It's pretty funny scanning the headlines about Roma and seeing how many of them have Totti's name in them. It's not like anything worth talking about happened this week is it?

I don't think Sabatini helped things by speaking out in the press. I think these things should be kept within the team. Then again, maybe he was asked specifically about Totti by the media? That wouldn't surprise me.

I wish the season would start so there would be something new. Of course, if Totti doesn't start, the stories will start up again. Sigh.

Ed, you're right! They'll all look amazing (not in a gay way ... really). I remember the first game last season against Cesena, and the lads on the pitch were all like pigs. And they were the fit ones! The lads "warming up" couldn't even touch their toes, and the "sprints" were more like really short jogs. I haven't seen a Roma team look this well-conditioned for the start of the season for some time. Exciting stuff (but not in a sexual way ... really).

Ha Colly is a homo. Sooooooooonny! Yeh they do look fit. I think Totti's done a lot of personal training, which is good to see, but LE is also a fitness freak so he'll have them all in good shape (all 134 current Roma squad players).

Yeh, Lupa, there's not much else for the Roma media to be reporting. I wish the feckin season would start too, this bleedin wait is a melter.

Daniele De Rossi has warned Roma he won’t sign an unacceptable contract renewal.The ‘future captain’ will be a free agent in June 2012 and the Giallorossi risk losing one of their top stars for nothing.

“My contract will be discussed along with the club,” said De Rossi after Italy’s win over the Faroe Islands last night.“We’re battling over it and negotiating. Obviously I would like to earn a little more, while the club wants to spend less. It’s only normal and happens at every club.Am I ready to sign a blank contract to stay at Roma? No.”

Director of sport Walter Sabatini also commented on the situation, especially amid interest from Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City.

“Daniele’s contract does worry me, though I think it can be resolved, as he strongly wants to stay here. It’s only right he looks at the market rate and makes his requests.We are discussing it in a very constructive way. The club has thought of a fairly innovative type of contract. It would be a huge loss if he did leave, and Roma must be ready to accept that, but I don’t think it will come to that.Many emissaries came to Rome, but the big money offer the media talked about never actually materialised. De Rossi has never been for sale.”

Meanwhile, De Rossi commented on the huge row that has broken out within the club around Francesco Totti, Coach Luis Enrique and director Franco Baldini.

“There are certain factions, some for Totti, some for Luis Enrique or the club. The fans ought to be united in supporting Roma. Francesco is relaxed and is not creating any kind of problem. Taking a substitution badly can happen to anyone.”

Just sign up De Rossi, many would point out that you don't deserve "a little more."

I wish we could get the Totti situation sorted out (even if it has been blown a little out of proportion), and DDR's contract (though I don't see that being resolved anytime soon), so we can concentrate on the important season ahead. We can't afford another slow start.

L’ex bomber giallorosso Ruggiero Rizzitelli ha detto la sua sulla polemica mediatica tra Totti e Luis Enrique. Queste le sue parole a Sky Sport 24: "Ma Totti cosa ha detto in tuto questo? La polemica da dove è nata? E perché? Ecco, io mi chiedo tutto questo. Totti ha abbandonato il campo quando è stato sostituito, è vero, ma stava giocando bene. E’ il Capitano ed è normale che non volesse uscire. Poi, però, Francesco non ha fatto nessuna dichiarazione contro l'allenatore o la proprietà. Quanto può dare ancora Totti alla Roma? Tantissimo. Si è sempre messo in discussione e quando vanno male le cose lo si tira sempre in ballo. Totti è diverso dagli altri calciatori, così come lo è stato in passato Baggio e così come lo è ancora The Waterboy. Nel bene e nel male si parla sempre dei grandi giocatori. Se poi Francesco sbaglia si deve intervenire, ma per partito preso no. Quando sono stato sostituito da lui 18 anni anni fa, nella sua prima partita in Serie A, già si vedeva che aveva i numeri del campione".

That headline says it all. Totti's character or his quality as a captain are not immediately relevant to this discussion. The new management team has come in and all had a pop at him, one after another. It's quite clearly - to my eye - a deliberate attempt to undercut his status at the club. Should he be bigger than the side, singled out for special treatment? No. But that's not the point. He hasn't asked for special treatment. Rather, the Baldini-Sabatini-Enrique axis has pre-emptively taken a pop at him and I find it inappropriate and disrespectful.

What the professional approach would have been would have been to have treated every player as equal rather than to single Totti out for special treatment. The unprofessionalism here is entirely on the part of the management axis. They may prove to do wonderful things and I may be singing their praises in time to come and I'll certainly criticise Totti if I think he deserves it. Their opening gambit on this score has been mishandled, though, and Totti has done very well not to rise to it.

La società di proprietà nordamericana sta tentando di far fuori Francesco Totti: 35 anni, alla ventesima stagione consecutiva con la stessa maglia (474 presenze e 207 gol: record assoluti), miglior marcatore in attività, quinto marcatore di sempre, campione del mondo nel 2006 a Berlino, 58 presenze e 9 gol in Nazionale, inserito da Pelè nella lista dei più grandi 125 giocatori viventi, Scarpa d'Oro 2007.

Prima Franco Baldini che, non ancora direttore generale del club, in un'intervista a Repubblica dà del “pigro” al Capitano. Poi Luis Enrique si suicida in Europa League, bistrattando Totti e facendosi eliminare dallo Slovan Bratislava, che non è esattamente il Barcellona, con l'Olimpico che subissa di fischi l'ex tecnico del Barcellona B.

Ora sale alla ribalta il signor Walter Sabatini, ex laziale, ottimo operatore di mercato, ma comunicatore con la grazia di un elefante in un negozio di porcellane: "Questa storia sta uccidendo la Roma. Totti deve evitare che si parli di lui come quello che ha mangiato un altro allenatore. Totti deve accettare le scelte del tecnico. Totti non è un intoccabile". Piccolo particolare: Totti non ha mai detto una parola nè contro Enrique nè contro Baldini nè contro chicchessia, vuole semplicemente essere giudicato per ciò che fa in campo.

Per la cronaca, il 10 giugno 2011, cioè meno di tre mesi fa, Sabatini aveva descritto Totti come "la luce del sole sui tetti di Roma al tramonto, un mago, una divinità del calcio".

In sostanza, oggi Totti è troppo ingombrante per la Roma. La sua colpa è che, se il nuovo allenatore lo impiega a capocchia, i tifosi fischiano l'allenatore e non il giocatore. Roba da chiodi. Anzichè considerare il Capitano come un punto di riferimento insostituibile nell'anno della Grande Rivoluzione, i nuovi arrivati fanno a gare per demolirne la figura agli occhi dei sostenitori. I quali hanno già scelto da che parte stare. Risultato: la brillante campagna acquisti societaria passa in second'ordine, a Roma non si parla d'altro che di Totti, anzichè concentrarsi sul campionato e sulla costruzione della squadra, la dirigenza sposta il tiro sul capitano, quasi a volersi precostituire un alibi in caso di fallimento. Ma si può? No che non si può. Totti merita molto più rispetto di quanto non ne abbia ricevuto in questa nuova era romanista. Che comincia male.
