Italy minister asks for league suspension for 'weeks'

MILAN, Nov 12 ( Reuters) - Italian Sports Minister Giovanna Melandri has called on the soccer authorities to suspend league programmes for 'the next few weeks' after rioting on Sunday followed the shooting dead of a Lazio fan by a police officer.

"I have asked the soccer authorities if there is the possibility of a strong gesture, in particular the suspension of the championships for the next few weeks," she told reporters on Monday.

The soccer federation is set to announce a decision after a meeting later on Monday.

Here is what the bitch said today. More symbolsim which means nothing and does nothing to confront the root of the problem. Now remember that last year, in the wake of the violence at Catania, she stated that calcio is too popular and too deeply engrained in the culture when other sports like gymnastics gets no respect.

A show of solidarity?! Solidarity?! Hah.. give me a fucking break... all these pathetic ultra groups want is an excuse for violence. How mnay stabbings and injuries alone have come from the Roman ultras getting into scraps with one another. And here they are, using any random incident to blow it out of proportion and surprise surprise, result in more fucking violence.

These boneheads are an embarressment to every club they represent.

And i know i run the risk of sounding like a selfish prick, but i ask the question again, why the fuck does the entire country mourn the loss of 1 life?? It was not football related, and as someone said, what we have to suspend events everytime a supporter of a team dies?? The decision to go ahead with the matches was spot on, but not the one of delying kickoff or the black armbands. That was absurd. By all means cancel the Inter Lazio game, as the Lazio staff might have been affected by the shock loss of a prominent supporter.

And again, as rash as the law enforcement measures seem, i cannot put a but of blame on them. What the fuck are they suposed to do?? Mistakes happen, especially when idiots like those at the gas station get into frequent brawls. I just read that a bunch of Modena ultras, or something, trashed a similar autogrill the week before that near Abruzzo. And then the world questions why the need to even raise the gun was needed. It was needed because these overgrown children cant seem to be controlled any other way.

Give the law enforcement agencoies a fucking break, how many times do they have to deal with this shit... obviously mistakes happen, and a very costly one at that. This reminds of Pakistan, ignorant public opinion, who will take any reason to jump on those who enforce the law. Pathetic and just plain sad.

Again, it is a tragedy that is no doubt, who's to blame for the young mans death? The man himself, and the fucking hooligans he surrounded himself with.

Peaceful protests, candleight marches.. all of this is fine and commendable... fucking turning the eternal city into a virtual warzone.. it sickens me to my very stomach.

I agree with all of you (and I think everyone with the right mind would) that this has NOTHING to do with this sport and all this is being blamed on football is to hide the truth which is the cultural problem in Italy. The good news today is that Figc president Abete has unequivocally stated the the games will begin as scheduled after the international break.


"We were clear yesterday. We decided unanimously to stop the leagues scheduled to play this weekend and call a federation meeting for Thursday to hear the (club presidents) and evaluate the measures," Abete was quoted as saying by the ANSA news agency.

"As far as we're concerned, games will be played regularly Nov. 25,"


Any comments about Platini's suggestion that 'all fans be required to bring a child with them once the games begin." Is it me or does he not have much of a brain. As a Father with 3 kids, there is no way I would even consider bringing my child to the game. Even a Roma match at the Olimpico. In addition, what are people without children supposed to do. Borrow somebody's child for a few hours. Maybe parents can rent out their child for a fee. Honest to God.
