Well, in fairness, I would kinda agree with your mate there. By Italian standards (Inter set the benchmark), we're not the kind of club to radically change managers. We had long-term managers most recently in Spalletti and Capello, both of whom left by their own accord. The 04/05 four managerial madness mayhem was really just a freak. Prandelli was sounded out as the right man for the job and the long term boss before he had to leave so suddenly, and then we struggled to quickly find an adequate replacement. Voller or Delneri (Conti) were really just short-term – stopgap – solutions, as was Ranieri, really, brought in to steady the ship. In the 80's we were perhaps a bit more capricious, but they were different times.

Blogistuta posted something saying that Baldini is the key to the "project" not Lucho. He also says "in the sense that while a good person, un hombre vertical and potentially a very good coach, he brings nothing exclusive to him which is otherwise unattainable."

Yeah, I read that and to a point I agree. I mean, I would agree totally were it not for one caveat.

Baldini is the main man in my eyes, and as I've said before I think I'd follow him off a cliff. But I'm worried that there aren't too many coaches out there that can offer his project the break from the past that it needs.

LE's attitude seems to stink, but maybe there's something we don't know right now that will change my opinion on that. I've had this feeling for a while that he was holding something back. I mean, it's so hard to believe that a guy who had the stomach fora swap between Real and Barca would be so easily intimidated. Dunno, could just be a feeling an nothing more.

I won't lose any sleep about his departure, I just hope that the idiots don't win and that desire for change isn't abandoned. I hope that the next appointment is backed in the same way that he was and obviously, I hope that appointment has the balls to stick up for himself and ignore the pressure.

As an aside, I'd forgotten about that remark from Rosella re: Spalletti abandoning ship. I do not miss her at all.

Finally have a few minutes to gather my thoughts on LE (won't take long, heh heh heh. Joking). Well. What to say. First off, I suppose, is perhaps the most basic of thoughts when in these kind of situations: I'm actually not sad at all to see him go. Nope. Usually when a manager leaves there is a sadness there. Spalletti was a sadness solved only by heavy drinking. Even Ranieri was a sadness, stopgap tinkerman lunatic mad thing that he is. With LE, there is no sadness. I have to admit I'm looking forward to a new Roma under a new manager, whoever it may be.

But that is not to say that there is no regret or no appreciation for LE. I appreciate what he tried to do. I appreciate his footballing philosophy, I appreciate his focus on youth and his willingness to throw a youngster into the mix, and I fully believe what I said a few months back when I first started to seriously doubt him – that one day he will go on to be a top-class football manager. But just not with us, and just not now. From the very start he was clear on what he wanted and worked meticulously toward that goal which, at the beginning, was commendable. We seen glimpses of how his style of football – the Barca style, if ya like – could work, and thought given time this 'project' could really be something special. I think that is were a lot of the love came for the man. He tried to implement something that was foreign to calcio, a different mentality and a different approach to the game, possesso paella and beautiful passing and attacking football, and there was a feeling that this could be something very special. But in the end it was too much, too fast – as I have often said – and it just didn't work. With time, maybe, but he gave up on it first.

He showed a strong commitment, a stubbornness, even, for his footballing beliefs and rigidly stuck to them, and I think it was perhaps that unwillingness to change which first led to the doubters starting to creep in and cracks to appear. He never considered fluctuating from his formation, even slightly, to try to improve things, and he never acted to try sort out the complete shambles that our defence was and is, which, for me, was appalling. I joked earlier in the season that I don't think LE works on the defence at all in training, but later on – in fact, when Napoli were completely schooling us in the first 20 minutes of the second-half at the Olimpico – I actually seriously started to believe it. I ran out of other possible solutions. Our set-pieces were so poor we looked like a pub team who had never played together; there was little defensive cohesion between with the midfielders and the forwards; we were repeatedly so easy for the small teams to play against – simply defend like trojans and counter-attack like the Fifth Legion (as Cosmi played to perfection). It was beyond ridiculous. And this from man who likes his defending perhaps more than others, and so I started to lose faith in the system.

It was also disappointing for me to see him say in such a carefree manner that he will walk away as soon as he's not wanted. I'd like a manager to have a bit more balls, and for him to come out and lose the fucking rag a little in all these conferenza stampa's in which he was being hounded by the journalists and he'd look back at them as if they were like cavemen who just picked up a pen for the first time, and instead of just giving them the silent treatment to a dumb question (which was fuckin hilarious all the same), I'd wish he'd lose the fuckin rag and shout at them "no, this is my Roma, I am the manager I have the backing of the board and the players and I'm here to stay so fuck you arhghghghgh". You know what I mean? Bah, he provided some good times all the same.

I also don't really buy into the idea that there was a certain element of the tifosi who forced him out. Those who booed and whistled and put up banners saying for him to leave. I think thats bollocks. This is football, its a professional sport followed by millions, and that sort of shit will always exist, there will also be those type of fans and always some eijits with some half-arsed opinions. It wouldn't be the same without it. Well, maybe it would.

Its a tough one. I'm not sad to see him go, but I can certainly appreciate the man and the philosophy and what he tried to do and I wish him all the best. Not that he'll need it.
