Lega Serie D – General Discussion

Two Serie D games live on TV this week, both on RaiSport 1. On Thursday at 1.45 p.m. GMT it's Casarano v. Brindisi and on Sunday at 2.30 a chance to see the high-flying Venezia away to ISM Gradisca. (This match will possibly be repeated on Monday for those who'll be watching Serie A. Monday's schedules aren't published yet - I'll post when they are.)

Joy for Messina in yesterday's midweek fixtures. A 2-0 victory lifts them to 16 points and one place above the relegation zone.
A shock 3-0 home defeat for Venezia, only their second defeat of the season. They still have an 11 point lead in the table as nearest rivals Porto Tolle went down to third place Legnano. It's now Venezia 38 pts,. Porto Tolle 27, Legnano 26.
Note of possible interest. Legnano are the only team I've ever seen who play in lilac jerseys (Maglie lila to show off my limited knowledge of Italian!)

A 0-0 draw for Messina meant they drop one place in the table and are back in the play-out zone.
Venezia also had to be content with a draw, 1-1, against bottom side Itala San Marco Gradisca. Their lead at the top has been cut to 9 points as Porto Tolle won, as did third place Legnano.

A massive 4-0 vistory for Messina yesterday. That lifts them up to 12th place+.
Venezia also won, 4-2, and stay nine points clear at the top.

Draws for both Messina and Venezia in the first games after the winter break. Messina 0-0 and that puts them back to 13th place and in the relegation playout zone, two points behind twelfth place.
Venezia's 2-2 with Porto Tolle winning leaves the Arancioneroverde only 7 points ahead at the top.

Today's Serie D game on Rai Sport 1 is Salerno v. Marino. Transmission starts at 12.55 p.m. GMT.

A good 4-1 win for Messina sees them rise to tenth in the table with 24 points. Oh, that seven point deduction. But for that they would have been tied for second place just four points behind the leaders.
Venezia's slump continues. A 1-1 draw again, coupled with wins for Porto Tolle and Legnano leaves them just six points ahead of Tolle and seven ahead of Legnano.

They learn the hard way as always. Yet, do they ever learn? If they did, they wouldn't be in the Serie D...

Satiurday's live game on Rai Sport 1 is Noto v. Nuovo Cosenza at 1.15 p.m. GMT.

Another defeat for Messina, 0-1 away from home. This means they drop down to 12th spot.
Venezia got back on track with a 4-2 home win. Porto Tolle drew and Legnano lost, so the lead at the top of the table goes to 8 points and 10 points respectively.

It's almost as if, when Messina wins, Venezia lose and vice versa.

2-1 win for Messina yesterday. Now in 11th place on 27 points. The next few games will be vital. The league is so tight that Messina are only 7 points off second place (that damned penalty again!) and 2 points off the playout zone.
Draws for Venezia (1-1) and Porto Tolle keeps the arancioneroverdi eight points clear at the top on 48. Legnano won and join Porto Tolle in joint second place on 40.
Interesting to note. Verona could just possibly have three teams in the pro leagues next season. The city's third largest club, Virtus Vecomp Verona, are in third place in Girone C just two points behind the leaders. I think I'm right in saying that if they do make it to the Lega Pro Verona will be the only city in Italy to have three clubs in the top leagues (Rome came back down to two after Athletico Roma went bust).
