Yeh i was thinking that alright. But surely the likes of Inter must have loads of non-EU players, say the likes of – Lucio, Eto, Alvarez, Maicon, Mariga, Milito, Coutinho, Nagatomo, Muntari, Kerlon, Rivas – surely all of them don't have EU passports?

Wow, you werent kidding about the amount of Argies on Catania, Shield. Im sure alot of them have dual citizenship somehow like Maxi Lopez and Izco. On Inter, i think players like Lucio and Eto'o have German and Spanish passports respectively. Im not too familiar with the non-EU rules so i did a read on Wiki. i think Shield nailed it when he mentioned that each squad can only sign X non-EU players at a time (ill explain the X). Wiki was very informative about the conditions depending on how many non-EU players a team possesses.

Depending on how many non-EU players your team possesses, you are granted conditions. If you're newly promoted or have 0 non-EUs, you are permitted to sign up to 3. If you have 1 non-EU, you can sign 2. If you have 2 non-EU, you can sign 1 + 1 conditional (must transfer/release 1 player from roster). If you have 3+ non-EU, you are permitted 2 conditional signings but only 1 upon the release of 2 players.

Somehow signing non-EU players domestically is a loophole. They also went on to mention what sneaky bastards Inter are to be using Chievo to 'borrow' quota. They also go on to mention that some quota was reduced back to 1 (as opposed to 3?? not too sure here) last year. There are links in the footnotes if someone can read Italian and relay the legal conditions to us here. The players we have in question are listed below

Juan (unsure if he has German passport)
Pizarro (signed from Inter, unsure if he has Italian passport)
Lamela (takes 1 non-EU for sure but he takes up Riise's conditional slot)
Simplicio (signed from Palermo, unsure if he has Italian passport)

Players not in question but might make you think so
Lobont (Romania qualified in 2007)
Cicinho (he married a Borriello, so he has Italian citizenship)
Heinze (has EU passport, confirmed when he signed for Man Ure)
Taddei (has Italian ancestry + citizenship, threw this in there just in case)
Burdisso (has EU passport according to Wiki, i figured it is Italian)

Final concern is that Vucinic should have freed up a second conditional slot. If so, why do we have to pursue a 3rd conditional by selling Simplicio. Do new targets Nilmar/Osvaldo possess Spanish/Italian citizenship as well??

Not sure if it would be killing any birds. getting rid of Simplicio would essentially lower the amount of non-EUs in our squad but we're still over the count of 2 (pending on someone confirming that Juan/Pizarro/Simplicio have passports. Regardless, we're still entitled to 2 conditional non-domestic non-EUs and we have yet to cover the slot left by Vucinic. Does transferring Vucinic to Juventus mean that they have essentially 'borrowed' from our quota?? Back to Osvaldo, if he has an Italian passport, i dont see how we should be worried about him as a non-EU signing nor should we be concerned with freeing up any more slots in this transfer window, with the exception of cutting down the size of our roster

Or for the Avocado, perhaps. Curci, Cassetti, Antei, Brighi, Perrotta, Okaka, Viviani, Borriello on the bench. I wonder where that team would finish? I present that as an open question, since wage obstacles aside, I suspect that team could have been assembled for not much more (and probably a fair bit less) than the team which Sabreteeny will end up having put together. And if any of those are especially weak links, then you could easily take out one or two and replace them with those we have bought (Cassano for Lamela, if you like, or Angel for Criscito).

Aleandro Rosi non è più sul mercato. Al momento. Le indisponibilità di Juan e Burdisso (quest'ultimo in recupero, ma ancora alle prese con l'ernia inguinale) ed il consequenziale utilizzo di Marco Cassetti al centro della difesa, lo rendono a tutti gli effetti l'unica alternativa a Cicinho lungo l'out destro.

Ieri durante l'esercitazione tattica Luis Enrique ha utilizzato proprio Rosi nella difesa titolare, insieme alla coppia centrale composta da Cassetti-Burdisso, con lo spagnolo Jose Angel a sinistra. Con tutta probabilità, dunque, il ragazzo del lotto 10 della Garbatella stasera avrà la ghiotta opportunità di partire dal primo minuto al 'Mestalla' in occasione dell'amichevole contro il Valencia, e di irrobustire la propria candidatura per il prossimo impegno di Europa League contro lo Slovan Bratislava.

It wasn't intended as my 'dream team', Davit; I should have been quite happy to have seen Doni, Mexes, Menez, and Vucinic in giallorosso again next season. The team was an offering in response to the conversation about whether there was Italian talent out there we ought to have been pursuing. I tend to agree with red - that there is good reason not to be going for Italian players at this particular juncture (Aquilani, Montolivo, and Cassano, for example, are almost certainly beyond the contract constraints the club has set for itself; Rossi probably is too and is massively over-priced at this point, however much we might like him as a player; Criscito's probably not really a left-back in a back four). Aquilani and Montolivo would complement DDR in the same way, yes, though quite how good DDR's season will be depends in no small part on how successful the team's season will be, and that was the question I asked in the first place, I think.

Well, Pastore's not "worth" 42m. I suspect Sanchez might just be worth 35, though in general I'd say he's unlikely to be - he actually doesn't have much proven, sustained achievement on his CV. I just happen to think he might be the real deal, but in general you're going to pay over the odds for a player like Sanchez at this point in his career (coming off the back of only really one special season, for a smallish team). Rossi might be 'worth' about 18?
