Inter scraped a 1-0 victory in Cesena thanks to Andrea Ranocchia’s header and the saves of Julio Cesar.
The Nerazzurri had rediscovered their form with two consecutive Serie A wins, but hadn’t won three on the bounce for seven months. Cesena had a disastrous start to the season, but Coach Daniele Arrigoni was turning it around with four wins from the last three rounds, including a shock victory to end Palermo’s 100 per cent home record.
Wesley Sneijder, Cristian Chivu, Jonathan and Emiliano Viviano were still out, while the home side missed Jorge Martinez, Giuseppe Colucci, Raphael Martinho and the suspended Marco Rossi.
Esteban Cambiasso’s cross-shot was palmed out for a corner, but Yuto Nagatomo faced his former club and hit a splendid volley just over the bar.
Surprisingly, Cesena created more opportunities in the first half with a series of crosses, although Lucio and Andrea Ranocchia were equal to them. Philippe Coutinho curled a free kick over the bar, but Julio Cesar had to get down to beat away a powerful Antonio Candreva daisy-cutter.
Thiago Motta’s free kick went into the wall, but Adrian Mutu had penalty appeals on the stroke of half-time when he tumbled under pressure from Lucio. The referee waved play on and the replays suggest it was absolutely the right decision.
Joel Obi replaced Coutinho at the break, but Roberto Guana and Eder had two shots charged down in quick succession, as Inter were caught out on the counter. Marco Parolo also stung Julio Cesar’s fingertips with his left-foot strike from distance.
Inter did take the lead with their first real chance on 63 minutes. A free kick was whipped towards the near post by Douglas Maicon for Andrea Ranocchia’s glancing header, as Francesco Antonioli mistimed his intervention.
Ranocchia was decisive at the other end too, charging down Mutu’s attempt, while a Candreva angled drive was deflected wide. Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri gave Diego Forlan is comeback after a long injury lay-off.
Cesena continued to attack as Inter tried to slow down the tempo. With five minutes to go, a Candreva free kick was knocked down by Lauro for Abdel Ghezzal’s stunning volley, but Julio Cesar somehow readjusted to parry with an outstretched leg from close range.
We been after vargas for ages and we let him go i dont hope for anything for the next 10 years only hope is if moratti live and the silly son take over
So best case scenario is that Moratti leaves and his son starts the massive spending on overrated players again? I think you were being generous Briz. Give us at least 15 years for something special to happen.
Source: http://www.football-italia.net/node/13987 --------------------------------------------------------------- For the last match of the year against Lecce, it probably isn't worth risking Sneijder and prolonging his injury.
Messina is not about spending ,is about buy the right players vargas is another sanchez we may buy him in 2 o 3 years for 50 millions look at the mediocre shit we buy this year ,vargas was one that we should had.
Vargas is a great player. any team would benefit from having him in their squad.
The problem with Moratti is that he gets too involved in transfers and the business of coaches, scouts and sporting directors. When Mourinho was in charge, Moratti took a step back and let Mourinho and others have a bit more control in the decision making process. In fact, Mourinho may have demanded it, he seems a bold enough character to do so.
Briz, Napoli bought Vargas for 17M dollars. I doubt Inter has that much to spend on just one player who has only played 1 decent year. You're correct that he might be a new Sanchez, but would we risk that amount of money when we barely have any? J_I, Moratti has always been the one who gave the last word when it came to buying. Nothing has changed from that even when Mourinho was in charge.
Inter 4 - 1 Lecce Muriel 20 (L), Pazzini 34 (I), Milito 49 (I), Cambiasso 73 (I), Alvarez 81 (I) Stadio Giuseppe Meazza
Inter fought back from a shock early Lecce goal to get their fourth consecutive victory, although they hit the woodwork four times, and go up to fifth place.
Inter had Diego Forlan back in the starting XI with Giampaolo Pazzini after his long-term muscular injury, though Wesley Sneijder Cristian Chivu, Jonathan and Emiliano Viviano were still out of action. Lecce picked up their first point under Serse Cosmi with an epic 3-3 draw at Parma on Sunday, but had Moris Carrozzieri suspended, while Edward Ofere, Manuel Giandonato, Andrea Bertolacci, Djamel Mesbah and Andrea Esposito were injured. More importantly, both first choice goalkeepers Julio Sergio and Francesco Benassi were unavailable, so third-choice Ugo Gabrieli had his first Serie A start.
Thiago Motta’s glancing header from a corner whistled wide, but it was Lecce who incredibly went in front with a Luis Muriel solo effort. He sprung the offside trap, cut back past Lucio and Douglas Maicon to beat Julio Cesar at the near post!
Inter tried to fight back straight away, but debutant Gabrieli did brilliantly to palm a Forlan strike on to the upright.
The Nerazzurri were denied by the woodwork again, as Pazzini’s looping header cracked against the bar from a Maicon cross.
Javier Zanetti’s snapshot whistled over the bar, but they hit the frame of the goal for a third time on 30 minutes with a glancing Walter Samuel header from a free kick thumping the post.
It was an astounding match, as Forlan made it four on the woodwork with his deflected header on to the upright!
