I agree with you, Ed. But mainly because I don't think he'd be a success. I'd want him to be, of course, but going back now, past his prime, risks damaging his reputation as a player, and opens up the possibility of me having to listen to a summer full of lazy british journalists complaining that Italy play too many old men, while at the same time lauding the "commitment" of Lampard and Terry. Whenever I think of comebacks, I think of Michael Schumacher and Lance Armstrong. Romantic endings are so rare, and even those two – who are among the greatest in the history of their sports, even if Lance is a doping bastard - found it too hard to turn back time.

All the grace, determination and skill in the world can't hold back the ageing process forever.

Also: Italy play Ireland. The fewer options they have up front, the better.

It's all garbage. I don't think Totti would fit the style of play the Prandelli is looking for and Totti would only go if he was going to get serious minutes.

Add to it the fact that both men essentially just didn't rule it out. Neither seemed to endorse the idea.

Enrique: 'Roma not inferior to Juve'


Luis Enrique insists the 3-0 scoreline did not reflect the real game. “I did not see Roma in any way inferior to Juventus.” The Giallorossi were swept aside in tonight’s Coppa Italia quarter-final in Turin and saw Erik Lamela sent off for an off the ball incident with Giorgio Chiellini.

“We made a few mistakes on the first goal, then on the second Alessandro The Waterboy came up with a wonderful finish,” said the Spaniard. “The result is bad for us, but we must continue to work, because we are on the right track. I did not see Roma in any way inferior to Juventus, but the details make the difference. We made life difficult for ourselves by being caught out on through balls in the first two goals.”

Very disappointing result today, though I can't say that it was unexpected. Juventus are on a good run, and playing them away was always going to be difficult. Still, it's the Coppa, so not a big loss. Some quick notes:

- Pjanic was very disappointing today. I understand that Juve were crowding the midfield, but I felt that Pjanic didn't step up. I don't know if he was simply "marked out" of the game, but it didn't seem like he was looking to get on the ball when we needed him to. He's the most creative of the midfield three, and somehow it seemed like it always Simplicio that was looking to make something happen.

- I don't know why Rosi didn't start today. Taddei really seemed to struggle at times on the right. I also don't know what to make of Jose Angel at this point. He seems promising, but at the same time just not there yet.

- I don't think Kjaer will ever come around.

- I think we really saw the importance of being able to take on opposing players and running at them when teams crowd the midfield like Juve did today. It really helps to create the space needed to break those teams down. Lamela can do it, so can Bojan, and Borini, but no one else in the midfield seemed willing or able to do so. I think that's why we didn't get a single goal today, and it's why we lost.

I have to say I'm a bit bemused by all the sudden skepticism over Kjaer. I like the kid, I think he's honest and all heart and I would take up our option to buy him in the summer. Having said that, I've had different expectations of him from the start. I think a lot of people were so happy we finally nabbed him come the end of the mercato last summer that they thought, "right, thats our defence sorted – he'll be the solution to all our problems at the back, he'll be our new Philippe – now how many more forwards can we buy?" All you have to do was look at his time at Palermo. He was younger, yes, but he still made massive brain-farts and was over-eager and often made the wrong decision, all things which a young defender can do, while still showing enough class to make people take notice. He could make some monster tackles and get stuck the fuck in but then he could trip over his own shadow and concede a goal. I didn't follow him much at Wolfsburg but I believe it was pretty much the same story. He's still very young and inexperienced and he is still growing and learning, but thats the point of buying young players, so they will have time to do that. He needs a wise head beside him – Juan, for example (i.e., not Heinze) – and I still think we'll need to buy another centre-half in the summer – and I think he can be a fine player for us.

CORSPORT (R. MAIDA) - Stavolta non ha usato la suola della scarpa per un gioco di prestigio ma per uno scatto di frustrazione: un colpo a Chiellini nelle parti intime gli è costato l'espulsione. All'interno della brutta serata della Roma, nascosto nella matrioska della partita, Erik Lamela è riuscito a mettersi in evidenza solo in negativo: già non aveva incantato i tifosi dello Juventus Stadium; poi, nel secondo tempo e sul 2-0 per la Juve, ha pensato di chiudere i conti in anticipo lasciando i compagni in inferiorità numerica.

IL FATTO - L'irregolarità non è stata notata dall'arbitro Banti che anzi ha spiegato ai giocatori della Roma di aver visto una «manata». E' stato il secondo assistente, Maggiani, a segnalare il gesto violento. [...] Chiellini e Lamela si sono spinti, colpiti, strattonati. Alla fine Lamela si è lasciato tradire dal nervosismo. Cartellino rosso, il primo in Italia, ma pesante perché ha tolto alla Roma le ultime speranze di restare aggrappata alla Coppa Italia.

SPIEGAZIONI - «Chiellini mi ha provocato» ha raccontato Lamela ai compagni negli spogliatoi, ammettendo di aver colpito l'avversario. Nessuno lo ha condannato, logicamente, ma i dirigenti non sono contenti. E gli spiegheranno che certe cose devono essere evitate nell'interesse della squadra, ancora prima che per l'immagine della società. «Non ho visto cosa sia successo - ha spiegato Franco Baldini in zona mista - dovremo sicuramente parlare ad Erik perché certe reazioni non aiutano. E non c'entra il codice etico che abbiamo all'interno di Trigoria». Lamela potrebbe anche essere multato.

IL TECNICO - Più indulgente è sembrato Luis Enrique. «Non so cosa sia successo realmente - ha detto - dalla panchina è difficile valutare queste cose. E non ho incontrato Erik che era impegnato all'antidoping. Se ha dato un calcio a Chiellini non ha fatto un bel gesto, ma il calcio è anche uno sport di contatto. Possono capitare certi momenti». Forse a 19 anni succedono un po' più spesso: «Non credo sia un problema di età. Vengono espulsi calciatori giovani e calciatori meno giovani».

LA SQUALIFICA - E ora che succede? Niente, nell'immediato. Lamela potrà giocare domenica contro il Bologna. Il campionato non c'entra, a meno di fatti gravissimi che vengono puniti con squalifiche a tempo. Qui si tratta di un peccato non gravissimo. Il giocatore verrà sospeso per la Coppa Italia, quindi sconterà la pena nella prossima stagione, per almeno tre giornate. Molto dipenderà dal referto di Banti, da eventuali aggravanti.
