Maro, you're probably right on Charlie Adam and Arteta but their stats indicate to me otherwise with the amount of goals they pour in from bombing forward. Anderson is a terrible regista if he was one. He kind of struck me as more anchor than anything but in Man Ure's set up he's required to play a vice-Scholes and go box to box

Scholes hasn't been a box-to-box player in years. He's basically been a deep-lying playmaker for the last few seasons.

Both Arteta and Adam score most of their goals from penalties/set pieces, so I wouldn't use that as an argument for them being box-to-box players.

Anderson has played as an out-and-out regista in the two games I've seen of ManUre so far this season. With Young, Cleverley, and Nani getting up and down to support Rooney and Wellbeck. The goals of those two, as red says, are almost all from set pieces or from strikes from outside the box. The definition of a box-to-box player, in these sorts of terms, has to be something like a player who's prepared to get wrong-side-of-the-ball. Arteta and Adam will never do that.

Everything red has said here I agree with 100%. Except perhaps the Perrotta comment - I think he has just a little more juice left in the tank.

Yah alright, Charlie Adam and Arteta are registas then; would probably have to throw Fabs in the same bin. Perrotta looks like he still had juice left in the tank in that friendly where we only won by 1 goal, forgot against who but just before the Valencia spanking

Fabregas is tricky - I actually think he does have the mobility to play as a true box-to-box player and that this is, indirectly, one of the reasons Barca have been so keen to sign him. He will make runs from midfield, beyond the strikers, in a way none of the other Spanish midfielders will. You can see this, for instance, in the final - I forget whether I mean in the WC or in the Euros - when he gets played through almost immediately, one-on-one with the keeper. Perhaps it's not even the final. Anyway, when Spain brought him on it brought a new dimension to their game because of the runs he was prepared to make off the ball. One of the reasons Spain were so turgid in the WC was that they had a team stacked with sitting central midfielders. Fabregas is the one who's a little bit different in this regard.

Nice discussion on box-to-boxers. I agree that it is a position born out of the English game, and specifically, the rigid use of a 4-4-2. I also like the term of a 'playmaking anchor' to describe a regista – it fits well and describes it nicely for those (such as most followers of the Premiershit) who've never heard of the word regista.

Anderson could be a great box-to-box midfielder, I think, more so than a regista. At Porto he played as trequartista and was a phenomenon, but since such a position is hard to come by in the Premiershit he's had to adapt, and I don't think he's quite sure of his role in ManPoo's midfield, but he will come good in whatever role he settles too.

Scott Parker is another good example of a box-to-box midfielder. And Jack Wilshere could well be a top-class player in that role, depending on how he develops (or where he is deployed). Also maybe Jack Rodwell.

Marchisio is a good shout for a box-to-box midfielder alright, Red, if he's given a chance in the middle. How about your new boy, Vidal, he's possibly what you could call a box-to-box man? I know he's good defensively but not sure quite how good at the end.

For Roma, Lucho Gonzalez could fit in this role and is the type of all-rounder we (LE) needs.

Ad oggi Bojan e Borriello, anche lui fuori ruolo. Ad innescarli sarà Francesco Totti, riportato, dopo anni, nella veste di trequartista. Appena il capitano sarà in possesso di palla, i due attaccanti avranno il compito di accentrarsi per agevolare l'ultimo passaggio. Il 4-3-3 a cui spesso si fa riferimento, dunque, sarà soltanto il modulo di partenza: si trasforma in 3-4-1-2 in fase d'impostazione e in 4-5-1 quando sono gli avversari in possesso di palla, grazie allo scalare degli esterni, oppure in alternativa in un 4-4-2 con a turno uno degli attaccanti a rimanere in avanti a dare supporto a Totti. Attualmente, alla squadra però manca la spina dorsale: un difensore, due mediani titolari ed una punta. Arriveranno a ridosso della prima giornata di campionato.

Squad list announced for our Europa League first-leg on Thursday. Pizarro (thigh strain, out for 20 days) and Greco (what's his injury?) (along with Juan, who is out indefinitely), while DDR is suspended. Brighi isn't fully fit and is a doubt, while Perrotta (ankle), who was expected to miss out, is included but also remains a big doubt. That leaves Taddei, Simplicio, Viviani and Verre as our midfield options, while Simplicio is just included out of pure necessity, even though he's clearly not part of LE's plans (and also may not play so he won't be cup-tied as he's up for sale). Still, its expected Brighi, Viviani and Simplicio will start (or maybe Taddei?). Totti, Bojan and probably Gayhair upfront, while we're also very limited at the back with Burdisso and Heinze. Talk about a make-shift team. At this stage bringing back Loria is not looking like such a bad idea.

Sini is a left-back. Brosco was sold to Triestina for €500. Our first official game is in two days, and the league starts in 12. Reports of the Kjaer deal are just that, reports. It takes time to integrate a player in the team, and no more so than at centre-back. Heinze is a joke at centre-back – have you seen him play lately? And Senderos? Good God, I think I just soiled myself.

Yeah I just seen that alright on that a deal has reportedly been struck. A loan for €2m and then a further €8m in 2012. Good to hear, at last.