It was fifth time lucky, as Pazzini flicked in the corner kick at the near post from Maicon’s cross and dedicated the goal to his son Tommaso, who was born this week.
Pazzini should’ve added another on the stroke of half-time, but horribly missed the target with a header wide from Yuto Nagatomo’s cross.
Claudio Ranieri tinkered with his side during the break, introducing Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso. They proved inspired substitutions, as Milito gave Inter the lead with one of his first touches. Ricky Alvarez deserves much of the credit, as he dispossessed Stefano Ferrario and immediately threaded through the middle for El Principe to sweep past an on-rushing Gabrieli.
Pazzini fired over on the counter, but Lecce threatened to equalise on 63 minutes with a trademark counter-attack sparked by Cuadrado, as Julio Cesar needed a reaction save with his legs to keep out Daniele Corvia from just inside the area.
Alvarez’s left-foot angled drive flashed across the face of goal to scrape the back post, but Lecce were becoming more dangerous on the break. Cuadrado rolled across for Corvia, whose first touch let him down and consequently he ballooned over with only Julio Cesar to beat.
Inter did give themselves more of a cushion, as Nagatomo skipped past Cuadrado at the by-line and rolled it back for Cambiasso to come sliding in from six yards.
Lecce would not give in, though, as David Di Michele tested Julio Cesar’s reflexes. However, the Nerazzurri put the result beyond doubt with Nagatomo’s assist for an Alvarez volley.
Guillermo Giacomazzi was lucky to escape without a red card when he blocked Maicon with an elbow under the chin, but it was the Brazilian who had to be held back from reacting furiously.
Lomba we just got 20 million for go to the next turn in the CL. if we cant afford 17 million what the fuck we care if we win a game or not.about vargas been good 1 season thats good because is going to be dear and dear ,we have planty players that been good over the years ,whats good of that ? they show what they con do and now are over the hills .the young players we buy are just and average bunc,a good one come along we should had it
We indeed probably have a good 20M to spend, but I think we need to buy more than just one player. We need to get a winger and a midfielder and if we can also a defender. If we spend too much on one player, we’d still remain with the same problem in midfield. You are completely right when you say certain players need to be bought when their price is still relatively low, but I don’t think 17M is a good price to pay for a player who has just played 1 good season in South America. He could turn out to be a star..but imagine if he turns out to be a flop.. In brief, spending low for future good players is something I agree with, but spending 17M on an unproven player is a big risk IMO..then I might be wrong, I don’t know..
hey lomba actually i just reid that inter was never after vargas
A message from our leader... ----------------------------------------------- Zanetti: We can win in 2012
In his Christmas message to fans, Inter captain Javier Zanetti has spoken of the hope the team has in winning something in 2012.
The 2011 calendar year saw the Nerazzurri play more games, collect more points and score more goals than anyone else in Serie A yet finish the 2010-11 season behind Milan and find themselves in December only fifth in the table going into 2012.
Despite the disastrous start to the 2011-12 campaign, the team’s four consecutive League wins before the winter break have, as Zanetti intimates, given the players renewed hope going forward.
“This break will give us a chance to unwind, and we'll have a week to relax with our families. Then on January 2 we'll be back with those same objectives we always have in our minds.
“An opinion on the first half of the season? In the League we got off to a difficult start for various reasons and due to many different issues, but we responded by putting our minds to it, picking ourselves up, showing our character and our unity.
“Whenever things have got complicated this group has always been able to produce a positive response and this is extremely important.”
The record appearance holder for the Nerazzurri looked forward to what 2012 has in store.
"In 2012 my third child will be born and I'll be looking forward to that day with great excitement. I hope to play an active role from a sporting point of view as well, as I always have done for Inter, in all the competitions.
“Let's hope we raise another new trophy again at the end of the season. From January we'll be able to count on [Wesley] Sneijder and [Diego] Forlan again - Wesley has been unlucky with injuries and Diego is getting his form back and really wants to show what he can do. Both of them will still need some time, but they'll be back.
“[Claudio] Ranieri is right when he says they are two players who can make a great contribution with all of their qualities. Let's not forget the other players who have been sidelined by injury problems and whose absence really penalised us.
“But we are Inter and we are still in the running: along with our fans whose support spurs us on.”
Emiliano Viviano will discuss the possibility of leaving Inter in January in an effort to make Italy’s Euro 2012 squad.
The goalkeeper joined the Nerazzurri from Bologna in the summer, but he damaged knee ligaments in pre-season training and he’s been sidelined ever since.
However, a return to action is close for the Italian international and he’s keen to start playing again.
“We’ll meet with the Inter directors over the first few days of January to discuss a possible loan switch for the boy,” agent Claudio Vigorelli told TMW.
“He is almost ready to start playing again and he’d like the opportunity to win a place in the Italy squad for Euro 2012.”
Palermo have been suggested as a possible destination, but the representative seemed to close that door.
“I don’t think Palermo are an option as they already have two ‘keepers. It’s useless to name clubs, even if I have to admit that he could end up in England.”
Viviano, who stepped in for the injured Gigi Buffon under the guidance of Italy boss Cesare Prandelli, was close to joining Genoa in the summer before he picked up his injury.
Inter’s current first choice custodian is Brazilian international Julio Cesar.
