August 25 start for Serie A

The Corriere dello Sport is today suggesting that next season’s Serie A will begin on the weekend of August 25 and 26.

There were whispers circulating last week that the championship would begin on August 19 or even on Wednesday 22 August.

However, the Rome-based daily is now claiming that the new top-flight campaign will kick-off the week after.

It’s being suggested that the season will have three midweek rounds.

The footballing authorities were considering an earlier start than usual in an effort to give Italian clubs a better chance in European competitions.

Italian sides generally struggle in Europe at the start of the campaign because championships in other countries get a head start.

This season’s Serie A should have begun on August 28, but Week 1 was postponed so the championship didn’t get underway until the second week in September.

Any thoughts on the Tessera del Tifoso being ditched at the end of this season in favour of leaving individual clubs to organise their own schemes?

Good thing as far as I'm concerned, as it may help to raise attendances a bit.

Just hope foreigners will be exempt from having to be a member of a club's scheme, the same way they were exempt from the tessera.

Has it defo been ditched? Its such a messy and backward system I hadn't really been following developments with it (like, for example, is it the case that a home club could decide themselves if the oppositions traveling fans had to have Tessera del Tifoso IDs or not? I read something like that). Very promising news about it anyway, it was certainly a big factor in decreasing attendances across Serie A, so anything that helps in that regard.

I would say foreigners or tourists would be exempt from any club's schemes alright, but again it could be down to the individual club.

Not sure how he can say “This is not good news for the sport". Crowd trouble was quite bad a few years ago and of course needed to be looked at, but the tessera del tifoso system always seemed like the wrong way to go about it.

Week 33 moved to midweek
/ Monday April 16 2012

The Lega Calcio has decided that Week 33’s postponed round of fixtures will now be played on the midweek of April 25. After the entire round’s postponement over the weekend in the wake of Livorno player Piermario Morosini’s death on Saturday afternoon, there was dispute between top-flight clubs over when the games should be played instead.

A majority of clubs were happy to have next weekend’s Week 34 games shifted back a few days into an April 25 midweek round and for Week 33’s matches to then take next Saturday and Sunday’s slot. However, the likes of Inter, Udinese, Chievo, Genoa and Napoli reportedly pushed for Week 34 to stay at the weekend and Week 33 to instead move to the April 25 position.

After holding a meeting between the League’s clubs on Monday evening, a decision has now been reached to leave Week 34’s fixtures scheduled for this coming weekend and then play Week 33’s postponed games the following midweek, on Tuesday April 24 and Wednesday April 25.

Kick-off times for the new midweek round are all mid-to-late afternoon, to appease UEFA regulation that they cannot be played at the same time as Champions League games. The second leg of the semi-final between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will be played that Wednesday evening.

Diamanti is in cracking form (albeit I'm only going from Serie A kicks on ESPN and these ratings posted by Jocksboy). I've always thought he was pretty good, technically very good.
