Di Benedetto went to meet the mayor of Roma today, Gianni Alemanno, to discuss the possibilities over building of a new stadio for Roma. Apparently they put a 2014 timeframe in place for it to be finished, which sounds very optimistic to me. Its now that Di Benedetto and his associates were spotted in Tor di Valle (south of the city centre) and were accessing the racecourse there as a potential location. We discussed this location before, it seems ok, if a little too far out from the city, and it would need some new infrastructure and public transport put in place.

Giovanni was asking what Pippo Marra was stilling doing at Roma –  discusses his future and also mentions another name that will drive him mad, Joe Tacopina. Marra submitted his resignation but may yet be back on the board of directors at the behest of UniCredit, although the Americans would object such a move as they want a fresh start from the previous regime.

For our game tomorrow (wish it were on tonight), Curci is ahead of Lobant to start between the sticks, according to . Will be good to see Curci get his chance, lets hope he can make the most of it. Cicinho and Jose Angel are also expected to come in in the 'full-back' roles, with the same midfield of Pjanic, De Rossi and Pizarro. Up top Borriello is expected to get the nod ahead of Osvaldo. Lamela may also make the bench.

I love how Krkic has already been deemed a bench player after two games...It will be interesting to see who develops into a worse transfer between he and Osvaldo. Add the cost of Osvaldo and Krkic, and it's fair to say you have yourself Guiseppe Rossi...poor poor poor decision to go after two pylons when you could have had a talented homegrown forward whom I believe is better equipped to slot into the system that LE employs anyhow...

We need Lamela to get into form...he'll be the spark plug, I think.

I'd keep playing Bojan, he's obviously got lots of talent and he's not going to get used to Serie A by sitting on the bench. Worryingly, Osvaldo is looking a bit of a dud so far but hopefully he'll come good. We need them both to.

I think we'll win 2-1 tonight.

I like to criticise and the rip the piss out of my players as good as the next man, but some of the criticism of Bojan and in particular Osvaldo has been extreme even for my liking. Both will need plenty more time to adapt. Bojan will need time as he's playing in a new environment and has to get used to the Italian game, and Osvaldo will need time as he's playing in unfamiliar role for him. LE's system is one in which all the players have to learn and adapt and get used to, and the forward department have the most difficult job in that regard in understanding whats expected from them. For the record, I maintain that Osvaldo will become a bigger success for us than Bojan, but time will tell.

I wonder how that forward department will operated tonight. Will they just hang about up top and lay siege on their goal? With this line-up the midfielders are gonna have their work cut out for them tonight. Also Perrotta at right-full ahead of BOTH Rosi and Cici. And no Curci in goal, Lobant keeps his place.

ROMANEWS.EU SEGUE LA PARTITA IN TEMPO REALE ROMA-SIENA - Stasera (ore 20.45, Stadio Olimpico) la Roma gioca contro il Siena la quarta giornata del campionato 2011/12 (terza effettiva, visto il rinvio della prima, prevista per il 26 agosto scorso). Entrambe le squadre cercano la prima vittoria della stagione: i giallorossi, dopo il passo falso in casa contro il Cagliari, hanno disputato una buona partita a San Siro, mentre i bianconeri, partiti con uno 0-0 contro il Catania, domenica scorsa sono stati sconfitti dalla Juventus.

Well that was a big disappointment. The performance more so than the result. Siena deserved a point from the game, and I was almost willing them to score at the end, to fuck. They played nice open football, weren't afraid to commit bodies forward, and have a lunatic of a coach who knows his shit. Brienza looked classy, too, and was at the centre of everything they did.

We were far too slow and sluggish in possession and didn't look like we knew what we were doing half the time, and we were flat and too square and playing little short passes which led nowhere and then ended up switching the play to the other wing and trying again. There was no urgency or pace in our game, and we don't have the players to out-pass and out-play an opponent and so what are we to do? At the end, after they equalised, we resorted to long crosses into the box.

In every sense its very much like two different formations, depending on who has the ball. Different formations and different roles for each player to play, except perhaps the midfield two. I wonder if its not too complicated? Like LE is trying to do too much, too fast? Its as if LE is trying to bring American football to the soccar pitch, what with his different formations and tactics depending on offence and defence. For the first time I think I'm beginning to seriously doubt if it'll work at all. But I suppose, it needs more time. Time, time, time, verything needs more time… etc. etc.

Perché preferisce come esterni d'attacco Osvaldo e Borriello invece di Bojan e Borini?
Ho 4-5 giocatori per questi due ruoli, che non sono proprio esterni, sono 2 punte e un trequartista. Il mio obiettivo è dover fare più gol possibili, questo è il modo e resto convinto che quando i ragazzi si sbloccheranno dimostreranno che questo sistema va bene. So bene che se non si vince ogni scelta è criticabile. Osvaldo e Borriello hanno giocato bene, potrei schierare anche Borini e Bojan, sono ragazzi di cui sono contento.

Yes, it's absolutely nothing like the Barca 4-3-3; call it 3-4-1-2, if you prefer, or 4-3-1-2, and you might get a clearer picture of how it works (or doesn't). The part from LE's comments I quoted makes this point very explicitly: he says the Osvaldo/Borriello players aren't esterni; rather, we play with two strikers and a trequartista (Totti). So Osvaldo and Borriello aren't being played out of position, if you will, whereas Menez in that role, in theory, would be.

Interesting comments from LE about the two forwards not being wing-forwards (eastern, is it?). It looks like he still expects them to track back the side that they are playing on and defend as a wing-forward would (he did say we defend as 11 and attack as 11), though, so I'm not so sure if they are playing natural striker positions. A striker would work hard and track back too, of course, but not really out so wide. Its also interesting how our primary attacking target in the summer was Nilmar, a player who's most natural position in as a wing-forward, or a winger, even.

And what do we think of Totti as trequartista? He had a good game last night and showed good hunger and worked hard, evening tracking back right to our own end line to chase his man at one stage, but can he play trequartista? More to the point, can he play trequartista in this unorthodox system? He has played some of his best football in that position in the past, no doubt, but now i wonder if he's not more effective closer to the goal. He'd be the last player I'd drop from seeing all of our forwards so far this season, but it'll be interesting to see what happens when Lamela finally gets fully fit and gets his groove on.
