Moratti: 'No AVB-Inter talks'

Inter President Massimo Moratti has reassured links with sacked Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas “are just rumours, absolutely.”

The Portuguese tactician had already been linked with the club last summer, but the Nerazzurri refused to pay the buy-out clause on his contract from Porto.

Now that AVB is a free agent and Claudio Ranieri is struggling, Moratti was asked whether talks were already in place for next season.

“These are just rumours, absolutely,” the President told journalists outside his Milan office.

“I saw parts of the Catania game. My mood was disastrous during the worst part of the match, when we were losing, then I have to say it was very important to have that fightback and show of character, while there were also improvements in the football.

“This can count for a great deal in certain terms, as it gives us a wake-up call.”

During that 2-2 draw with Catania, Esteban Cambiasso was jeered after his substitution, prompting the midfielder to burst into tears on the bench.

“I don’t think Cambiasso is even remotely offended for himself, he was just sincerely upset at the situation in that moment. Cambiasso has a strong character and doesn’t suffer these things.”

It is now reported Ranieri’s last chance saloon is going to be the second leg of the Champions League tie with Olympique Marseille, where he must overturn a 1-0 defeat.

“Marseille? There’s time. Yes, I have spoken with Ranieri.”

I know that sponsors are permitted in the FFP regulations, but we are speaking here I beleive about shareholders. Are we sure shareholders or even owners can give money injections to the club? I know that for example Man City had to invent a sponsorship (through it's owner's family) of 400M euros to cover the debts accumulated. So that means money injections from it's owner are definately not accepted. Minor shareholders...I dont know, but at this point changing Moratti with say a richer owner wouldn't really make a difference I believe.

Zanetti: Happy birthday Inter!

Javier Zanetti has wished Inter a happy birthday, as the Nerazzurri turn 104 years old today.

Following a break from Milan Cricket and Football Club, FC Internazionale was formed on March 9, 1908, partly because of the wish to create a club more open to foreign players than other Italian sides had been up to then.

Fittingly in celebrating entering their 105th year of existence today, the club received a birthday message from Argentine captain Zanetti.

“Happy birthday greetings to my dearest Inter,” the 38-year-old began in a statement from the team hotel.

“Being part of this beautiful family for so many years is a source of great pride. I can never stop thanking President [Massimo] Moratti for having given me this opportunity.

“And over these many years it has been a great honour to share in the triumphs, but also the difficult times, with many directors, Coaches, teammates, staff members, and all the fans who love this club and who I thank for having always been so supportive.

“We are all special, because we are Interisti. So once again - happy birthday Inter, and may there be another 100 more years like these!”

La Beneamata are in League action tonight, looking to end a winless run of seven Serie A games with a visit to Chievo.

There are reports that Inter President Massimo Moratti had dinner with Andre Villas-Boas in London last weekend. According to Sportmediaset, the patron was seen eating with the sacked Chelsea manager at the Egerton House Hotel in Knightsbridge.

This fuels the already strong reports that Inter have pin-pointed Villas-Boas as the heir to Claudio Ranieri for next season. The Portuguese tactician is already familiar for the Nerazzurri, as he was Jose Mourinho’s assistant manager in 2008-09.

President Moratti is in Verona this evening, as he is in the stands of the Stadio Bentegodi to watch his team play Chievo.

Diego Milito had his penalty saved, but he and Walter Samuel struck in the final minutes to sink Chievo in Inter’s first win since January.

The Nerazzurri ended their run of defeats by fighting back to hold Catania 2-2, but had still managed only two points from the last nine official games. Wesley Sneijder returned to the starting XI with Diego Forlan and Diego Milito, but Esteban Cambiasso was dropped. Andrea Ranocchia, Fredy Guarin and the suspended Luc Castaignos missed out.

Chievo welcomed back Sergio Pellissier from a ban, but were without Gennaro Sardo, Santiago Morero and Nikola Gulan. Inter President Massimo Moratti was in the stands.

The Nerazzurri were awarded a penalty after 13 minutes when Acerbi fell for a Lucio flick and handled in the box. Milito stepped up only to fire his central spot-kick straight at Stefano Sorrentino, who stuck up a hand to parry. The Chievo goalkeeper continued his excellent record at saving penalties, parrying three this season alone.

Sneijder was very unlucky not to open the scoring, as his looping right-foot curler from the edge of the box beat Sorrentino only to crack against the top of the crossbar.

Javier Zanetti only scuffed his finish under pressure from two Chievo defenders, while a Dejan Stankovic shot on the volley was just over the bar.

A Luciano cross-shot landed on the roof of the net with Julio Cesar scrambling across and Andrea Poli’s wayward clearance threatened an own goal. An acrobatic Stankovic scissor-kick volley was charged down in the box.

It was almost 1-0 to Chievo before the break, as Pellissier surged forward on the counter to hold off Lucio and his shot from a tight angle was beaten away by Julio Cesar’s trailing leg with nobody ready to tap the loose ball into an empty net.

At the other end, Forlan’s flick whistled just wide and a Sneijder attempt was too weak to trouble Sorrentino.

After the restart, Sneijder’s chipped pass across the face of goal went past everyone, including the head of Douglas Maicon and outstretched Poli foot.

Maicon burst past Michael Bradley, but Acerbi performed a decisive and clean tackle to stop him short in the area. Chievo moved to a five-man defence and made it very difficult for Inter to create chances in the second half.

Stankovic had another shot charged down and Giampaolo Pazzini replaced Forlan, but it was Chievo who threatened with Bradley’s free kick just over the bar.

Esteban Cambiasso came off the bench and should’ve scored with practically his first touch, as Sneijder’s free kick was palmed into his path, but he blasted over the bar.

Inter kept pushing and at the 87th minute a corner found Walter Samuel’s towering header across the face of goal to open the scoring. The Argentine defender got away from marker and former Inter player Marco Andreolli.

The Nerazzurri secured their first victory since January with Milito also escaping the defence to nod in Javier Zanetti’s cross from six yards. The cameras trained on Coach Ranieri, who seemed misty-eyed at this late fightback.

The best game I've seen us play in ages. Dominated the game for all the 90 mins, even though we played a diamond midfield formation which I thought this team couldn't handle anymore. Even if we hadn't won this, I would have been more than happy with what I've seen.
Marseille seem to have lost their 4th match on the trot...maybe something could happen next tuesday after all...
