Calciopoli trial details phone calls



The criminal trial looking into the 2006 Calciopoli scandal is hearing a series of phone calls alleged to have taken place in the run-up to a Juve-Inter match.

The latest phone call set to be played in court, relating to the criminal investigation that alleges influence of refereeing selection and officiating standards, is reportedly between former referee designator Paolo Bergamo and former referee Pasquale Rodomonti.

Their conversation is alleged to have taken place on November 28, 2004, just three hours before Inter played host to Juventus, a game Rodomonti was assigned as referee.

It is claimed in court that this phone call was a direct result of an earlier phone conversation between Bergamo and then-FIGC President Franco Carraro.

In that earlier communication, it is alleged that where Carraro expressed that the 15-point gap between the two teams was not important in the Week 29 fixture, that it was important that there were 'no controversies' from the match, in light of Lega Calcio Presidential elections due to take place the following day.

The court is set to hear this week the resulting phone call between Bergamo and the game's referee Rodomonti.

A transcript of that alleged phone call has already been published and in it Bergamo suggests to Rodomonti that: “if in doubt, think of those who are further behind,” in reference to Inter.

Carraro is alleged to have asked Bergamo in previous recorded phone calls to help Lazio avoid being relegated.

Juventus 'not involved in Calciopoli'

Juventus claim the civil trial confirmed the club’s “non-involvement” with the Calciopoli events.

Former director general Luciano Moggi was found guilty of sporting fraud by the Naples Tribunal today, while Juve had their appeal for damages rejected.

“Today’s decision stated Juventus’ non involvement with the matters charged,” read a statement. “The Club was taken to the court of Naples as civilly liable entity by way of objective liability according to Art. 2049 Italian Civil Code.

“The decision emerged from the result of a thorough hearing and from the analysis of all evidences, clashed with the reality of an inaccurate sports law which severely penalized Juventus, the sole club damaged due to the removal of two titles - following the victories achieved on the pitch - with consequent relegation and related extensive losses.

“Juventus will continue their legitimate campaigns in order to restore the equality of treatment.”

Moggi guilty in Calciopoli civil trial

The Naples Tribunal has ruled Luciano Moggi is guilty of sporting fraud and condemned to five years and four months.

This evening the Calciopoli civil trial came to a head with Judge Teresa Casoria giving her verdict.

Moggi had argued he was “not just one devil in a sea of angels,” but rather that other clubs, including Inter, behaved the same way as the former Juventus director general in trying to ‘protect’ themselves with referees.

Although Moggi is condemned with a prison sentence of five years and four months, he will not actually spend any time in a cell due to the Italian laws.

This is also only the first degree of the justice system, so there are many more levels of appeal.

The trial did not only involve Moggi, but also Fiorentina owners Diego and Andrea Della Valle and Lazio President Claudio Lotito, who were all found guilty and condemned to one year and three months.

Former refereeing designators Paolo Bergamo and Pierluigi Pairetto, plus ex-referee Massimo De Santis were found guilty, while Lecce, Bologna, Brescia, Atalanta and the consumers’ society have the right to damages.

Juventus had their request for damages rejected by the Tribunal.



The reasons behind this ruling will be released in 90 days. Moggi’s lawyers have already announced they will appeal.

The trial didn't prove anyone else is innocent either...

Moggi's whole 'all innocent or all guilty' argument was rather flawed from his personal point of view. He didn't seem to put forward a lot of evidence claiming his own innocence, focusing more on the guilt of others. So, even if he proved others were guilty, he was also still going to be found guilty himself.

However, if the evidence put forward is deemed to show the guilt or potential guilt of directors at other clubs, that could be useful to Juventus in their aim to disprove the idea that they had an exclusive relationship with the refs and designators, which was a key factor in their demotion.
