those of us who have more experience will be able to give the younger players a hand to improve.”
It is apparent that he is not the long-term solution in the new-style 4-2-3-1 formation, but his versatility on both flanks as a defender or a midfielder and his propensity in central midfield will provide more time to prepare the team for when he inevitably hang up his boots. Before then his standing in the dressing room also means he can be Strama’s conduit to the players on and off the pitch.
Pupi also wants to make up for the Nerazzurri’s disappointing sixth place last season and believes the new squad is good enough to challenge for the Scudetto. “We want to start off again as soon as possible and have a great season. We’ll be a team with clear ideas and it is our firm intention to contend for the title,” he added.
El Tractor is out of contract next June, two months short of his 40th birthday, yet his predecessor Beppe Bergomi, still thinks his engine can keep ticking over. “Once I joked about him playing until he was 50,” remarked the legendary defender. “Now I seriously believe that he can play until he's 45. His fitness is intact and like Paolo Maldini, he will decide when and why to quit football. He is a superman.”
Well, although not quite Clark Kent, he does have his secret, and it is dedication. “I don't mess around when it comes to fitness care,” he says. “Also, the harmony I find at home with my beautiful family helps me concentrate solely about football. My secret is to train as intensively as I can, if possible, with the same level of intensity you experience in a real match and as long as my body responds, I will keep on playing.”
And although Javier may no longer be youthful he is still certainly determined and spirited. Former Inter Coach Jose Mourinho put it best when he said: “To me Zanetti represents the joy of living, the joy of making football your job every morning. He is the smile, the life force, the passion for training, the good cheer for everyone who works with him.”
HERE is some highlith frank ,we dominate the game completely and the other team look very ordinary ,about cambiassa i agree with lomba he was just embarassing ,dont understand why we are no looking for a good Mid F.Guarin is super but need someone good on is side ,and yes Cou is a little genius and i like Palacio
